Lost in the Isner shenanigans is we're getting a Granola run. Uggggh. Although, it will end with Rafa d. Ferrer for the 124324th time in the QF. I thought it was Rafa v. Ferrer in the SF once Andy loses to David. I can see your confusion though. Nobody would remember that TIPSAREVIC is a top eight seed.

Cosign Hurley's PGH so much!
I mean, there are several Pretty Girls I love as well. It's a certain type of Pretty Girl Fan that does my head in though, and for some reason the Kirilenko/Goerges/Cirstea/BAG types attract those while Cibulkova/Vesnina/Rezai don't. As Hurley says it's the mindless delusion and "too pretty to lose" mentality that grates.

I don't hate Goerges at all. I'll love her forever for those 2 wins over Woz. And I haven't seen a single creepy fan of hers on twitter (unlike Kirilenko). I have heard no hype (don't read WTAW much), so if Kaia won't do the job, I'll root for Julia with all my heart.
And yes, Woz can win a slam, it's SEWTA, everyone sucks. Plus if we get to Maria-Woz match, in any outcome I lose.

Post by Iorix on Jun 1, 2012 5:48:37 GMT -5
She sucks, that's why. I don't like Pretty Girl Hype, or PGH. It's just false. Don't say "Kirilenko is so talented with her variety that she should be in the Top Ten" or "Goerges hits the ball so hard that she's up there with Kvitova once she gets it together." Say "I WANT TO FUCK KIRILENKO" or "I WANT TO FUCK GOERGES." Don't pretend they're good. They Are Not. I want to fuck Dimitrov. He sucks at tennis 4-eva. The End. In Goerges' case, I feel that the reaction against the hype (main instigator of that at TF remains Serenidad) was stronger than the hype itself. She's fun to watch if you're into that sort of stuff and have a high tolerance to higlights reel tennis (i.e. don't really mind 3-4 random, needless UEs in a row if after that she hits one of those WHOA! huge shots), but easy to neutralise due to her glaringly obvious and easily exploitable weaknesses, and I'll admit she's probably somewhat overranked. Anyway, you should go see her match vs Peer at the Paris GDF. A big shotmaker walking on water is always quite a sight. I hope Sweta loses 1-6 1-6 to Aga with 52 UEs. She is the epitome of useless and go away. Plus so many people keep saying that she'll summon one of her random runs out of suckitude anytime soon, when the last one was what, 3 years ago, and she hasn't had a serve for the past two seasons at least.

The only possible predictor of Sweta's win today was a) her notable H2H with A-Rad, b) the fact that she's managed to get it up at Slams sliiiightly more than elsewhere even throughout her decline (eg last year's RG and USO).
Goerges = poor man's Stosur to me. Same weapons, though not quite as deadly. Same awkwardness and shanking tendencies. Same horrible BH. Same stiffness movement-wise.

Shhhhh. Let janie have her fun. Goerges = poor man's Stosur to me. Same weapons, though not quite as deadly. Same awkwardness and shanking tendencies. Same horrible BH. Same stiffness movement-wise. Reminiscent of Vaidisova too, in the nonexistent BH ROS and messed up BH in general and in the early takeback and wide swings from both sides, and finally Ivanovic in her usual clay MO of moonballing from the BH side until she can run around it to hit a FH.

Shhhhh. Let janie have her fun. I expected Sweata to limp to a loss as much as anyone else did, and I was looking forward to it. But I ended up enjoying watching her bring out the big serve and a little bit of fight. Even so, it was still hard to see how much she really cared, since Aga caved when she had her chances in the 2nd and Sweata wasn't forced to fight from behind at all. Anyway I should be posting this on Day 6.

I think Goerges' serve is really good IMO - raw speed, spin, placement all top notch, reliability perhaps not as much. But it's probably the kind of serve that looks like a weapon of mass destruction vs a bad returner like Woz and then meh against an actual elite player. Petrova is actually quite fit for her own standards these days BTW.

I thought Goerges' serve was good that year in Stüttgart. But as Corswandt notes...against Woz.
I sometimes wonder whether she'd have ever had a notable tournament (as opposed to...two, or three), had Azarenka not retired while LEADING her in that 2R.

