Sveta's life would be very very hard in Russia if she came out. So I'd never expect her to do so. Exactly. I assume it's like with Marija Serifovic, the Eurosong '07 winner. Everybody here knows she's a lesbian, she knows we know she's a lesbian, but she still doesn't say anything and pretends to be interested in men, so we can pretend we don't know anything and tolerate her. It's really sad and hypocritical.

It's really sad and hypocritical. Thanks for explaining, you two. Plenty of public people don't want the headaches of coming out even over here, so that makes sense. Sweata certainly changes her outfits and hair to look more masculine by the year, so I guess she's "coming out" in an underground sort of way. Or I could be wrong, that's only her lifelong best friend in the stands and she's just a tomboy type. Time for me to watch Nole for the first time this tournament!

There's been some progress but it's really, really slow. For example, here in Serbia it's no longer a taboo, in a sense that people are starting to acknowledge that homosexuality really exists... in theory, because no one ever comes out.

When I was in Zagreb, I went to a gay club with a friend to meet some girls and it was a very underground scene compared to the regular clubs we'd go to every week. The Croatians I hung out with weren't homophobic or anything at all, but yes I never came across a gay man or woman there (although there was this one time at 4am waiting for the tram to come, this guy came up to me and started talking, asking me if I wanted to go with him to hang out at his place which I found a bit odd even in my post-drunken stupor).

The gay club was full of gay men, but I meant to say I was never introduced to or met any gay people although I made lots of friends and was introduced to a lot of people who I hung out with fairly often. Within that crowd, every single one of us was straight.

I believe 95% of the Balkan gays would rather be caught dead than go to a gay club. We have some in Belgrade too, I've never been, but some of my friends have. From what I understand, those places cater to a small and regular crowd.

From what I understand, those places cater to a small and regular crowd. It certainly appeared that way - there must have been less than 50 people and it was a very small space way in the back past two doors. Compared to the regular clubs I'd go to which had 200-300 people easily and were at times, twice or thrice the size.
