No maindraw WC for Oudin or TT? Oudin was the ALT WC - if three players pull out of the MD before qualies start, Riske gets in on her own ranking and I assume her WC will be reallocated to Oudin. Luckily this seems unlikely AND Oudin got a tough Q1 draw Townsend's record this year doesn't suggest she's ready for the MD...and she's landed in a very soft qualy section.

Ons! Ons!
I hope Peer qualifies. I always feel bad for the top qualy seed -- so close, and yet so far.
So sad Akgul's still out.

Give it up for Pemra Ozgen everyone - at the age of 27, after over a decade in the ITFs, she finally made her first 25K final and won it a few weeks ago in Woking. That put her into her first ever Slam qualies in the last week before the deadline. And now she's won her first ever Slam (Q) match over Kudryavtseva. Head in hands on court afterwards according to @unseededlooming, who's there Buyukakcay also won, so Turkish women go 2-0 on the first day. Elsewhere, top seed Peer lost to Pervak I guess another former top 50 player is a bad draw, though. No Slam MD debut for Pereira, who was thrashed by Vicky Duval.

Awww! So excited for Ozgen. Two Turks! Please let this become the Year of the Two Tennis Turks. And it's good to see that Diyas posted an authoritative win. Baltacha def. Oudann in the battle of the excessively wild carded. Min won the battle of the short-named over Lim. Nice win for young QWC Loeb, of J. Mac's academy. But poor Shahar. I feel terrible for her. And Ons lost. And Chichi Scholl was unable to hang on to her lead over the Screamin' Sharapova Slayer.

Heh, Oudin losing in first round of qualies. Hopefully Vandeweghe joins her. I'm not sure how Ons' ankle is...after she retired in Baku she said it might need surgery Can't believe Scholl even won a set off MLDB. Scholl's 2013 record is now 2-21. Peer vs Pervak sounds like a riot. Jane Lane's report at TF: www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=581825

Rampre won, woohoo! Never expected to see that. So did Nigina Abduraimova (UZB) Really? Rampre was playing Chang, who's won ONE match this year and hadn't played since RG. Obvious bet, IMO. Nice to win money on a Rampre win. Didn't expect Abduraimova to win, though - very pleased. Sanders, despite her silly name, is a rare young AUS who'd made progress outside of their weak 25Ks. Sad about Kumkhum - losing to slumping Foretz is really bad. Another chance for big points gone, what happened to the Luksika who was tearing it up in the first quarter? Heh, another big haul of points for Townsend...it's weird that she's done nothing in the pros all year except when she's drawn terrible CZEs at two big-point events. But that's a very soft section she's in, I really expect her to qualify. Surprised that Gavrilova beat Nadiya Kichenok - Daria seems to be a "step it up at the Slams" sort, she reached Q3 at RG despite sucking in the warm-ups. Very happy that Hibi beat Kiick, wish I'd seen it but I was out last night. A-Nasty in the next round is winnable as well. Also good to see a MNE win for Kovinic - PLEASE beat Fichman next!

From a poster on TF:
Mayo Hibi is the second coming of Justine. When she hit that backhand winner on match point I could almost hear the "Allez!"
Aaaahhhh I need to see her play

Ha! I'll be shocked if Hibi's another JH. But I was very happy she won the USO Playoff QWC, and then beat that Kiick kid. MLDB screeched her way through another round.

But congrats! I confess I'd be scared to bet on Petra. Remember all those 6-7 in the third choke losses? I've taken my custom to another one. I think I would have bet on 99% of the draw over Chang. BOOOOOO: Fichman beat Kovinic with what looks like a typically annoying Fichmanesque come-from-behind fighting win Hibi lost Vandeweghe and Rogowska both won Both Turks lost Diyas lost to MLDB despite being 3-0 up in the third set YAYYYYYY: Wow, Abduraimova won another match - this time Janie's wariness of Rampre proved correct, but I'm happy for Nigina. Now she MUST beat Vandeweghe! Tall Duan still in the running to make her Slam debut after the CTF cruelly snatched it away from her at Wim Another very emphatic win for Duval, and Townsend won too Paszek losing would ordinarily be a BOOOOOO, but tbh she should get down on her knees and be VERY grateful that she somehow eked out 40 points here.

Final Q round, potential debutantes bolded. Only two guaranteed.
Ksenia Pervak (KAZ) vs. (27) Casey Dellacqua (AUS) (2) Sharon Fichman (CAN) vs. Alexandra Panova (RUS) (3) Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) vs. Grace Min (USA) Victoria Duval (USA) vs. Tereza Mrdeza (CRO) Coco Vandeweghe (USA) vs. Nigina Abduraimova (UZB) Madison Brengle (USA) vs. (25) Ying-Ying Duan (CHN) (7) Kurumi Nara (JPN) vs. (30) Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT) Olivia Rogowska (AUS) vs. (18) Maria Joao Koehler (POR) Catalina Castano (COL) vs. (17) Vera Dushevina (RUS) (10) Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (CRO) vs. Sesil Karatantcheva (KAZ) Taylor Townsend (USA) vs. Chanel Simmonds (RSA) (12) Michelle Larcher De Brito (POR) vs. Elena Baltacha (GBR) (13) Anastasia Rodionova (AUS) vs. (20) Julia Glushko (ISR) Alison Van Uytvanck (BEL) vs. (21) Ajla Tomljanovic (CRO) Aleksandra Krunic (SRB) vs. Louisa Chirico (USA) Julia Cohen (USA) vs. (26) Camila Giorgi (ITA)
Some very underwhelming Q3 match-ups. Castano/Dushevina in 2013? And what is Cohen doing still here?
Goooooooo:
Pervak, Panova (PLEASE), Hlavackova, Duval, ABDURAIMOVA (PLEEEEEASE), Giant Duan, Nara, Koehler, La Douche, THUNDER (I like both but Sesil needs it more, I think), Townsend, Baltacha, A-Nasty, Van Uytvanck, little Krunic, Giorgi.

