In Doha, Murray lost to Mayer.

Blew a 6-3, 3-0 lead. Understandable rust considering the first tournament back from injury.

Five retirements/walkovers in Chennai so far?
I have no faith that Gulbis will hold on to this second set break lead over Rafa.

Aaaand broken back. Of course.

And eventual, inevitable loss. I forgot tennis was happening again. I should listen.

It's hard to get into the first week even though you've been hankering after it. A zillion tournaments in the wrong time zone over New Year's when everything's a bit weird anyway.

Exactly. Australia is basically another planet.

Who is Gojowczyk and how did Rafa lose a set to him?
I never knew that stat about Monfils only beating Rafa in Doha. That's the final, anyway.
In Sydney, ughhhhhh @ Hewitt beating Nishikori, please can Fed murder him in the final like in the good old days.

Gross, Hewitt's in a final. The good news is that he will obviously lose to Roger.

Nadal is about to pass Michael Chang on the matches won list. This is important, because Michael Chang is the worst. I'm very sure this is exactly how Jesus would have wanted it.

Speaking of mens tennis stats that nobody cares about, did we know that Davydenko has the highest finals winning % among active players, and 3rd all time? I guess this is why Leelee cals him King. Gilles Simon is second among active players, because this list is awesome.
Also, did we know that Davydenko has 21 titles? And Simon 11?! I only remember like, 5 of those, combined.

Same here. If that! Anyway, I like that stat. It's apparently a place where good but somewhat unimpressive player can shine.

I knew about the Davydenko finals one, it came up in some commentary thing a while ago. Maybe here last year, actually. And I remember that year Simon swept a million MMs like his name was Schnyder.
Nadal/Monfils was a pretty good match today. Some really inventive stuff from Gael to take the second set. Such a shame he just went away after missing those break back points in the third (and that stupid non-challenge at deuce when Rafa's shot was out).
The Chennai final is Wawrinka/Roger-Vasselin. I know nothing about the latter apart from his name.

I've returned just to post that I"m still laughing at this Hewitt df Federer result. I chuckled to myself over lunch at the cafe when I remembered it, and nobody thought I was crazy because they were also chuckling over it.

Hewitt will probably have a few gross results this year, assuming he stays healthy. We can enjoy knowing that he will always eventually lose in the important events to somebody who is actually good, and that he will not maintain this level consistently, because I said so.

It probably ~says something~ about the state of the ATP that the younger generation permits said results by Hewitt. They can't even kick him off the Tour completely, ugh

Thankfully, the next generation of Olds (Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, maybe somebody else), exist to prevent him from actually ever mattering at all again, even a little bit.

I think it has to be expected that past 'champions', or number 1, will randomly have a run or 2 like this. It's the opposite which would be odd; even if Hewitt's game has declined, he isn't old enough to have forgotten how to play tennis so he still has the ability to take advantage of some opponents playing like shit. You'll always have some players playing like shit every week regardless of the state of the tour, so I don't think it's indicative of anything. In this case, it certainly says a lot about Federer though.

WTF is up with Ferrer this season? Lost sets to Dolgopolov, Young and Garcia Lopez; lost matches to Brands and Lu. None of that is good.
