Abanda lost 2 and 0 to Brengle in qualies...she's had a serious injury this year, I think? But that's not a good scoreline.
Pretty interesting draw, fast-court MMs are so rare.

Yes, they are, much to Alex Stevenson's dismay. She apparently hit 25 aces in a 3-hour, 3-tiebreak loss against scrub Mueller in Q1 here, a match that had no breaks of serve. FQR is very US-heavy: Brengle, Oudin, Coco, Min , Hsu. Others still alive: Coin, Sesil, Sadikovic.

What, Sesil beat Coco.

We're not in SoCal any more, which means Coco will be putting up the results she deserves until next July Sesil

USians dropping like flies today: not just Coco but Min, Hsu, and Brengle also out; in MDr1, Sanchez and Burdette are both in trouble right now. The revived Christina McHale did crush Paszek, though.

Ouch! Defending champion and top seed Flipkens was crushed in r1 by Hercog, 36 16 in 55 minutes.

Apparently, Larcher de Brito was up 5-1 40-0 up and lost the set 5-7. Oops! Have no idea if she also led in the first set, which she lost in a tb.

Flipkens was carrying some sort of injury over the summer, maybe still suffering from that?
Excellent to see Lucic-Baroni trash Fichman, 4 and 0. Unexpected but exactly how she (and everyone else) should be dealing with the likes of Fichman. Hopefully the latter's tenure in the top 100 is a brief one.
Ajla Tomljanovic began the year ranked 453 - with her R1 win over Sanchez she breaks the top 100. Fantastic comeback.

McHale d. Garcia 26 76 63. Garcia DFed on SP in the TB. This is the most quintessentially Garcian match ever.

I have no idea what's meant to be impressive about Eugenie Bouchard's game.
