Can't believe this 2-3 game is STILL going on in the Stosur match. Why can't Sam put this kid away?? So, finally she does break.

Why is Stosur so nervous? Why am I talking to myself again?

I can't understand this match at all! Not that Duval is so bad, aside from her serve, but come on. Sam, you won this whole thing a couple years ago, sheesh!

Holy crap! Shock! Duval takes the set! I wonder if that's her dad standing up over there in the stands. Remember he's a doctor, and was buried alive in that earthquake?

Duval's playing better and better, and poor Sam is so off -- but let's see if VD can keep it up when she has to try to serve out the match.

What a match, so tense now ... but Sammy holds for 4-5. Pressure's on you, Vicky! I just wish she could somehow manage to play her best & serve it out.
So I just read that the Dad's arm was paralyzed in that earthquake, and so I do think that's him standing over there.

Well, well, well. Vicky Duval, you've got game. I apologize for misreading you! Such consistent depth on the groundies. Such guts! So happy for Victoria & her family & for Haiti.

Here's her story again, in case anyone forgot it:
That Duval is a resilient and emotionally sturdy player should perhaps not be a surprise, given her life’s journey. At 7 years old in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, she and several cousins were held hostage by armed robbers in her aunt’s house before being freed.
“It was traumatizing, (but) worse things have happened to people,” Duval said. “I’m lucky I got out of it. I’ve kind of erased that all from my mind.”
Victoria’s parents, Jean-Maurice and Nadine Duval, both of whom are physicians, decided to move the family to Florida almost immediately, though her father kept up with his obstetrics/gynecology practice at a Port-au-Prince clinic and would shuttle back and forth. Then, on Jan. 12, 2010, the earthquake hit, and Jean-Maurice Duval was buried alive beneath the rubble of the family home. His legs broken and left arm shattered and seven busted ribs puncturing his lung, Jean-Maurice Duval somehow dug himself out, and ultimately was airlifted to a Fort Lauderdale hospital, thanks to the generosity of a family in the tennis club Victoria was competing with at the time.
Jean-Maurice suffered paralysis in his left arm, but he’d somehow survived, a miracle that his daughter has never lost sight of.

There were quite a few total smackdowns on the ATP side of things today.

Stosur lost to DUVAL? I'm...so happy. That Vicky won and Sam lost. Perfect, as you all say.
The more I think about it...Stosur does have a history of losing to players that on paper she should destroy (Sarita!). And we know Duval is a retriever who's beaten several way more powerful players. Such a great result though!

Sam was so awful; it was like watching Mauresmo in fright-mode. What was wonderful was watching Duval slowly loosen up and gain complete confidence in her shots, especially that forehand. I had no idea she could play like that! She also is able to <gasp> construct points intelligently, and best of all, to shrug off her chokey mistakes and move on. Wish I could have seen a little of Vickery's match, too, though probably all she needed to do was keep the ball in play against an overexcited Lucic.

Did you find a way to watch matches, Chloe? TSN sucked on day one, but has had decent coverage ever since. If it gets shoddy, I'll follow Lady's advice and use mediahint.

This commentator just reminded me that they're called the "J-Block", which is surely one of the worst things to ever happen in tennis.

Karlovic won, and gracefully jetted off court almost immediately so that Blake could cry and his fans could suck. He's retiring? I feel like I knew that and then forgot.

Karlovic did stay around a bit to throw balls at the crowd, which I thought was a bit weird given the context. Even more weird was the loud Karlovic fan. A Karlovic fan, really?

He looked like he was going to go until they handed him the balls.
I think there were three Karlovic fans. There would have been four, but Leena is afraid to fly.

True, our own LeeLee is a fan. I'm not sure if she really is a fan though or if she cheers for him for shit and giggles.
