The seeds Sorribes Tormo is meant to be a promising kid, though.

I've seen worse qualy draws. And yes, SST is rising.
I thought Brianti was retired, though. That was weird.

I can't believe Serena is playing this AND drew Sesil! With possibly Bencic in R2! Only the fourth Tier IVA of Serena's career after Oklahoma City 1998 (QF, l. Joannette Kruger), Cincinnati 2006 (SF, l. Vera Zvonareva) and Hobart 2007 (QF, l. Sybille Bammer). Maybe her lack of a MM title on her resumé is her motivation.

OKC and Cincy were Tier IIIs and respectable ones. She also used to play the Tokyo fall event back in the day. Hobart, her ranking was garbage before winning AO that year at 200+ lbs.
This is the first time Serena has whored a MM for $$$$ in her career. Interesting.

Didn't she play the Marbella Slam some years ago and lost to Zakopalova in one of the early rounds?

Oh, yes. I missed that scanning through her results. She was just coming off...losing the Miami final to Vika, IIRC?
I think of Tier III-or-below (or the current "internationals") as MMs...OKC was the only one she played as a kid, Cincy she played after a six-month break when her ranking was in the toilet, similar to Hobart.

I remember Marbella now. Didn't she want to WD at the last second like usual but couldn't and whined about it. I don't know.

It is bizarre to see Serena here. She might lose. Can't imagine she'll have much intensity or motivation here.
And why is she here? Why not be in the USA prepping to play Stanford?

Maybe we'll get a Serena/La Razz final!
In TTR news for AMG, she won just three games off LiDL, against whom she'd previously held a 5-0 H2H.

Sesil served a thunderous 14 DFs. Serena won 2 and 1. Off grass, Pironkova won four games against the world no. 299 Andrea Gamiz Bencic choked a 4-2 final set lead to Tatishvili. Disappointing, especially as she would have faced Serena. Pfizenmaier with her second epic choke in the past month, blowing a 5-2 final set with MPs against Pereira, who's on the verge of becoming the first BRA woman in the top 100 in 20 years. Caroline Garcia continues to disappoint - 6-7 1-6 to Dulgheru, whose injury comeback this year seems to have been dogged by even more injuries.

QFs: (1) Serena WILLIAMS (USA) vs. (5) Lourdes DOMINGUEZ LINO (ESP) (3) Klara ZAKOPALOVA (CZE) vs. (Q) Richel HOGENKAMP (NED) (8) Johanna LARSSON (SWE) vs. Mathilde JOHANSSON (FRA) Virginie RAZZANO (FRA) vs. Flavia PENNETTA (ITA) Two players with victories over Serena are still in the draw Shame she'll probably get a chance to avenge that RG loss in the final, though.

WTA site had an interesting stat - Serena has 51 Tour victories as of this one today. Her previous high total for a year as of July was 38 wins, 10 years ago.
I'm not sure I've really adjusted to a Serena who plays a lot. This is really weird.

And, like, she's finally a dominant #1. See how that works?
Even with only winning 33% of the Slams...even with QF-W-4R. It's crazy. Although she surely thinks she should have Wimbledon. I wonder if she will go back to her old patterns because of that.

I'm curious what clicked in Serena's head and made her get serious about the tour and her fitness.

The pulmonary embolism, I think. She totally changed when she came back from it.
