www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2012-01-10/201201101326184887611.htmlFORMER world No.15 Robby Ginepri will look to continue his return from a mountain-bike accident 15 months ago, with French journeyman Florent Serra his first-round hurdle in Australian Open qualifying.
The 29-year-old American will favour his chances, taking a 2-0 head-to-head into his match with the 28th seed at Melbourne Park.
Qualifying top seed Go Soeda, of Japan, opens against Czech Pavol Cervenak and stands as a potential final-round obstacle to Ginepri’s first Australian Open main draw appearance in two years.
Big-serving Aussie lefty Chris Guccione faces a similarly tough ask to get his qualifying off to a winning start with former Melbourne Park finalist Rainer Schuettler his first-round opponent.
The German veteran leads their head-to-head 2-1, but they haven’t played each other in more than three years.
Another player to have tasted defeat at the hands of Andre Agassi in an Australian Open final, Arnaud Clement, will look to recapture the form that carried him to the decider in 2001, when he opens against German Bjorn Phau.
Former world No.18, Russian fifth seed Igor Andreev, will look to rebound after letting match points slip against Alexandr Dolgopolov in Brisbane last week when he takes on Roman Brovanov, of Macedonia.
Ruben Bemelmans, who helped Belgium to last year’s Hopman Cup final, and defeated Lleyton Hewitt in Davis Cup play in 2010, starts his qualifying campaign against Yuichi Sugita, while Bosnian Amer Delic could prove a headache for fourth seed Turk Marsel Ilhan, first up.
Australia’s junior Wimbledon champion Luke Saville, aiming to make his first main draw appearance in a Grand Slam event, will square off against Ivo Minar, of the Czech Republic.

Tom Tebbutt tweeted perspicaciously that the Schwankster's opponent, Cabal, is his doubles partner from the RG final.

Mr. Tebbutt's on top of his game! Good luck to Jaziri, Armless, Sousa, Popsicle, Polansky, Ginepri, and all Latinos. Last year there was livestreaming from qualies here, I think!

There is livestreaming. Or there will be, anyway. Right now it's raining and thundering.

I didn't know there were 2 Popsicle guys in the draw! The Canadian one won, the CZE one lost. Polansky won, and so did Armless and Sousa. Clement lost , and I can't find Jaziri's score. Need caffeine. And AO needs to put their scores in some not-light-blue color

Good luck to Vasek Pospisil(CAN)[9] as he battles another local (Carsten Ball) Igor Andreev(RUS)[5] vs. Igor Sijsling(NED). This is a showdown between the #2 and #3 ranked Igors. Best wishes for good fortune to Canada, Slovenia, Wang, Hernych & Berankis.

Men's Qualifying Round Carsten Ball(AUS) vs. Denis Kudla(USA, the only teenager) Guillaume Rufin(FRA) vs. Bjorn Phau(GER) Rik De Voest(RSA)[11] vs. Matteo Viola(ITA)[27] Yannick Mertens(BEL) vs. Andrey Golubev(KAZ)[20] Lukas Lacko(SVK)[7] vs. Sergei Bubka(UKR)[25] Igor Sijsling(NED) vs. James Ward(GBR)[32] Denys Molchanov(UKR) vs. Florent Serra(FRA)[29] Simone Bolelli(ITA)[14] vs. Frederik Nielsen(DEN) Tim Smyczek(USA) vs. Jurgen Zopp(EST)[22] David Guez(FRA) vs. Jesse Huta Galung(NED) Illya Marchenko(UKR) vs. Martin Fischer(AUT) Peter Gojowczyk(GER) vs. Thiemo de Bakker(NED) Alexander Kudryavtsev(RUS) vs. Joao Sousa(POR) Roberto Bautista-Agut(ESP) vs. Andre Ghem(BRA) Alex Kuznetsov(USA) vs. Yuichi Sugita(JPN) Danai Udomchoke(THA) vs. Peter Polansky(CAN) Good luck to Polansky, Sugita, and Bubka. I like to think I follow the minor leagues fairly closely, but "Denys Molchanov" rings no bells whatsoever. He is a 24yo out of Moldova, now living in Kiev. Looks like he got a lot of his points on the Antalya circuit last year! I hope he beats that slug Serra.

Denys failed to do the job. But another strange one qualified, Peter Gojowczyk, 22yo, out of Munich, now living in Eisenhofen. He totally destroyed De Chokker. Hard to believe Thiemo made the 3R in 3 slams in 2010. Polansky.

Out of a whole bunch of...let's say random qualifiers coming through the men's field, Gojowczyk is by far the most confuzzling He now plays Donna Young, whose team gives the impression that they don't do much strategery. A complete unknown may really be one of the worst draws he could get.

I've heard of Gojowczyk! I don't know how. I had the idea in my head that he was a promising up-and-comer, but I don't follow the men's Hidden World, so I'm not sure how. He killed everyone in qualifying.
