I read somewhere that Czech names should have stress on the first syllable, but apparently Nav disagrees. She should know, though.

And, if he wants it right, it should be SA!fina, the A! not as in "bat" but in "far." That's true. Russian names are somewhat tricky to pronounce 100% correctly because of the vowel reduction and spelling doesn't give much clue to the outsiders, but the commentators should really know which syllable is stressed. I don't know how the ESPN crowd does it, but the British commentators on Eurosport always say Yeh-LAY-na (Jankovic) when it should be YEH-leh-na. We have yeh-LAY-na too. Occasionally you'll hear somebody do a YEH-le-na, usually on the Tennis Channel. Funny, the one they get right is koozNETsova. Rough to screw that up: KOOZnetsova sounds weird in any language, I guess.

...now that I think about it, Fowler does like a good KOOZNETSOV-uh every now and again. He just wants to stress the whole name, like he has constipation every time she wins a game.

Funny, the one they get right is koozNETsova. Rough to screw that up: KOOZnetsova sounds weird in any language, I guess. Actually, it's KooznetsOva. ;D Zvonareva is ZvonarYOva. Or more exactly ZvanarYOva, but I doubt anyone would want/should pronounce it like that. Elena (Dementieva) is Yelena like Jankovic, only the second syllable is stressed there.

Like SharapOva, KournikOva, NavratilOva. So Kuz is a rarety! And some do say DemENtyava. In fact that's the way I think of ED's name, so that one must have sunk in at some point.

I like Norm Crist. I saw him in Toronto and felt like I was seeing the biggest tennis celebrity. Anyway, Almagro is fussing with him about the challenges.
Oh! Crist says he can't ask his coach whether to challenge or not! But everyone does that! Maybe the umps got together and decided to start clamping down on that practice.
Now Almagro is going at it with the referee.

Zheng cruising, as she should. Az-Am all tied up; I hope TC will show that for a little so I can see what the Vika show is all about.

K-Bond has a 2-1 H2H on her, so "as she should" is too strong. But Zheng won the most recent match post-Wimbledon heroics. Still...

Don't be sad, your K-Bond might turn this around. Anything can happen because it's not a Top Player vs Lowly player. I hate Azarenka's whooping sound. I thought with maria out we'd be whoop-free. Also screams COME ON!!!

I swear I heard him say "Illya Kuryakin". I had a big crush on him on the Man from U.N.C.L.E.! But it sounded like KuzNEETsova Now I'm more confused than ever and therefore maybe should not root for anyone from that part of the world. Except for DemENtyava.

Didn't you come up with Shrieky Vicky? She's the worst on Tour, I think. No trail, but very very loud.

I thought Nav said was the third syllable! Look, this is why I hate Europe. It's lazy Americans' fault. Also, for more proper European pronunciations, one of the Aussie sounding guys on ESPN360 knows all of them. Along with Ms. Navratilova.

The stupid thing is that Elena in English is pronounced eh-LEN-ah. We make things wrong for no reason.

Goo isn't quite as loud with the shriek, but it's there. And occasionally she's silent, which makes it more annoying.
Another annoyance: Remember how Potato Head whined that he wanted the fast blue court because he had extreme delusions he could still win?
Well, why are we getting the high bouncing, sticky surface, "slower than the US Open" stuff already after 1 year? Grar.
