Six qualifiers here too? People will mock the low seeds (one seeded withdrawal and they'd have dipped out of the top 100) and entry list of the MD but this is quite a fun draw IMO. Pity Vekic and Hsieh landed in the same quarter. Hopefully Woz somehow loses early. Maybe Kumkhum can qualify and beat her!

Also, didn't A-Pav go to Baku last year? She's such a vulture, except she fails at it so no one notices.

She went to Baku in 2011, when she hit that insane amount of DFs in her two-set win over Solovieva. She went to Washington last year.

But actually that Q draw is pretty great. Not a travesty like Gugaland's.

N. Kichenok def. Mt Fuji 60 60. In case you're thinking Fujiwara must be a grandma by now, she's still only 31, but with her CHR of 84 having happened in 2005, she does seem like a tennis , now floundering at 317. Akgul, Zarina (sorry, other Kichenok), and Luksika won.

Am I right in thinking singles is pretty much a bonus to Mt Fuji's doubles at this point?

This tournament = mess. Outdoor event in the tropics = rain, like last year = qualies still not done yet For some reason they scheduled the completion of the last qualy match - Amanmuradova vs. Savic - after a bunch of MD matches. This is the first time I can remember that qualifiers have been placed before qualifying is finished. The qualifiers so far: Kumkhum, Simmonds (WTA debut), Luangnam, Diyas, Wang. Vekic lost to Mattek-Sands in R1

You're probably right about Mt Fuji. Akgul finally managed to finish that match, then quickly ran through her r1 MD one, too (d. Kai-Chen Chang).

I just witnessed Wozniacki flopping to some anonymous Golden Flower in the first round. Many lolz.

Ahahahahahahahahaha yasssssss. Wang's first WTA win. She lost R1 matches to Mandy Minella, Chanelle Scheepers and Shuai Zhang last year but all it took was a better draw to score a win In Epic TB news, Tall Duan beat Sirotkina in a 14-12 third set TB. And qualifying finally concluded with Tall Akgul beating Savic in a 13-11 final set TB.

Wang trashed Woz, but couldn't handle Mayr It'd be funny if Wozniacki ended up being her only career WTA win. Kumkhum beat Daniilidou and Barty beat Diyas to make their first WTA QFs Barty is the first 16-yr-old at this stage since Vekic last year. Less welcome in the QFs are Mayr, Mattek and a Pliskova QFs: Patricia MAYR-ACHLEITNER (AUT) vs. Karolina PLISKOVA (CZE) (4) Ayumi MORITA (JPN) vs. (Q) Luksika KUMKHUM (THA) Ashleigh BARTY (AUS) vs. (3) Anastasia PAVLYUCHENKOVA (RUS) Bethanie MATTEK-SANDS (USA) vs. (2) Su-Wei HSIEH (TPE) Hoping for a Kumkhum/Hsieh or Barty final!

Pliskova d. Mayr-Achleitner 75 61 Morita d. Kumkhum 67 64 61 Pavlyuchenkova d. Barty 62 60 (and a terrible scoreline to boot) Mattek-Sands d. Hsieh 75 62 What boring SFists.

First final for a Pliskova?

BMS is in the SF!
11 aces for Pliskova in downing Mayr. Not bad!
So now we have Morita-Pliskova and BMS-Pavly. Pavly will probably win ...

First final for a Pliskova? It's her party, and Once-Little Ayumi has been bounced.

So it will be BMS vs a Plisk. A fun surprise ending for KL again.

I still remember the BMS pic from the US Open where the ball boy is staring at her rack. Haha. I'm indifferent to this final - okay maybe 60/40 in favour of BMS.

So it will be BMS vs a Plisk. A fun surprise ending for KL again. Nothing is fun about this final. Big bashy slug vs. USian scrub. I think Little Ayumi was the only SFist I felt vaguely positively towards.

I thought Mattek was fading away. She's ok, I guess. Better than one of the bashing Barbie twins.

Anything unexpected is fun for me. Though I can understand that some of you are just upset that Wozzy didn't make the final instead of one of these two. ;D

I like BMS. She has a creative game and some real net skills. Shame she didn't beat Clijsters a few years back.
She also beat Pliskova last year in their only meeting.

Remembering what happened to Woz is this tournament's only silver lining.
I don't really hate Beth, I'd just rather someone else made this unexpected run. Also, bitter about the Hsieh loss.
At least it makes Vekic's missed opportunity seem better - she's the only player to have taken a set off BMS so far.
