www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=441911"As the brother of Elise I can confirm the story... Elise has been attacked by the father of Karen Barbat whule watching her game. He was calling her names from the start of the game (all kind of racist things I'm not willing to repeat). After a while Elise said something about it, he then knocked her out with a punch and elbows to here temple. She immediately lost consciousness for about five minutes... After a while she was taken to the police station to press charges, the father and daughter flee, police still looking for them. At the police station Elise started the vomit continiously, an ambulance was called to take here to the nearest hospital. She's still on a intravenous drip with painkillers and needs to stay in the hospital till at least tomorrow morning (having a concussion and a bruised face)... My father and I drove to Halle (where Elise is in the hospital) and are now in a hotel, we hope we can take Elise back to The Netherlands tomorrow... The father/trainer of Karen Barbat will probably never see a (professional) tennis court again, that man is a true risk to all people around him!"

Wow, even on the challenger level parents are living lives through their kids. I wonder if Barbat could face some consequences for running away with her father.
Poor Tamaela. I think she had already retired from tennis in the mid 00s but came back again a few years ago. She might re-think her decision after this attack.

Looking at the draw, Tamaela must have been attacked as she was supporting a compatriot in a qualy match Ugly stuff. Hope she's OK.

Oh no! Horrible. Even Jim Pierce never knocked out one of the players. And ELBOWS? Is the man in custody, or is he just raging around London with the mobs now?

Ugh, just saw that it happened in Germany, where Gunter Parche wasn't even sent to prison for attacking a player ON the court. So I doubt if they can catch him that he'll receive more than maybe a mild scolding, though surely he'll be banned by the ITF from attending any tournaments. But apparently he and his daughter ran off. Poor Elise, but poor Karen, too, to have such a father.

Yike. As the cult's #1 Tamaela fan, I hope she's OK and that the Barbats are dealt with appropriately. I had never heard of Barbat until she won a Super Spoon this year. Maybe that made the family a bit edgy.

she won a Super Spoon this year. So, according to WTAW posters who translated ekstrabladet.dk/sport/anden_sport/tennis/article1598547.ece , Barbat spoke with a journalist who said Tamaela and friends were cheering loudly, "distracting" her, and her father tried to get them to calm down before the altercation. Also, SHE PUSHED HIM FIRST!!!1 Okay. And then, she says, he "reacted unfortunately." This interview was given via telephone, in the presence of her father, while they were FLEEING TO THE GER-DEN BORDER. Yes, sounds like they were not at fault at all.

Here is how that Danish article ends, in machine-translated version:
"'But I do not remember any more, and I have no more time'", she says, while a male voice raises his voice in the background. Here ends the conversation, when Karen Barbat hangs up.

Latest update, copied from TF: After the incident Elise was expected to make a statement at the local police station. "But that did not work, because she could not concentrate. She also was vomiting continuously , "said her brother. In the hospital they revealed that Elise incured a concussion, among others. That is why she had to spend a few hours in intensive care. "The doctors did not take any risks. In addition, she had severe pain and she was very frightened. Only this morning they allowed her off the ICU. "
Mihai Barbat is still on the run after he attacked the Dutch tennis player Elise Tamaela in the stands during the match of his daughter Karen yesterday. Father and daughter fled the scene after the incident and are still missing.
"They very quickly left the hotel and immediately drove to Denmark," Sander Tamaela suspects, the brother of victim Elise. "The police at least has not caught them yet. It was already known that her father was a man with difficulties," says Tamaela. "But I know that Elise has always been in good contact with Karen. A nice girl she never had problems with. All Elise said to her father was what are you doing?"
Elise Tamaela will probably be sidelined for a few weeks because of her injuries. "This week she needs absolute rest. Then, from day to day we will look how it goes," said Sander Tamaela. "She obviously had to cancel the tournament in Versmold. Although she preferred to play through. She did not want some guy to have his way with her like that."