Oh my god, how epic does MLDB/Diyas sound. From Jane Lane at TF: So we come back in approximately the next century, Diyas wins two quick points on serve & they sit down again for a changeover at 41*. MLDB broke back & held for *55 and I honestly thought she was going to finish in two sets. Then things got weird.
Diyas held and we get into this marathon game on MLDB's serve at *56 in which she has multiple GPs. Finally on set point, Michelle hit a forehand long that was called good by the lineswoman. Engzell overruled to give Diyas the set. You guys, if I had cat-like reflexes or could see the future, I would've loved to have taken a video of the next 10 minutes. It was the greatest experience of my 19-year, 11 & 1/2 month life.
ACTUAL CONVERSATION:
Michelle: "You've gotta be freaking kidding me?!?!" Engzell: "She called it good but it's my call. Michelle, it's out like this. *gestures le space*" (I was sitting on Michelle's side of the court & saw it out so it was a great overrule. She actually had like three really good ones in the second set.) Michelle: "Well, then why didn't she call it?!" Engzell: "......I don't know." Michelle: "THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!!"
MLDB then proceeded to go into hysterics on the set break, without the actual tears. Those came later.
Having a child + the time off has seriously been good for Engzell because I've never seen her be so authoritative and take command of things AND ACTUALLY MAKE GOOD UMPIRING DECISIONS (that mess at RG with AMG not withstanding since it was like her third match back) like she did today & in Peer/Pervak. I mean, I guess crying children are nbd for her now so props for her. (It won't last so I'll give her credit while I can tbh.)
So the third set starts and now MLDB is just on the edge. I honestly thought she was going to lose it, like totally lose it. She got broken in the second game, broke a racket and got a code violation. She channeled her inner McEnroe (You cannot be serious, this is so stupid!) and Janowicz (How many times are you going to let this happen?) on every call she disagreed with.
Diyas held in a marathon, 10-minute game for 30* (in which Michelle cracked another racket but continued to use it because I guess she was still of sound mind to realize that a point penalty was awaiting her) and that's when Michelle started crying on the changeover as Diyas was getting a consult from the trainer.
I honestly have no idea how she got herself back into the match. Questioning every call (mostly ones that were inside the line because why not at this point), shaking her head, gesticulating and saying 'Oh my goodness' a lot, and other such behavior. I think Diyas got distracted by all of her histrionics, took her foot off the gas a little bit and kind of let Michelle back in. So, Michelle breaks back and is serving at 32* when she and Engzell go at it again off of an overruled serve.
Michelle: "Why do you wait so long to call it though?" Engzell: "Because I have to wait for the line umpire...that's his job."
Diyas' coach was on the opposite side of the court from me and you could see him getting nervous in the later stages. I guess he's experienced her choking a lot or something. I also don't know if these two have any history because they were fistpumping and celebrating each other's errors the whole time, barely looked at each other during the handshake. Michelle made like no eye contact with Engzell either. Diyas got tight and MLDB really seized her opportunity. Credit to her, but if she considers herself 'calmer than ever' now, yeah I don't really know what to say about that. I kept track & she screamed "Come on", "Vamos", "Let's go", "Forza", and "Davai" at various portions in the match.

Almost all of the Q spots in the MD are really good, btw. Stosur and I guess Wozniacki are the worst. But there are two Q v Q match-ups; the placements against Daniilidou, Vickery, Petrova, Scheepers and Cadantu are jackpots; and two will get Lisicki and Cirstea, who can hit themselves out of any match.

MLDB's "Oh my goodness"es. Why is she still so immature? Please lose now. And Alex, you just know those plum Q spots are going to go to Fichman, Vandeweghe, Dushevina and Cohen. They'll all win and they'll all be around for another whole year torturing us again in WTA events.

Glad to see Duval qualify, after failing to defend her US Girls' 18s title to earn a MDWC, which had to have stung.
But I watched part of her match today and it was depressing. Mrdeza, how did she win 2 matches here?? All she can do is hit error after error, and she can't take advantage AT ALL of Duval's sad slow-motion serve. Katrina Adams, who is courtside, actually said the Duval slowpoke serve is "painful to watch" -- and these commentators try very hard not to say negative things. But Chanda Rubin then added that she thinks the VD serve is WORSE than it was last year. No wonder she needed a WC just to get into qualies. I find it depressing because I really want this kid to succeed, after all the hard knocks her family has been through.

Bally won the first set. GO GO GO. I don't think she's the type to be intimidated by deBrito antics, but she's not the greatest player, either, so it's a crapshoot what will happen now. GO GO GO Bally
