I hope she really will play those ... I have learned not to get my hopes up when it comes to Mary actually playing, but maybe her Wimby success will help her turn the corner ... again ...

For the rest of 2003 Mary pretty much has no points to defend, since after Wimbledon last yearshe didn't win match. So if Pierce can stay healthy and play as well as she did at the "Big W" then I like her chances to make Top 30 by the end of the year.

from cnnsi:
Pierce, 34, working toward comeback
Nearly three years after she ruptured her left anterior cruciate ligament, two-time Grand Slam singles champion Mary Pierce is pursuing a high-intensity daily workout regimen in the hopes of returning to professional tennis. Pierce, now 34, was chasing down a forehand from Vera Zvonareva when she suffered the knee injury at the Generali Ladies Linz tournament in Austria in October 2006. Pierce underwent surgery three months later, but it wasn't until this January that she began pursuing her comeback in earnest. She's been working out at Bollettieri's in Bradenton, Fla., under the guidance of Yutaka Nakamura, the academy's director of tennis performance.

She probably could come back. She's one of the purest ball strikers the game has seen. She doesn't exactly move around the court very much, which is where age really catches up to you. Top 10? No. But could she take out some of the top players on her on days? Absolutely - and I think at this stage, that's probably what she's looking for.

Agreed. Mary has the type of game where she could play into her 40s. But, with her injury history, it's unlikely she lasts long.

So, I randomly thought about this today, and decided to open the question to the forum: what was the deal with Pierce's Asian fan base? Why were they so drawn to her? In the old days of WTAW, I'd have to say about half of her fans were Asian. She had the glam image going for a while, but other than that, I don't see the appeal to that group. Am I missing something?
