And is this what I've come down to? I have to cheer for Serena to make the final just to avoid another Ma$ha Slam. That's why I'm calm. As long as Serena is in the draw, I'm calm. I'm not actively rooting for Serena, but it is what it is. I also have a slight hope for Azza. (but there's no guarantee) And I turned this match off. there's nothing to see.

Beyond The Baseline @si_BTBaseline Sharapova routing Venus 5-1. Better battle is one currently waged between Sharapova's fans and the Rodionova sisters on Twitter.
^^still correct. Bit disappointed Anastasia's rising above their hateful comments but Arina continues to troll them.

Venus Williams, 1997:
Q. You said that you don't plan to be on the Tour very long. Why would you say that? What makes you think you might not play that long?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I can't see myself playing through pain and injuries, year after year doing the same thing. I can't see it. I can understand it would be hard to quit, especially when you're on top of things and you're the best. I'm not going to stay there that long because I don't want to say that I spent all my youth on tennis and didn't do anything else.

So the 2 and 3 seeds in women's doubles were upset, the 3 seeds by a pair of Aussies. Unfortunately, that was the only surprise this AM. Though when I went to bed I still wasn't sure Cake might not finish her task. I noticed I wasn't rooting for her, though. Poor Vee. I know she says she loves playing tennis, but does she really want to stay out there as a 2nd-tier player, never going deep in Slams or winning decent titles? Maybe she does, but maybe she imagines she can dominate again the way she once did. So glad I didn't see this.

One of the main takeaways I had from the Te'o story was that fact-checking in the mainstream media is dead (but when all the evidence and telltale signs were online, of course it took a web entity like Deadspin to unearth them by, er, basic google-stalking). The story itself, I feel like I've been witnessing variants on for a while now. Everyone's referring to Catfish, of course. On another message board I'm on, this exact scenario happened about 5 years ago. A couple of months ago, one of my friends tweeted this: www.52firstdates.com/2012/11/sebastian-pritchard-jones-strikes-back.htmlWOW @ that. Fascinating but tragic at the same time. These poor women! What were they thinking?!?! This happened to me, too, on WTA World back in the day. I was totally conned by a poster called "Kinky K" (Yes, I was 17). He was very popular and looked hot in his pictures. We would chat every night for a few months and planned to camp at Wimbledon for the '05 quarterfinals. Just before meeting up w/me he texted saying he had recently been ill, and had put on a lot of weight as a result of his medication. I was like whatever... met him and he was a fatty, totally different to his pix. We camped together and he tried it on but it was... weird. WTF was I thinking?! Anyway..... we lost touch and he left the board. His company was pleasant enough, and we enjoyed Davenport beating Sweta, and Ma$abot beating Petrova in a fun match from the front row. A couple of years later, the poster "Vacant" started posting and became friends with everyone. He even had a FB account under the name "Ryan Holiday". I was always really suspicious then one day things clicked and I posted this: www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=349153&highlight=What fuckery! I remember he told countless people he had cancer. Under his first name he told me his mother was seriously ill in a mental hospital.

They are.
Really, it seems like the fans of every top player eventually become unbearable, but Maria's and the Serena's fans are probably the worst ever.
But it's actually not a noticeable phenomenon if you just don't look at TF General Messages, or follow those players or their fans on Twitter.

And is this what I've come down to? I have to cheer for Serena to make the final just to avoid another Ma$ha Slam. I skimmed some scores the other day and realized that I was rooting for Serena, too. Not specifically to avoid a Masha slam so much as to avoid anybody else winning, because honestly, who are these people? I will never know. I think that I now one of those people I used to yell at on the Internet.

Both Sharapova and her fans are unbearable. It really looked good for them in early June last year, didn't it? Career Slam, she looked to be back!!!!!!1 while everyone else faded away, Serena was coming off Slam losses to Makarova and Razzano... For a second, it really looked like she might become the glorious and divine Queen Masha, the undisputed ruler of the WTA Tour, like they always made her out to be. I don't think they ever recovered from what happened since.

Post by janie on Jan 18, 2013 17:35:24 GMT -5
Serena def. Maria would be okay, I suppose, since there are so few other possibilities out there. I mean, if only it could happen, Azza def. both of those would be better, because you just know that Maria hates hates hates[/] losing to Azza, whom she sees as her inferior. Maria doesn't seem to mind losing to Serena, so that loss would not be satisfying enough for me. #evilgeezer
The worst nightmare would be Maria def. Serena. Then I might have to disappear until Sugarpovabot retires.
By the way, I learned why Li Na played 2 warmups: she had been practicing in cold China, and needed the time and practice to get adapted to the heat. Glad she has a reason that makes sense. Carlos is working her way hard.

I despise Azza so a beatdown at the hands of Serena would be great. I still think Li could surprise us all - the fans and media are obsessing over the top 3 so she could sneak under the radar and win (kinda like how Lindsay won all her Slams).

I actually thought before the tournament that Li might be the second favourite behind Serena - way behind, but on the basis that there was no way Ma$ha or Vika would beat Serena, but if we got the Peak Li that happens once in a blue moon, she might be able to. But Li has been too patchy this year to entertain that thought much more.
