Day #5

I am very hopeful that big-hitting but silent Goerges defeats big-hitting and hideously noisy Sharapova. But it's setpoint Maria. Oh, ace. But a challenge. And not even close to being out. Roar.
You know, Justine losing to Sveta somehow makes sense. Sveta has been playing so badly and her record against Justine has been so terrible that she had no pressure. Even better, Justine had no matchplay and yet somehow all the pressure. It's sad, though.
But I will draw one historical parallel which I think is really quite apt. Steffi losing ... I believe it was also 6-4 7-6 (!) at Wimbledon to Zvereva who she owned even worse than Justine owned Sveta. One year later Steffi was the French champion again and in the Wimbledon final. Maybe things will work out the same way but maybe in six months instead of a year.
I'm a bit surprised that Franny got through - I thought she might be a little tired after two long three-setters.
Future Slam champ Na Li destroyed Stryker 2 and 1. She needs to de-Shriek the tournament in the next round.
Venus-Petkovic. Andrea MUST WIN this one.

Fatty, I have a positive feeling about Petkovic. She can beat Venus and Maria! Andy Roddick is a tool. I just saw that ball he hit right at Haase's face. It's not ... illegal ... but it is not sporting. Would Roger do that? Rafa? Never. In fact, I have never seen anybody headhunt. I have seen guys try to hit each other at the net but never in the head. Retarded. The ESPN guys have spent plenty of time telling us that nobody likes Soderling and nobody likes Stepanek but funny how they don't mention that Roddick isn't very highly regarded. With the possible exception of Lleyton Hewitt, I can't remember a player with more personal feuds with other players than Andy. Well, maybe Rios.

It might be time to start counting how many times she says "you know". At first I thought that was part of the gag, but then I kept reading.
Two minutes is not long enough for a shower. What is wrong with her?
Anyway, wow. Thanks for the link, Fatty. That was ridiculous. The good kind.

Still, for a press conference, that was pretty good stuff. She managed to elicit some half decent questions. I've always wondered what her opinion on global warming was!

I'll say yay for Russian girl from Latvia Nastya Sevastova. I like her, and not only because she plays for Latvia. Her game looked good those few times I've seen her.
So from the article on her: A typical answer from a girl who admits having picked up tennis at the age of six in the "small" city of Liepaja (the third-largest city in Latvia) "because there was nothing else to do."
Liepaja is a small city and a pretty poor one, job offers are so limited there. And she's totally right about nothing else to do part.
"So far the only top player I had met in a Grand Slam was Kuznetsova twice at the US Open. This will be fun."
I LOL'd considering she played Justine in the 1st round of Wimbledon.

Ha, that interview made me like her more. Perfect riposte, really, if the media are calling her dull.
So not surprised that Justine lost to Sweta. Losing despite commanding H2Hs has been a theme of her comeback, she was dreadful against Mirza, and you have to think Sweta's somewhat motivated to put in a good showing again. Even less surprised that the match was dreadful.
Can't seem to stay awake long enough to catch a decent amount of tennis in the past couple of days, looks like I didn't miss anything today anyway. I'm not as high on Petkorazzi's game as other people are - sure her strokes are powerful, but they always look so awkward. She's super-fit though, and I'm guessing Venus's injury is serious enough to be the deciding factor?

Oh yeah, yay for Sevastova. She's really talented, I think. Actually when I saw her play Justine at Wimbledon, she came across like a player who's so innately talented that they've never developed a proper work ethic, and she's had several lazy losses...good to see her taking this opportunity. Hopefully she does something against Woz.

The Belgian elf lost. Good riddance. ;D Finally, the choking dog Sweata comes through (though I still won't forgive her AO '09). Queen Maria advances & Franny keeps rolling along- this is also good.
Today's results exceeded expectations. If Venus can somehow lose to Petkovic today, it's going to be pefect.

LMAO! If I remember correctly Fran was pretty annoyed when she became one of Kim's victims in her "I'm so injured, I can't play, but still just beat you in straights" at AO. Yes this happened at AO 2006, IIRC. Kim was in the midst of getting numerous MRI's done, while winning 6-1, 6-0 matches and there might have been talk about possibly losing a leg.

Circa 2006 Q. Were you surprised by her intensity? She struggled a bit with the injuries and after every game she was not sure how she'll go. FRANCESCA SCHIAVONE: I don't know about her injury. After this running, running, running, I don't know. I don't think that she is injured. I believe in Kim because she is very correct. But if you are injured, really injured, you can't run so much. Me, too, I have some problem to my knee, but is not big problem to say, "Please, Press, I have problem." I respect Kim, but she is very strong. I don't think that that injured can ‑‑ don't let her play. So no. Q. Schiavone accused you of overstating the extent of your injury. She said that someone who ran around like you did today can't be that badly injured. How do you feel about that?KIM CLIJSTERS: Well, I mean, I think, you know, that's 'cause she's lost. You know, some things can be said like that. But I'm happy to show you my MRIs if I have to. tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=63328

I watched some of Shar v Goer, but I was listening to Ils Sont Fous Ces Gaulois Vol. 3 so I didn't mind. After losing the first set she had a bulging vein in her ankle attended to, then I knew she would win.
Venus, who after years of training still cannot make a dress that fits properly, just retired after one game. So Petkorazzi should have good chance next round. I'd better find Vol. 4.

Ignoring your happiness about Justine's loss, I am here to complete your perfect day: Petkovic def. Villiams 1-0 ret. I wonder if it was worth it to wait all day long just to play 1 game. Poor Venus. I mean at least with Justine, she knew coming in that her elbow still wasn't right. Venus probably came in with high hopes. And she's 30. I'm still pretty pleased with Justine's comeback because she did make it through a tough opening round and you know that elbow's bothering her and she has always been bad at ignoring injuries while out on court. They prey on her. But I'm so happy for Kuz, so maybe that's another reason this loss doesn't bother me. But I'm glad I went to bed early on because, yeah, that match stunk. Off to read Woz's words now!

And the crowd booed her apparently, and mocked Sharapova's screams. Who do they think they are, the French? They SHOULD mock the screams, but it wasn't nice to boo Venus, who shouldn't even have attempted to play in the condition she was in but just wanted so badly to give it a try. What did they want to happen, have her play till her leg needs amputating?

Apparently WTAW overreacted as usual and only a few stupid people actually booed. Still stupid & unnecessary, off course. And it was Venus' 1st retirement since 2004!
Headline of the article on the official site: "Queen Maria makes a regal pass into the last 16"
Does she officially go as "Queen Maria" now? I get the fans calling her that, but on the official slam site?
