Great and deep talent, like Thomas Johansson as a Slam final opponent. Safin beat the great Pete Sampras that tournament and Tommy Haas in a 5 set thriller in the semi's and he was toast for the final. It's that simple. It happens. Safin had 2 grand slam match wins over Sampras and 2 over Andre Agassi both all time greats. Who else can say that? I'm tired of hearing Marat was a waste nor a bust he wasn'y. Yes he underachieved to a certain degree but he's going to end up in the Hall of Fame on merit and that's the botom line.

Disappointing effort from WussKiss, but the guy didn't even "touch a racquet" for 2 mos. so heck with him.

The Cat and his precious hall of fame. Marat was a waste of talent, plain and simple. We should be comparing him to Federer and Nadal, and the only reason we're not is because Marat is a lazy nincompoop.
And I wouldn't be so sure he gets in. I doubt Newport wants a jackass up there that will tell everyone to go fuck themselves.

Hmm. I have a feeling that Stosur/King could be an upset in the making, based on Stosur's struggles against Ai and her not-exactly-confident statements afterwards. Dammit, I should have put money on it. King serve-and-volleyed on match point, successfully. Would that more women could serve matches out like that. That was fun to watch.

What a fun match tonight! I'm so happy they put the men on first for once, so I could see them before falling asleep. I loved watching Greul! It's great when you root for a Hidden World guy for a couple of years just because of his name and then you finally get to see him play and don't hate him. And Darren Cahill is the best tennis commentator in history; I love him more and more. It's especially a pleasure to listen to him after having to listen to Brad Gilbert earlier; the contrast is so striking. Hey Brad: "aggressive" is an ADJECTIVE; the adverb is "aggressively". Get it right just once before you die!

Serena is in form. Tournament over.
Cahill is ok. He usually just adds the company line, thus he bores me.
ESPNers who need fired: Maria Jose. I loved her when she played. She is the most wooden "analyst" there is. Enberg. Fowler, still. Gilbert. P. McEnroe (when he goes too far with the US stuff, and babbles about players he likes... which on ESPN, occurs at least 75% of the time)
Tennis Channel has Navratilova doing nearly every match, so I don't have to leave. Or, Arias, he's good too. Jimmy Connors is horrible, and TTC needs to stop kissing his drunk ass.

Post by janie on Sept 3, 2009 7:57:25 GMT -5
Cahill probably bores you and not me because you know a lot more about tennis than I do. He points out things the players are doing that I have never noticed. I also appreciate that he never stops attending to the match he's commentating, unlike J. McEnroe, who's also a great analyst but who easily loses interest in a match and goes off on other topics all the time, talking right through points and not noticing it's break point for some scrub against Federer, for example. Though John is superb when a match does engage his interest. Mary Joe is also a good analyst when she commentates with Cliffy. They both have a dispassionate, analytic style that I enjoy and they complement each other well. She also speaks English well, which is a relief after having to listen to BG garble the language -- though Luke Jensen was even worse with his constant "he should've went".

I agree about J. McEnroe. Even his tangents are entertaining, if they happen when there's a genuine lull in the match. Could've done with some of that between 4-4 and 14-14 of the Wimbledon final.
One thing I've noticed since tuning into USian feeds this tournament is that your commentators don't even try to shut up while points are being played. Eurosport and BBC, always.

Safin = waste
Cahill = brilliant commentator
Both Gilbert and J.McEnroe = annoying in an entertaining and often informative way. (They would probably cease to entertain me and just annoy me, as they used to, if I watched the broadcasts more often.)

I agree about J. McEnroe. Even his tangents are entertaining, if they happen when there's a genuine lull in the match. That's true, those tangents are entertaining. But sometimes he decides in the first game or two that the match is basically over, and hardly pays attention after that unless something huge happens to force him back to the game. As one of the handful of Greul fans on the planet, I didn't appreciate the way John wrote him off almost immediately. But Greul later forced him to revise his instant opinion, and I loved that. As for US commentators talking through the points: they do admit that they shouldn't do that, but that never stops them.

It's funny watching from the 80s. We used to have to shut up during points. I don't know when that changed.
Agreed on John. I hate when he does the early predictions, and he gets bored with matches too easily. Also, CBS, please stop forcing him to do Women's Tennis. It's almost like he's reading lines during Williams' matches.
I'm sure Cahill would be better on another network. When ESPN thinks you're a niche sport, which they obviously do with tennis these days, they dumb it down to "YAY WILLIAMS AROD BLAKE and whatever "rising" young Amurrkins."

Yeah, definitely. Read an impressive quote from her on the Bodo blog about that serve-and-volley on MP:
"I'd tried a serve and volley earlier, and kind of knew that if I served to the backhand, she would slice the return cross-court (the safer shot) most of the time. So I thought: On a big point like this, she probably won't go for anything spectacular. . .so I'd have a chance to go for a shot. And I knew that if I went to the net, it would make me be aggressive, no matter what. And it worked."
Thinking like that on MP for the biggest victory of your career!
