I don't know how to react to reading this shattering bit of news about Carlos... "Rodriguez, too, has been rewarded for his faith in, and loyalty to, Justine. “I was working with Dominique van Roost when I first met Justine,” recalled Rodriguez, whose first success as a coach had come when he helped the big-serving Dick Norman beat Stefan Edberg at Wimbledon in 1995."

I hope this will work: Justine at the Orange Bowl in 1996.

Ze Belgian press is saying that Justine is moving her official residence from Belgium to Monaco. Even though this is for obvious tax reasons, the word on the street is that her training base will be in Monaco, and no longer in Saddlebrook. Which begs the question of what happens to Etcheberry, and so on.

Very interesting! Who would she train with in Monaco? It's not like she'd be at a loss for practice partners, if the media guides are anything to go by

All I care about is that Justine doesn't die, and/or get injured anymore.
We can win RG, so easily.

Hi vaiva!!! Well, I guess i just lost interest in tennis a little bit. I did follow the Sania news the past few months, but other than that, I found I didn't really care. Maybe it will come back now that our girl Justine is back, faulty serve and all. Yay Juju and her fans!

Wouhou, she sounds optimistic. I don't know whether you knew this, but I thought before the match that even a close 3-set loss would be good. The only thing I don't like is that Eurosport said that Sharapova wasn't playing particularly well.

When it says "Justine va prendre deux jours de repos", is that some kind of rigid schedule she's sticking to: 48 hours of post-tournament rest, or is that a French expression that means something more vague, like our "a couple of days"? It sounds a little too strict the way it is, like "Justine will rest until 8:15 AM Thursday, when, following breakfast and a suitable post-prandial digestion period, she will work on her quadricep strength with Pat Etcheberry until 12:30 PM, at which time Pierre-Yves may approach her for a kiss on the cheek."

Janie, it looks as though it's more a case of a strict schedule -- French has no difficulty being vague and obtuse when required.

Thanks, Brinyi. I guess it does sound Justine-like to stick to a rigid schedule, after the year of health problems she's been through. I hope it helps her, this scheduling of regular rest periods. I also hope and expect that Kim's amazing run will inspire her, as usual in their bizarrely-parallel (and incredible) careers. Meanwhile, Justine loses 161 ranking points this week, because last year she struggled her way to the Amelia Island semis, despite being already sick. So she is losing more than she gained in Miami last week. But her ranking should nevertheless stay in the top 50 -- and nothing more to defend till the Olympics! Rise, Juju, rise!

from Justine's web site:
09/04/2005:
Justine’s clay seasons starts on Monday. From April 11 till April 17, she will take part in the Charleston tournament (South-Carolina, USA, Tier I).
Justine has left Saddlebrook where she trained on clay for one week. She’s heading for Charleston where the tournament "Family Circle Cup" starts on Monday. The surface is green clay, which is a little bit faster than the surface on Roland Garros.
In 2003, Justine beat Serena Williams, and put an end to her 21 consecutive victories. In 2004, a tired Justine withdrew from the tournament. A few days later, the doctors told her she contracted a nasty virus.
Charleston is only the second tournament this year for Justine, the first on clay, her favourite surface. "The clay season is probably my favourite time of the year, so I will try to enjoy it." Justine explained 10 days ago. "I hope I gain more confidence every match I play and that my game on clay improves too."
The draw consists of 56 players, the 8 seeded players have a bye in the first round. Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva, Anastasia Myskina and Venus Williams (title defender) are probably the first four seeded players. Justine, who is currently ranked 34, is not a seeded player. She will play her first match on Monday or Tuesday.

Being unseeded, Justine could have faced anyone at all in the first round at the FCC. In fact she did draw a seed, #10 Jelena Jankovic. Watch out for her wicked down-the-line forehands and backhands, Juju! But if she can get through this one, she's lucky to be in slumping Vera Z's section (seeded 6th). She's in #1 seed Lindsay's quarter. A good challenge all around for Justine this week.

What a stimulating dialogue going on here the last few days between so many Juju fans! Justine's new rank is not too bad: 43. She's in a great spot, right between board faves Na Li and Dally Randriantefy! Justine plays Jankovic today, third match up on the main court. The first match is at 10, so it should be sometime early-to-mid afternoon ET. ALLEZ!!!

So fragile that she lost the first set 57, apparently after blowing a lead of 41 - at least so say the inmates @ wtaworld - bad sign (good sign for Weird Al, though, I guess)