There are different types of Pretty Girl though...it's not just about the looks. The straight men can probably explain better than the rest of us, but the BAG/Cirstea/Kirilenko types all seem to combine docile, doe-eyed femininity with fragile princessy on-court antics which makes their fans put them on a pedestal somewhat.

Agreed about the different kinds of Pretty Girl. It depends on where you're from too - I remember having an exchange with Corswandt about Cirstea. I think she's hot but he mentioned how she looked like an average Portuguese girl. I'm moving on to a different league here but does anyone remember Dementieva from RG 2005? I think it was the clothes but I kept mentally undressing her throughout her matches, kinda like I used to with Hingis at AO 1999. Sometimes, there is no explanation beyond "I really like looking at her" though.
Re: the fans, I feel bad for this generation. I remember being a teen and lusting after Hingis and Kournikova. But they were great players too so it was easier to get away with putting them on a pedestal. Also, I may be the only straight guy who thinks this but BAG is not hot especially if you focus on her body.

I believe Corswandt and Leena concur with you on BAG.
Demented is an odd case in that she genuinely never seemed to realise how hot she was. All the PGs we talk about it very obviously know it.
It's funny, Hingis was obviously a good-looking gal who was sexual as well as sexy but she never got the sex object treatment, partly because she was so young when she first emerged and partly because, y'know, Pornikova was there.

Agreed about the different kinds of Pretty Girl. It depends on where you're from too - I remember having an exchange with Corswandt about Cirstea. I think she's hot but he mentioned how she looked like an average Portuguese girl. Wow, how does everyone not move to Portugal? I hear the guys are crazy hot there too. Oh wait - they are broke. Never mind. As for Hingis, as I was watching some Giant Ball kids getting autographs the other day, I thought back to how I got Tina to sign her "The Champ is a Vamp" GQ cover after a doubles match she and Anna won at the US Open (my best friend Dustin went for Anna; you had to choose, too many people, not enough time). So, that was a sexy cover, when she was like...18 or 19, but yes, Kournikova kind of mopped up those chances. And it wasn't like Hingis was obviously hot to everyone and their mothers like Anna was (forehead, teeth, not the best body ever).

Hingis was 17 when she did that cover for GQ - that cover came in handy an awful lot for 15 year old me that summer. Hingis had the best rear end I've ever seen in women's tennis, but I'm biased ofcourse. Ofcourse then there was Anna...

OK, I knew that math didn't work since I knew you weren't yet 30. Hingis was born in 1980 so she's at least 3-4 years older than you, right? She might have been 17 but you had to have been 13 or so. Making this conversation extremely inappropriate.

Post by Old Hag on Jun 2, 2012 8:58:17 GMT -5
A lot of people don't think BAG is hot. Anyone who likes bodies beyond prepubescence. So, few on WTAW. Also, everyone is a guppy and the media has to settle for someone as the sex symbol, she was it for a while.
As someone whose main fandom came in the Pornikova years, it's hard to find any player today to be a sex symbol. Anna is leagues above everyone.
I've never thought of Hingis as hot. I mean, her face, c'mon. She always had an outstanding ass, though.
Cirstea's attractiveness has much to do with her exotic looks, like BAG. There's no girls like that in America. In southern Europe, I could see where that's commonplace. Sorana has a cute smile, but I don't see anything special with her.

VIP fans in particular have such a hyperbolic view of her it's beyond belief. Agreed about the different kinds of Pretty Girl. It depends on where you're from too - I remember having an exchange with Corswandt about Cirstea. I think she's hot but he mentioned how she looked like an average Portuguese girl. About 5-10 cm. taller, but other than that indeed average. In every highschool/college class there will be at least a couple of girls who look like her or better. Plus there's a glut of tall, svelte, dark haired TV starlets. Standards for brunettes are very high here for obvious reasons. Also, I may be the only straight guy who thinks this but BAG is not hot especially if you focus on her body. I believe Corswandt and Leena concur with you on BAG. Aye. Built like a tree trunk, no T&A. Demented is an odd case in that she genuinely never seemed to realise how hot she was. All the PGs we talk about it very obviously know it. Safarova is the player who strikes me as being completely unaware that she's good looking (at least from certain angles).
