Thailand hoping to ambush Aussies 06 Jul 2004 - Eleanor Preston With Australia being handed a tricky away play-off against Thailand on 10th July, Evonne Goolagong Cawley and her squad face the tough challenge in their bid to secure a place in the World Group for 2005.
Under new ITF Fed Cup rules, the winners of July's play-offs will go into the newly created World Group II. The teams who made it through the first round ties in April will comprise World Group I.
The success of players like Tamarine Tanasugarn and Paradorn Srichaphan means tennis is hugely popular in Thailand and they should expect noisy, vociferous support for the home team.
Goolagong Cawley thought it was a tough tie for her squad when the draw was made - and the withdrawals of Alicia Molik and Rennae Stubbs are unlikely to have changed that opinion.
But despite defeat against Russia in Moscow, the Australians were buoyed by a creditable performance against the Fed Cup favourites, notably Australian No.1 Alicia Molik's win over World No.5 Anastasia Myskina in the singles. Molik teamed with Rennae Stubbs to push Molik and Rennae Stubbs pushed Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Likhovtseva to third set tie-break too, all of which will have boosted confidence in the Aussie camp.
"I was very proud of the Team's efforts in Moscow," said Goolagong Cawley. "We have our sights set firmly on playing in the World Group II in 2005. While we would never underestimate Thailand, I believe we have an excellent shot at qualifying based on our current form."
Although neither Molik nor Stubbs will be present this time around, Australia's recent record in play-offs gives cause for such optimism. Last year, having lost to Spain in the first round, they secured a World Group place by beating Colombia in what looked, on paper at least, like a potential banana skin.
The Aussies will be buoyed by the return of Fed Cup veteran Nicole Pratt, who was sidelined by a stomach injury for the tie against Russia.
Thailand has plenty to play for too, having languished in Asia/Oceania Group 1 in recent years. In 2003 they were defeated by Japan in their first round play-off. They set up the battle against Australia by cruising past India.
Tanasugarn may be pessimistic about her team's chances, but, as the veteran of 28 Fed Cup ties, she knows better than anyone that the competition is seldom predictable.
"Anything can happen in the Fed Cup," she said, "so we still have a chance, especially if we are inspired by the fans to turn the situation around."

World Group Play-off Draws and Results 10 Jul 2004 Thailand, Indonesia and Slovak Republic are poised to book their places in World Group II in 2005, while the remaining ties, where the first day's play has been completed, are all square.
Indonesia made full use of home advantage to take a surprise 2-0 lead into the final day of the Fed Cup World Group Play-offs against their more fancied Slovenian opponents in Jakarta. Thailand also hold an unexpected 2-0 lead overnight against Australia, who are without No.1 Alicia Molik.
2003 Fed Cup champions Slovak Republic quickly established a 2-0 lead against Belarus and now need just one point from tomorrow's three rubbers to stave off relegation. Brazil and Croatia were forced indoors as torrential rain eliminated any hopes of play outdoors. Both nations took one rubber each when play finally got under way.
The remaining ties are also delicately poised with honours even going into the second day's play. Switzerland has taken the first rubber against Canada and was leading in the second match when thunder and lightning prematurely ended play for the day.
