The Deadspin commenters do a pretty good (as usual) job of calling Serena out on her bullshit. I always found it kind of funny that Gawker Media's 'jock' site had some of the most balanced and articulate commenters of all the sites in the family.

The line about Maria is funny, the one about Sloane part of an ongoing cat fight, but the other one....................................is screwed up.
She acts like a 15 year-old. I'll point out that really isn't unusual. I encounter full-grown adults on a daily basis with the teenager mentality. But, she has had a lot of experience in the public eye, so I'm surprised she hasn't found a way to publicly pull back a little bit. Unless she just doesn't give a fuck, which is entirely possible.

I lean towards the latter. When has Serena ever cared about being media friendly or savvy?

I actually just saw this story on some book blog twitter that I follow. I had to double check because I was so confused that I was seeing tennis story on my book feed.
Damn, Serena, that's just so disappointing.
"Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid..."
How could you call raping someone as just being stupid? How?
My take is that she's not smart enough to know when to pull back. Plus she probably sees nothing wrong with her opinion.

People have flaws. Hers is that she speaks her mind. If that can be considered a flaw.

The comment about the rape really disappointed me. How she can belittle rape like that and put it all on the victim is disgusting. She should be ashamed of herself.

“What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened. For someone to be raped, and at only sixteen, is such a horrible tragedy! For both families involved – that of the rape victim and of the accused. I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written – what I supposedly said – is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame. I have fought all of my career for women’s equality, women’s equal rights, respect in their fields – anything I could do to support women I have done. My prayers and support always goes out to the rape victim. In this case, most especially, to an innocent sixteen year old child.” serenawilliams.com/blog/statement-2/

In some cases, Deadspin is a more reliable source than any media now. That's how bad the media has gotten. I think what Serena said about the rapes was poorly worded and admittedly wasn't thought out. When you look at the entire Steubenville situation, her point can be considered valid. Of course, the wise move for the #1 tennis player is to not say anything about this unrelated topic and segue into selling crap, but Serena is Serena, and I appreciate that about her.

Stupid people say stupid things.
There is no indication she ever matured one bit. You have to have the brain of a teenager to call a person 'ugly on the inside' and a 'hater' for doing her job. This happened in 2011, not 2001.

LMAO @ how her apology once again turns into an extended paean to herself.
"What I supposedly said" - hrrm if she's saying RS made shit up you'd think she'd come out and say so in stronger terms. That smacks of mealy-mouthed hint-hinting.
I haven't been online much in the past day, I look forward to seeing how her fanbase defends this at TF.

While in no way a defense, Serena is the product of blame-the-victim rape culture. Her comments are not surprising, or out of the ordinary. Lots and lots of people, dumb and not, say stuff like this all the time. Generally celebrities are smart enough to not say them around reporters, but this is Serena. I do wish she'd stick to insulting other players than reminding me that the world is gross, but whatever.

Yeah, it's the whole reason slutwalks came about a few years ago. Serena's opinion surely isn't out of the ordinary, especially considering her conservative background (though she obviously doesn't follow all the tenets of her faith). I heard it once described as thinking that women in society are like tourists on safari, they have the right to visit the jungle/savannah etc. but they need to be careful because the place is filled with dangerous animals...which if you take to its logical conclusion means that women don't belong in open society, or should treat trips outside the house like foreign excursions and men can be absolved from agency because they're just like wild animals driven by on instinct. Great. That's exactly what the Taleban think too. It's the same thing conservative politicans were saying about the woman who died in Delhi: Why was she outside the house at such a late hour? (10pm) and furthermore, with a man she wasn't married or related to?

I guess I'll defend my previous statement.
The raped girl openly bragged about being 'trained' by the football team before this incident, and looking at the 'party' taking place that night, one can assume what was going to happen, or at least you can in the minds of these arrogant football players. After the rape, the girls involved didn't say anything. Nobody took action until the stupid boys finally got caught posting pics online dragging the unconscious girl around before raping her, many days later.
What the boys did was terrible and they should suffer severe punishment for their crime, but I do think it is fair to not feel overwhelming sympathy for the girl involved.

RVD, via a red dot: "WOW!! I didn't think it possible, but others have told me how clueless you are, and this post certainly confirms it. Congrats on reaching an unprecedented level of illogical reasoning. Just WOW!"
Others told him stuff about me when I post... once or twice a month (?)

Lots and lots of people, dumb and not, say stuff like this all the time. This is true. As ever with Serena, her inability to apologise properly is more enraging. Just say: oh, it was an off-the-cuff statement based on some terrible rapist-friendly reportage of the case (CNN got dragged for that), and make it clear that no woman is ever at fault for being raped. Rather than this "what I supposedly said" nonsense and then a paragraph about how great you are. The victim may have been a horrible person who'd shagged the whole football team and was passed-out drunk but it's still not incumbent on her to not be raped. It's a myth that your sexual history, state of sobriety, clothes you wear have an effect on your chances of getting raped. Virgins get raped. Nuns get raped. Grandmothers get raped. Telling victims to behave differently won't stop rape. Making RAPISTS behave differently will. Getting black-out drunk may have been silly, but most people do silly things every day and people who act sensibly also get raped.
