Wow, when's the last time a 14-year-old won a WTA match, even qualies? Impressive Argie Usue.
-- oops, she's USA. Born Argie, though.

Interesting that most of the USians are playing this instead of Carlsbad.

Arconada's impressive Q1 win undercut by getting double breadsticked by Mueller in Q2.
Pretty interesting draw. MLDB qualified and drew Keys, who was really disappointing last week - MLDB leads the H2H 1-0, and of course Keys will give her all the pace she loves.
Townsend should probably beat slumping FSG.
Is Capra back and going pro, then?

Arconada's still a tiny girl, so not surprising to see her fall.
What is surprising is to see her instead of Shishkina receiving a WTA WC as a 14-yr-old. But Shishkina has now turned 15 so presumably she'll be turning up more often in challenger draws, working her way up. Having left (or been kicked out of, who knows) Bollettieri's, though, she's likely to miss out on that lucrative WC pipeline + marketing machine.
Good question about Capra, so I looked it up. She's still at Duke Univ.; probably got the WC here as she's local to the area. So presumably she's still playing as an amateur.
More accurately, she actually got thrown out of Duke over the winter due to some academic violation. Oops! But she's allowed to return there, including to the tennis team, this fall, so that's why I said she's still there.

Academic violation Shishkina represents KAZ now, I wonder what went down behind the scenes with her. Defending champ Rybarikova just came from a set down to beat McHale, whose career has never gotten anywhere near back on track post-mono. Really an object lesson in how getting ill or injured at the wrong moment can really alter your career.

Capra won just 2 games from Ormaechea.

Not unexpected. Puchkova d. Stephens 7-5 6-3 I don't know though, I'm not convinced by this "Sloane Stephens peaks at the Slams" narrative developing. She's had very easy Slam draws. We'll see. If she ever wants to win anything she should start learning how to peak at MMs, though.

She should at least learn how to beat Puch!

Indeed! I would have thought that if any junior could cope with Niculescu's game it would be Townsend, who's unconventional herself. Obviously not: a 3 and 0 loss For once, Garcia was on the comeback end rather than the choke end: a win from 0-6, 0-3 down over the equally tragic Tatishvili. Why is Heather Watson going three sets with Alexandra Mueller

I really don't get Townsend's senior schedule. This year she's played:
Midland 100K (lost R1) Memphis WTA qualies (lost Q2) Indian Wells WTA MD (beat Hradecka for a boatload of points) Innisbrook 25K qualies (lost Q1) Charleston WTA MD (lost R1) Brussels WTA qualies (lost Q2) Edgbaston WTA qualies (lost Q1) Washington WTA MD (lost R1)
Which gives her a 3-8 W/L record. Why is she persisting with WCs into WTA events? She's clearly not ready for this level. Beating one of the most erratic bashers on tour means very little, regardless of the boost it gave to her ranking. I hope her team aren't sending her down the Donald Young route, she should have been playing the US ITFs this month (or the weaker Canadian ones).

I like how Taylor plays, but her style now is so not optimal for the main tour. I don't see how she'll ever be a top player with how often she rushes the net and plays spinny stuff while being terrible when she's forced on the run at all. It goes beyond fitness.

She may be taking the WCs for the $$. It does seem like a big mistake, though, since it's clearly not working.
As for her game: does she look like she may have the potential to add the missing elements? Or is she stuck permanently in a Wozesque state of being unable to move beyond a game that's too limited for the big time.

Well, well, well. La Puch trying to get us to pay attention to this event! This saga is c/p'd fr TF:
Fog Mountain @fogmount Puchkova smacks a ball in frustration and hits a line judge. She gets a code violation and the umpire calls the supervisor to the court.
@fogmount: Puchkova is defaulted. Ormaechea wins, 63 36 41. An ugly end to a messy match.

Oh my, Olga. Keys' disappointing USO series continues with a third set TB loss to Niculescu. Obviously it's not unknown for FSG to confound young bashers but this was all set up to be the swing where Keys could really make her move, at home and on her favourite surface, and she is...not. Caer Bear bagelled Oudin, as she should QFs: (1) Angelique KERBER (GER) vs. (7) Magdalena RYBARIKOVA (SVK) (3) Ekaterina MAKAROVA (RUS) vs. Monica NICULESCU (ROU) (5) Sorana CIRSTEA (ROU) vs. (4) Alize CORNET (FRA) Andrea PETKOVIC (GER) vs. Paula ORMAECHEA (ARG)

Rybarikova must really love this tournament - she beat Kerber in three then trashed Makarova 2 and 0 to make her second consecutive final here. And hopefully second consecutive title, much as I like Petkorazzi...

I saw Rybarikova close out the title. She played an absolutely incredible reflex half-volley winner at 4-1 up in the TB, just superb touch. She's great to watch when she's on, I approve this title
