You didn't know us then, Lex. It was in Miami Beach, if memory serves.

It was more okay when Krud did it because he was substantially higher-ranked and more attractive.

WAY more attractive. But equally hate-able.

Somehow this story popped back into my head. I keep laughing at the idea of this silly bozo announcing imperiously, "Do you know who I am? I am BERNARD TOMIC!" I picture the cops looking at each other saying, Who? Bernie, you're nobody. Really, really nobody. Wake up to that fact.

Tomic has apparently been uninvited to the Australian DC team, too. This is due to a generalized lack of effort according to Tennis Australia.

Now it's his dad. Arrested in Madrid: Bernard Tomic's father arrested over assault
AAP May 06, 2013 6:53AM BERNARD Tomic's father John appears to have again landed in trouble, this time over reports he headbutted his son's hitting partner during a practice session. European media are this morning reporting Tomic Snr was arrested and jailed in Madrid after allegedly breaking the nose of a member of Tomic's team. The injured man is understood to be 29-year-old Thomas Drouet, a Frenchman and former player who is employed as Tomic's hitting partner. Tomic Jnr is currently in Madrid, where he today lost his opening round match in straight sets to Czech Radek Stepanek. Good lord.
Besides this, Bernie's season seems to be going the usual way, doesn't it?

Physically abusive to his son and a nightmare to everyone else. Shades of Damir Dokic.

Not that I want to be racist, but it does often seem to be the Balkan parents.

Why do parents feel the need to be involved in tennis players careers? Do they have no other fulfilling things to do? I suppose travelling the world and causing nothing but trouble is an option they can't resist.

Oh, and if that kid doesn't kick his father out of the team, he's just the same in my book.

Oh, and if that kid doesn't kick his father out of the team, he's just the same in my book. I hate Tomic as much as anyone, but that's harsh. That's a really hard decision to make, no matter how horrible your parents are. More so for a tennis player who wouldn't have their job if their parents didn't help them immensely.

What Leena said. Especially if Bernard is a victim of abuse himself.

Sooner or later he'll need to cut the bond. And sooner in this case is already late. As much as I can understand the cases of Wozniacka, Radwanska, Bartoli, Djokovic and the likes, where bad/good influence is debatable, this one with Tomic is a no-brainer. Just how far does Tomic sr needs to go for his son to realize that he's nothing but trouble in his team? It's a hard decision to make, but knocking your hitting partner unconscious should just about do it. Abusing people left and right and getting away with it... Ban him from entering ATP and ITF tournaments.

Perhaps he should do what Jelena Dokic did and go find himself an Eastern Orthodox or Muslim girlfriend, so his dad would disown him and he could break free.

Remember Bernard asked the umpire to throw out his dad in Miami. Do you suppose the breach is coming, then?
The Tour may force the issue by banning him from the Tour or suspending him for a long time.

He did seem a bit crazy.

Tennis Australia is going to try to find someone to coach the kid.

Some bad things have been written about Karolj Seles. He did seem a bit crazy. I don't know; I loved him. He always applauded his kid's opponents' great shots. He just looked happy out there watching his daughter play; he never took the whole thing so seriously. And the mom! I wonder if she ever did learn English?

The irony is that a lot of tennis parents get over-involved in their kids' careers because they think federations, outside coaches etc can be shady and not have the child's interests at heart.
Bernard apparently has a younger sister who plays juniors. Hopefully the WTA acts as well.

I remember he gave Gaby a high five after she beat Monica in the Italian Open final in 1992 - it's up on youtube! He was worried Monica would burn out and didn't want her playing so much - he didn't let her play the US Open in 1988 for this reason.
