It's always nice to see Stupid Saturday ruined. It's been Stupid Saturday more often than it's been Super Saturday the last 10 years or so. Super Saturday was tremendous back in the mid to late 1980's until the mid to late 1990's. It really was Super Saturday with the women's singles final and the men's semifinals on the same day session card.

No, it's always been Stupid Saturday. Many men's finals have been ruined thanks to CBS being greedy. Along with any significant rain delay forcing the final to Monday, where most CBS affiliates won't even show the match, thanks last year.

Along with any significant rain delay forcing the final to Monday, where most CBS affiliates won't even show the match, thanks last year. Agreed. Except for your first sentence because Super Saturday really was super a long time ago. Greed is the problem here. Federer will be well rested for the final while the finalist from the other half of the draw will probably limp into the final tired and hurting. When was the last great men's U.S. Open final? The men have often played great Wimbledon finals in recent years but why not at the U.S. Open?

Super Saturday was only acceptable then because tennis was rarely available on TV, and it was popular. It's always been horrible concerning fairness and quality.

Also, it's cold and very windy, so if they do play, expect ugliness.

what's the reasoning behind having Silliams play Clijsters before the match of the unknowns? The USTA is trying to give Serena the chance to be the first women's finalist this year while the unknowns battle it out afterwards and if rain comes oh well then Serena would already be in the final. It's that simple. It's too bad the ITF which runs the grand slams can't control grand slam scheduling to avoid scheduling fiasco's.

With rain delays, it's possible they might not be able to show the last match, and they sure don't want that match to be Silliams vs Saint instead of unknown vs unknown.

It's weird. When they built Ashe, Melbourne already had a roof. Surely the thought of building a stadium with a roof must have crossed USTA people's mind back then?
On the other hand, I don't remember many rain delays from the late 80's/early 90's. I wonder if there has been some climate change in recent years leading to more rain and storm at the East Coast in late summer.

There were just as many rain delays back then. '91 and '92 QFs were, I remember. '85 SF screwed McEnroe in the final. '88 final. '96 final.
Late summer leads to a majority of fair weather in the East, but during 2 weeks, odds are high that a storm will arrive. And when the schedule is compacted to where any storm Friday-Sunday ruins things... the USTA just asks for it.
