Mary Pierce was Canadian.
Amelie is the greatest French Champion in decades. I agree, they underperform considering their population, tennis being so popular there, thir first world country status and the wealth of the french tennis federation.
In football the french also depend much on people from the former colonies, Zidane being the best example.

Canada advanced to the WG playoffs. I thought that El Duque and Castano would give Woz and Fich a battle, but they didn't come close. In the Euro-Africa section, - Sweden advanced by whooping Austria. In an odd result, Arvidsson smoked Bammer 1 & 1 (it was indoors, I guess). - Slovenia advanced by whooping the Swiss. Batty Patty did not play the final because of "flu", but i see she recovered in time to march to the Paris title this week. In the ever-popular Asian zone, Japan edged Taipei to advance. R1 - K.CHANG (TPE) def. A.MORITA (JPN) 7-6(2) 6-4 R2 - K.DATE-KRUMM (JPN) def. Y.CHAN (TPE) 7-5 7-5 R3 - R.FUJIWARA / A.MORITA (JPN) def. C.CHUANG / S.HSIEH (TPE) 6-3 6-3 Team Akgul sent the Indons packing to the Asian Group II. KAZ failed to advance despite their hefty investments in human resource recruiting.

Justine Henin breaks left finger
BRUSSELS (AP) Justine Henin has broken her left little finger during training and is out of the singles for Belgium's Fed Cup matches against Estonia.
The right-hander plays with a single-handed backhand, but the pain was still enough to rule her out for Saturday's opening singles. If she plays at all, Henin might come back for Sunday's doubles.
Henin said the injury would not have kept her from playing in a regular tour event, but because Belgium has such a strong team, there was no need to force her into the singles matches.
The break occurred on Wednesday but the extent of the injury only became clear on Friday.

Why is there more Williams Fed Cup drama again. Have people not realised their deal yet.
It looks like poor captaincy from Fernandez, tbh. Why let yourself get strung out until the last minute? Set Venus a deadline, in private, by which she has to decide whether she's fit or not. Then announce your team. And don't even get your hopes up about Serena unless it's an Olympic year. End.

JJ won her first match in front of a crowd of 25 people. Sounds like the US ties of old. Italy's off to a good start, 1-0, despite the continuing absence of Fishin' Hat, although she may be commentating for Italian tv.

JJ won her first match in front of a crowd of 25 people. I just saw the last few points of her loss to Danka. On clay. Henin just lost to KK, and it seems Clijsters will indeed be taking the whole of the clay season off and let the little people fight for crumbs.

Rybarikova is so amusingly inept on clay.

How did Makarova and Alla K get picked? Even with Sharapova and Safina injured, did Sweater, Nadezhda, Bepa, Goo, A Pav, Vesnina, *MaKiRi* and Douche all say no? Beth isn't even in the top 100 right now.

I know Sweta and Nadezhda declined. Alla is the 13th ranked Russian.
Seriously, when RUSSIA doesn't care about this, that's it. Over. Stop it.

It seems apt that this competition seems to have left Justine and Kim on their deathbeds.

Ha, Justine is playing this week, I think. And St. Kim was famous for rising from her death bed in agony to 60 61 herself all the way to Slam finals.

I'm typically happy with whatever happens at the Fed Cup just as long as the US doesn't win it.
Now I'm not so sure - I might like a Willy-less US to win it just to see the disgruntled Willitards foaming at the mouth.

I can only stand Fed Cup if the few countries who care about it, who consistently field their best players, win it. So Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, and until now, Russia, are my preferred winners. But a victory for this particular US team, as presently constituted, would be .

I wouldn't lump BEL with them. Justine & Kim haven't been regulars.
To further show the importance of the USA-RUS tie, RUS couldn't find a 4th player, and the USA 4th was Sloane Stephens.

So, Bethanie Fattek-Sands and Coco Vandeweghe are in the Fed Cup final. In San Diego indoors where nobody cares. Good Lord.
