Just watched Sugiyama-Jankovic. Jelena got very, very lucky. If Ai didn't make five or six critical errors on easy balls at bad moments, the score might've reversed, easily.
Anyway, Jelena has to do more to beat the big girls. Losing to Bartoli is not out of the question.

Ana can be annoying but this behaviour seems to help her in matches so why not.
Certainly preferable to Venus' loser attitude yesterday, for example.

It didn't help her that much. Thanks Eurosport for not showing the end of the match.

Alisa d. Aussie Ana 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2 She blew so many leads, but got there in the end. Alisa has great mobility for someone of her size. She hit a number of exceptional winners while on the run and she managed to get to most balls that dropped close to the net. I thought that her baseline game would be too strong for Ana and I was right. Ana's behaviour clearly got on her nerves, so she gave her a taste of her own medicine. I'm sure that I heard at least one "ajde!" from Alisa Alisa's FH was soooo wild in the 1st set, and it had me quite worried, but she soon started firing winners all over the court. I could have done without the choking, but I thought that it was a great match. rebecca.proboards12.com/index.cgi?board=ozzie&action=display&thread=3958&page=1#218100

Just awful results all over the place. Hantu losing to Cornet made it a bit better, but still. I wouldn't mind Kleybanova reaching the SF, or F, or W for that matter, but she's probably going to lose to Dokic. This half of the draw is falling apart, Petrova for RU still looks good.

Goo A strange TB to end Fed/Safin - Safin went down 1-4 on a foot fault and went nuts and was on the brink of just giving up - and then Fed just gifts him the next four points. But of course gets it together with two big serves and that lovely BH pass. I like Fed's shorter hair and the way his new T-shirt shows off his body really well Fish and Baghdatis still in the first set. Who even cares about that.

It's surprising me how much I hate this result, but to be fair I never had to think about Dokic much for six years.

Dokic's continuing success is fascinating and thrilling - she's the only storyline of any interest in the women's draw. For all the talk about how the WTA is so much tougher now than at any point in history, Dokic's made a mockery of that.

On the pictures of last night's match, Kleybanova doesn't look too fat. I still haven't seen her play, but I was expecting a Dellacqua-style physique.

I'd say Dokic is an interesting storyline and I guess fascinating, but not thrilling to me anyway. And I don't think it tells us anything about women's tennis that we didn't know.

Hingis proved it only 3 years ago. Most competitive era? Sure...but that's because of the lower level of play.

And....truthfully, it's not worse, really. It's just more sloppy. It's more common to see upsets, I guess, but that's because of the randomness of these girls's games.
Let's not forget that Dokic was a Top Five player for a good chunk of time. She's not there yet. Hingis proved that a great player will always be a great player, but probably less great in her comeback (at least past a certain age).

Ha! It's fun to be a long-suffering Dokic fan now and get to see her multitude of hatahs fret and stew. :ass: NOBODY expected her to beat Woz. But it's disgusting to see Damir back in the headlines again, trying to catch a piece of reflected limeling. Sheesh, why does the media pay any attention to that lunatic? As for AI, I always think to myself "I like Ana", but I guess I don't really, since I couldn't care less that she lost. It's a lot more fun to see these Carlas and Alisas (and Jelenas! ) with their upsets than to see Ana reach the SF or final and collapse there.

' ... after last night's victory she felt obliged to apologise for the times when she had not helped her own cause. "Sorry for being a pain," she said to a crowd who made it clear they did not feel she owed them anything more that the entertainment she had provided. "No," she continued. "I really made things difficult at times." '
Good for you, Jelena. Good to see you recognize these facts.
Nav is saying Woz will be top 5. She loves her game, attitude, presence, blah blah blah. But then it's only 3-1 in the first set ...

Woz played good early on but then got way way too passive and let Jelena dictate. Also tons of errors
This is where we would need Leach. She could dismantle Jelena's (and other BBB's) game like no other.

Alisa has great mobility for someone of her size. She hit a number of exceptional winners while on the run and she managed to get to most balls that dropped close to the net. Some of these heavy girls are bizarrely quick! I saw JenCap play in Philly a couple months before she reappeared lean and fit. She was pretty hefty; her legs looked like tree trunks! But she could really scamper on that court. So maybe fatness is a tactic to lure opponents into believing they're playing a sluggish tub of lard and then get to all their balls.

I'm happy to watch the Dokic run - I was neither fan nor hater back in the day, but after what she's experienced it's good to see her find some success again. I don't think it's as embarrassing for the WTA as Hingis dismantling everyone immediately, or Fatrena bullshitting her way to the title here in '07. Dokic played a reasonable schedule last year, she's hardly starting at zero, and she was successful enough in the Hidden World that you could expect her to go toe-to-toe with Tour opponents. And she played very well. Good matches are always a good advert for the game.
I don't even care about Damir's return, because drama is good as well. As long as Jelena keeps away from him herself, he can spout as much entertaining bullshit as he wants.
I've done a Sharapova on Ivanovic - she used to be a favourite, right up until she actually won a Slam. Now, she pisses me off, with the fake-ass fist-pumping and the endless ineptitude. I was actually glad that Eurosport cut away from the match after the second set, because she was irritating me so much. Also, her winning RG helped crystallise my feelings re: the Serbs - as much as she can annoy me as well, it's Jankovic that I love.
When Goo played Hanturexia at Wimbledon last year, they were about as fast as each other, ie faster than you'd expect of an obese girl like Kleybanova, but still slow as molasses. One difference - the balls that Kleybanova does reach, she can still clobber. Her running FH was pretty dangerous.

For all the talk about how the WTA is so much tougher now than at any point in history, Dokic's made a mockery of that. That's what people said when Hingis came back in 2006. I don't think anyone is saying that now.
