"He beat me on a couple of big occasions, like here at the Aussie Open, I think fourth round, 9-7 in the fifth where I had match point and I was really coming strong then. I was just becoming a good player and he beat me at the Olympics ... also in Australia. So he beat me a third time in Australia. Now I've realised why I lost; he's better in Australia."

Nadal launches comeback with meaningless exhibition victory Posted on 06 February 2006 - 15:07
World number two Rafael Nadal beat Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in an exhibition match in France on Sunday, the first step on his return from an injury lay-off. The Spaniard injured his left foot while preparing for the Masters Cup in Shanghai in November and has not played a competitive match since winning the Madrid Masters in October.
Wearing protective tape on his ankles, the 19-year-old Nadal beat Santoro 6-2 1-6 10-3 in Tarbes, France, the third set being a super tiebreak format.
The French Open champion will miss Spain's Davis Cup tie against Belarus this weekend and is scheduled to begin his season at the ATP event in Marseille starting on February 13.
"I'm fine, it's better every day, but I'm still not quite there," Nadal was quoted as saying on his website.
His uncle, and coach, Toni said: "He will make his debut in Marseille, on a hardcourt, although we would have liked to begin on clay so that he could gradually gain confidence."
Nadal, who won eight of his 11 titles last year on clay including a maiden grand slam crown at the French Open, said he is not expecting too much.
"It will be difficult at first," Nadal was quoted as saying on the ATP website. "My goal is to arrive at the first two Masters Series events of the year in Indian Wells and Miami in good physical condition."

Sampras-led River Oaks field nearly set By DALE ROBERTSON Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Getting Pete Sampras for a single night is a huge coup for the River Oaks International. But the tournament itself — the club's 72nd going back to 1931 — is shaping up nicely now that the Davis Cup second-round pairings are complete and tennis director Van Barry has been able to see who's available. Among the top Americans, Taylor Dent and Mardy Fish are in and Robby Ginepri, the U.S. Open semifinalist last fall, will be coming unless he somehow winds up on the Davis Cup team for the second-round tie somewhere on American soil against Chile. For now, though, all indications are that James Blake will remain the No. 2 singles player for captain Patrick McEnroe, so he won't be returning to defend his 2005 championship, the title that re-started his career. Others who have signed on include former Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis, who beat 12th-ranked Tommy Robredo of Spain in San Jose last week, 2004 River Oaks co-champion Jiri Novak, top Austrian Jergen Melzer and a pair of workhorse thirty-something Americans, Paul Goldstein and Vince Spadea. Goldstein recently set a record for the most prize money won on the USTA's satellite circuit. Young vs. old Here's the perfect matchup for Pete Sampras in his exhibition debut: Donald Young Jr. The past vs. the future of American tennis. Young, 16, finished 2005 as the No. 1 junior in the world (he's currently fourth) and was too young to face off against the Grand Slam king, who hasn't played competitively since winning the 2002 U.S. Open. Sampras' last match was a victory over Andre Agassi at the Open. In his last match in Houston, also in 2002, he lost to Agassi in the U.S. Clay Court semifinals at Westside Tennis Club.

Quarterfinals set Overshadowed by Sampras' return were River Oaks' main-draw matches, which set up today's quarterfinals. Four seeds advanced in straight sets. The third-seeded Peruvian, Luis Horna, who won his first ATP title last month in Acapulco, survived a hard-fought first first set to defeat former U.S. national junior champion Scoville Jenkins 7-6 (5), 6-3 . Fifth seed Juan Monaco of Argentina ended qualifier Dusan Vemic's run 6-4, 6-2 . Sixth-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria beat countryman Stefan Koubek 6-3, 6-2. And eighth seed Vince Spadea took out 16-year-old Donald Young Jr. 6-1, 6-3 , coming back from a break down in the second set.

Spadea was down a break in a set to The Donald II? Sheesh. If he had somehow lost, retiring would not have been good enough; he'd have had to shoot himself. :shoot:

Semifinals (5)Juan Monaco (ARG) d. Vasilis Mazarakis (GRE) 7-6 6-7 6-3 (2)Victor Hanescu (ROM) d. Fernando Vicente (ESP) 6-4 6-0
"It's possible that the grueling Monaco-Mazarakis match — an often-brilliant clay-court battle — was among the longest played at River Oaks, a tournament that dates to 1931, but no official confirmation was possible. The first two sets lasted more than 2 1/2 hours, and Monaco's day was only beginning. Despite being treated for cramps, he returned to the court and won the doubles title with Luis Horna, but it required another struggle. They beat Thomas Enqvist and Hugo Armando 7-5, 3-6, 10-7."

Safin - who beat the world number one on his way to winning the Australian Open two years ago - and Federer head the eight man line-up for the tournament taking place January 10th -13th at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club where the Australian Open was played for 16 years between 1972 and 1988.

Federer, Nadal Let Rip in Seoul Clash It was a showdown of low, just-over-the-net strokes passed back and forth on a purple tinted court. At Tuesday’s bout between reigning tennis king Roger Federer of Switzerland and young gun Rafael Nadal of Spain, the audience was treated to an exhibition of the world’s greatest speed and power. The crowd was sending cheers the athlete’s way every time they fired off one of their blazing 200 km/h-plus serves or broke out with the hard shots. In their final match of the season, they were not afraid to pull out all the stops.
The king kept his crown in the end. Federer put out his forehand attacks and serves to beat Nadal 2-1 (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Shots aimed just a little off the line were particularly effective at goading Nadal into foul-ups.
The players debuted a variety of tricks they had been more reluctant to try in formal matches where a championship might be on the line. Nadal flew into the air for a smash that looked like a spike, exhibiting a showmanship that included throwing his body around to provoke drops from his opponent. Federer drew applause when he was repeatedly able to deflect dangerous backhand attacks that fell right on the line. He himself had to laugh when he watched himself in replay on the stadium’s massive screen.
Federer said he was satisfied to have shown the Korean fans an interesting match. Now he is to take two weeks rest and then start preparing for the Australian Open. Nadal said that the applause of the women fans gave him special strength and vowed to prepare for next season and reinforce his serve.
Ahead of the match, the two stars gave a one-hour long one master class to some 20 elementary and middle school students with dreams of becoming star tennis players. Federer let the kids in on the finer points of proper elbow position during serves. Nadal giggled when he failed to return some of the strong attacks the kids brought. After the match, the two stars donated US$50,000 for scholarships for kids.

Kuerten suffers second defeat at tennis tournament Three-time Roland Garros winner Gustavo Kuerten was defeated by Argentina's Diego Hartfield at the ChampionsTournament, held on the Petrobras Beach Arena, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian player, who used to occupy the first position at the ranking of the Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) , improved his performance in relation to Wednesday's match against Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui. However, it was not enough to prevent Hartfield from winning 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday. Kuerten has been attempting to get back in his former shape since 2004, when injuries started holding back his career. "I felt that my body reacted in a much better way today, but I felt very tired in the middle of the second set and I could not keep the rhythm,"said the player. Kuerten has no further chances to win the competition, but he still will face Brazil's Flavio Saretta on Friday, from which he plans to profit to regain rhythm. Saretta was overcome by El Aynaoui by 2-0 (6-1, 6-4) earlier on Thursday. Brazilians Andre Ghem and Thiago Alves had the most intense dispute of the day, in which the former beat the latter by 2-1 (3- 6, 6-3, 10-3). Guillermo Canas won his fellow Argentine player Sergio Roitman by 2-0 (6-3, 6-3). According to Kuerten, Canas and El Aynaoui have good chances of getting to the final game on Saturday Dec. 9.
