Serena will win the final 6-0, 6-0. Probably. And thankfully.

Who would have imagined this after the Razzano match.

You were right! 6-4, 6-3 is respectable.
She's lost 1 match since the Razzano incident. That's insane. Also, I was pretty sure she was done winning Slams/dominating like this after the RG fiasco.

If she bothers next year, she could go undefeated en route to the Grand Slam. I hope she does.

I mean, if the WTA is dying, then we need to show exactly how bad everyone else is. Maybe that will get some good women to start playing like champions. Because looking at who'll be left once Serena retires, the future is bleak.
But Serena probably won't retire for another 10 years, and why should she.

If she stays healthy, why not, really. Which is pretty unbelievable considering that back in 2002, I would have been shocked had someone told me she would still be playing 10 years later. I guess the danger for her is that if she starts dominating for a longer time, she might get complacent and wish to be fat on some Caribbean island again.
Also, with today's match, Eurosport's contract with SEWTA ran out. They'll only show Slams and some MMs from next year. I cannot quite fathom it yet, really. The end of an era.

Hey, at least there's no way in hell Radwanska will be #1 now. It is a bit amazing that all Serena did this year is only good enough for third place. Because this time she actually played matches - weren't they saying that she played more singles matches this year than any other? It shows you that Maria and Vika were pretty good too. And maybe one day one of them will win a match against her. I expect to see Serena reach #1 after winning Australia for the sixth time. Hey, but she won't win the French ever again, right?

If she hits #1 in 2013, that has to be the longest gap between first #1 reign and last #1 reign?
Maybe Evert went 11 or 12 years too ...

There's definitely an irony in the way that in the Williamses' youth, they (or more their fans and their dad) would make a big deal about moving on from tennis swiftly because who wanted to be doing that boring stuff when you could be businesswomen or fashion designers; plenty of Williams fans mocked M-Nav for not having a life outside tennis. And now look at them, Venus still travelling to far-flung MMs and Serena maybe more motivated than ever.
I'm way more optimistic about women's tennis than I was this time last year. Serena isn't just winning with her C level because everyone else sucks, she really is that good. Azza and Shazza are horrendous but the stability is a positive. Kvitova didn't do badly enough to make herself irrelevant yet. Wozniacki has gone away. The YEC in general wasn't a joke like it usually is. The post-1994 generation actually looks like it'll be somewhat decent.
I can't fathom the Eurosport thing, though...not that it will directly affect me, as I don't have Eurosport anyway and will just go with whatever streams are available as ever.

But I'd think there would be fewer streams to choose from. My best streams were always from Eurosport. But for me to look forward to more women's tennis, new stars really need to start stepping up. No way I'll be tuning in for more Masha-Vika tilts.

It's always funny how people project their favourite athletes' achievements on themselves. Like the fact that their fave player is successful somehow makes them worthier people.
I couldn't possibly imagine writing a 3000-word essay on Justine's greatness like that. Jeez, who cares.

God it's so badly written and badly thought-out even when it's right. The kind of writing that confuses speaking truth to power with hagiography.

I'd have been devastated with these news 5 years ago. We still have no other way to watch tennis here. Now I barely follow it anyway, plus there're streams. Don't know how available streams will be next year, because most of them were from ES feed, but I barely care anymore. Unfortunately for WTA the same can be said for many casual fans, and they'll have a hard time finding new ones without large European coverage.

Selling the actual tennis has always been way down on the WTA's priority list. Who cares whether people can watch the matches, just get Kirilenko into another bikini shoot.
