This US Open draw show on ESPN is so unnecessary, but it's led to some fun moments. First question of a Serena interview: "All you win is slams!" But, Ree refused to take the bait. Sigh.

So weird to see Andy Murray at the bottom of the draw.

Murray has INVADED the draw via CHEATING.
Anyway, remember when the idea of Gasquet versus Spanish Gasquet was actually exciting? When was that, 2005? I would like to once again pat myself on the back for getting on the correct bandwagon.

R16 Federer has a really nice draw and will play... a qualifier. Neither Blake nor Robredo won a US Open Series match (well, Tommy beat Bogomolov but that hardly counts), and all of the other main draw players blow. Querrey vs Davydenko. King Kolya will retire for fear of hurting his wrists. Andreev is definitely a danger man but I will stick with Djokovic who is 4-0 against Igor. The other berth goes to... hmmm... I have my doubts about Stepanek and also Kohlschreiber, and floaters like Mayer and Seppi could be tough. Let's assume that Kohlschreiber will recover from his post-DC funk and go through. I'll take Haas Been over Verdasco even though Verdasco is the more rampant at the moment, becasue of the head to head between them. Roddick should survive Hanescu or Isner to face him. Jo-Willy probably needed a good draw, and he got it. Berdprych or Gorila? Berd has won the last three meetings, all on outdoor hard, and did R16 at Wimby and AO, so I'll say unenthusistically he will survive. Monfils has been fairly inactive and might lose 1r to Chardy, so I think Ferrer or Acasuso will go through ultimately. Fit Dave's only summer hard court losses have been to Federer and Nadal, and he beat Wawrinka and Cilic in Cincy, so I'm assuming he is in decent form. I am not convinced by Chucho's New Haven run -- in the longer term he has sukked this year since the SA clay swing. Ferrer's opponent will be Rafa -- I don't see anyone in this bracket who can keep him on court enough to expose his gimpy knees (sorry, Wussquet). Del Potro is the class of his bracket, and should survive to play.... hmm. It's hard not to think that Twilight is overseeded. But he should at least get to the third round handily, where he will have a tough match against... hmmm. Resurgent JCF, adieuing Gnome or underrated Petzsch? I think the Gnome will beat JCF but lose to Petzschner, who will then... um, lose to Simon. In the final bracker, the second seed will face in the R16 -- hmmm, Stan the man or Cilic? Tough choice. Let's go with Stan, who has owned the Croatian. ----------- QF Federer - Querrey Djokovic - Roddick Berdprych - Ferrer (!) Del Potro - Murray SF Federer - Djokovic Ferrer (!) - Del Potro (!) F Federer - Del Potro Roj wins.

If Nadal has a rough day, anyone could get through that third quarter. It was hard not to pick Chardy for a deep run.
My picks are so seedy. Men's tennis!

4R: Federer, a qualifier, Querrey, Davydenko, Djokovic, Mayer, Verdasco, Roddick, Tsonga, Berdych, Chardy, Nadal, Del Potro, Ferrero, Wawrinka, Murray
QF: Federer, Querrey, Djokovic, Roddick, Tsonga, Nadal, Del Potro, Murray
SF: Federer, Roddick, Tsonga, Murray
F: Federer, Murray
Champ: Federer
Honestly, the Flake/Boredo section is so weak.

R16 Federer has a really nice draw and will play... a qualifier. Neither Blake nor Robredo won a US Open Series match (well, Tommy beat Bogomolov but that hardly counts), and all of the other main draw players blow. Say, my qualifiers are Polansky and Young. Devvarman has a winnable match against Gil... But Falla drew Haas Been. The Turk is in with a shot against Crochus. Zeballos is listed as a Bolivian. Oh... "Horacio Zeballos (ARG) worked so hard to qualify, but it was all for nothing. The tournament director has apparently decided to replace him with Federico Zeballos (BOL)"

"Horacio Zeballos (ARG) worked so hard to qualify, but it was all for nothing. The tournament director has apparently decided to replace him with Federico Zeballos (BOL)" LOL. They put in Erika Sema instead of Yurika Sema as well. I emailed them about this angrily yesterday...they are both fixed today.

Oh, man! You'd expect them to be more professional than this -- or at least bigger tennis fans, so they'd have some awareness of who's who, even in the Hidden World. But what can we expect from the organization whose top dog so famously called the women's champion by the wrong name at the trophy ceremony.

I assume that the ITF has a database of names, and when they start typing in names, like in many programs, shit pops up automatically, and they hit Enter so they don't have to keep typing. And they start typing up "Zeballos," and "Frederico" comes up before "Horacio," and they hit Enter without realizing that, hey, Federico Zeballos is ranked 1326 and is probably not a qualifier. Same with the Semas (Erika comes up before Yurika).
So, you're right in that (A) they shouldn't be sloppy and (B) were you not following the qualifying draw?!?! Why don't we switch jobs then? Would you like to be a menopause paralegal or a government narc? Both are hiring.

If John Roddick were still playing and if his name were Abner, he might have found himself in the main draw.
