Serena takes set 6-2. That score flatters Vika a LOT.

I turned off the TV after the mens final, completing forgetting that there was more to come. I am not sorry.

I hope Azza enjoyed that 2-0, 30-0 lead in the second set while it lasted.
This is still better than any match involving Isner.

Serena just saved eight BPs to hold for 2-4...that, one assumes, would be that, except they're both playing pretty badly.

So many empty seats??? Is it the same session as the men's final and people left?

So many empty seats??? Is it the same session as the men's final and people left? There's no atmosphere, and they barely root for Serena. Isner had way more support and his game is boring! I love Rafa, but Isner makes matches unwatchable. This is a much better final and yet there's no crowd despite the presence of Serena. That's so weird.

Azarenka was 4-2 40-30 up, then Serena won 3 straight games and served for the set at 5*-4. Now Azarenka won 2 games in a row and is 6-5* up. LOL

I think it's a pretty good match, actually. Sure, lots of errors, but some good points. Vika, minus the grunt, has actually not been a total b***ch for once.

Weird point at 5-4, silly dropshot by Williams, followed by a silly error with the whole court open. Then double fault at 5-5. Now it's 6-6.

If it was any other player, I'd have said that Serena choked. But that was a brilliant point from Vika to earn her 2nd match point, fantastic volley. That's why I like her, she fights and she is willing to go to the net occasionally.

Serena deserved to lose just for bringing that dog to the match, and dog's nanny, and because of the way her dog was dressed.

Yes, the 6-6 point was brilliant.
Really the only two good players on Tour if we're being honest. Hopefully the USO final will feature them as well, and I'd be fine with either Revenge or Confirmation.

That was a bad match that got weirder and better towards the end - Serena DFing at 5-5 in a TB? And that amazing Vika volley at 6-6! - but it was very significant IMO. Vika has proven herself a legit rival to Serena on hard courts now. And the overall rhythm of the match felt so much like the USO final - and Vika laid that ghost to rest...

Stadium almost ENTIRELY empty for the trophee ceremony. Wow.

Ugliest trophee ever? Serena probably saw it and decided to tank at the end.

Or was it the runner-up trophee that looked like a cheap Chinese vase?
Anyway, this win is huge. And I wouldn't be shocked if Serena loses to a Stosur at the US Open.

That's why I like her, she fights and she is willing to go to the net occasionally. I like her for that but mostly because she's not afraid of Serena. Yes, she flinched in the final last year but I don't think that had to do with it being *Serena* she was playing. Or if it did, she got over it, maybe just in looking back and seeing how close she had come. Actually it's ridiculous for me to comment on tennis at all -- I haven't seen a single match since Wimbledon.

If Serena fails to win the USO, is this a disappointing year for her?

Yeah...being undefeated except for 3 of 4 Slams and two Vika finals is not what she wants from her year. On the other hand, Serena seemed to centre her year around reclaiming RG, a real challenge for her, and she passed with flying colours. (I think her Wimbledon loss can partially be attributed to that: when she started playing passively in the third set, she was still in clay mode...) If it was any other player, I'd have said that Serena choked. But that was a brilliant point from Vika to earn her 2nd match point, fantastic volley. That's why I like her, she fights and she is willing to go to the net occasionally. I like her for that but mostly because she's not afraid of Serena. Yes, she flinched in the final last year but I don't think that had to do with it being *Serena* she was playing. Or if it did, she got over it, maybe just in looking back and seeing how close she had come. There were several moments yesterday where I thought, that's it, bye Vika. Getting outclassed so totally in set one. When Serena won that 13-deuce game to hold for 2-4 in the second set. When Serena broke back in the third set. Part of that was Serena uncharacteristically failing to carry on her own momentum but it's so impressive that Vika didn't fold, those tribulations made her raise her game rather than sink. Vika's ability to pose a challenge to Serena is limited to hard courts, I think, but it's a legit rivalry on them at least. Oddly, both Serena and Vika only have four losses each this year. Vika has three w/ds ( ) but she's been more dominant than it seems.

I missed this but I don't mind Vika winning Doha and Cincy as long as she loses the US Open to Serena.
