There's no really good reason to group Angie, Wynne and Sania in the same thread, except "because I can". The word on the street is that A.Widjaja and W.Prakusya are about to swing into action after lengthy injury layoffs. Angie is expected to play the Dinan $75K in early April, as is Sania. Wynne is expected to play the $25,000 in SUPHANBURI, THA, the week of Mar. 28.

Wilawan Choptang is my favorite.
If she still plays.

Veteran Romana returns ready to silence the skeptics
Musthofid, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
Romana Tedjakusuma knows all too well the sniping surrounding her selection as a reserve for the Fed Cup tie against Germany next month.
If she is eventually called up to play, she will not only have to beat the Germans on home soil, but also silence those who say she is too old and lacking match play to represent Indonesia.
Romana, who turns 29 in July, has resided in California since the 2001 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. The trip to Essen in April will be her seventh cap for Indonesia since 1992.
During a team training session in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, Romana said she was eager to play again, but she also seemed distracted by the questioning of her suitability for the team.
Initially wary in answering The Jakarta Post's questions, she said she was doing her best to ignore the doubters.
"I was informed about Indonesia's next match against Germany early this year and I was asked whether I was ready for another round of national service."
She said chairwoman of the Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) Martina Wijaya and nonplaying captain Suzanna Anggarkusuma called her to ask about her playing condition and availability for the team.
"I told them the truth concerning my condition. I said I had been able to maintain my tennis fitness. If I hadn't, why would I answer otherwise? I keep training and playing in many tournaments. Although they're not WTA ranking points tournaments, they are competitive events.
"I enjoy the game of tennis. I relish the challenge of competition."
The expected starters for the team are Angelique Widjaja, whose fitness is still in doubt due to a knee injury, Wynne Prakusya and Cup debutante Ayu Fani Damayanti.
Romana made her own debut in 1992, recruited as much needed support for then number one Yayuk Basuki.
With her ranking rising to the low 80s on the WTA Tour, she accrued five Fed Cup wins the following year as Indonesia overcame Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore and Poland, before losing to Spain in the second round of the World Group.
She kept her place on the team until 1996, when she decided to concentrate on her studies at Nicholls State University in Louisiana, graduating in 2000 after a successful collegiate playing career.
In her last match in the Fed Cup in 2001, her only win came by default over Barbara Schett in a 2-3 defeat to Austria.
In the SEA Games, she contributed two gold medals for Indonesia. But a chronic injury of her left wrist forced her to retire from the tour.
She has since resided in Tracy, California, with her parents, working a instructor at a tennis club in nearby Pleasanton, Romana said she continued to train and played the northern California club circuit.
"There are a lot of tournaments. I played around 10 tournaments last year. I can't play more because of my commitment to the club," she said, not mentioning that she won eight events.
For Romana, who will leave for Croatia on Thursday with Wynne, the German trip could be her last stint of "national service".
Whatever the future holds, she plans to fight in Essen.
"Against the Germans, we will have to take our chances. When we are already committed to play, we must fight."

Angie still in doubt for Fed Cup tie Sports News - March 30, 2005 Musthofid, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta The tough proposition of facing Germany in a World Group II Fed Cup tie could become a mission impossible for the national women's tennis team if Angelique "Angie" Widjaja is ruled out by a nagging knee injury. Indonesia would relish the opportunity to avenge its defeat from the same stage last year when the teams meet on April 23-24 in Essen, but any realistic hope of winning rests on number one Angie recovering in time for the tie. The Germans will have the home court advantage of playing on slow European red clay, with veteran Barbara Rittner and up-and-coming Anna-Lena Groenefeld providing tough opposition. "We'll see in the next two weeks how Angie is shaping up with her knee. We have a doctor to consult about her condition," Angie's coach Deddy Tedjamukti said after putting his charge through a light workout on the clay courts in the Senayan complex, Central Jakarta. Angie had surgery on her left knee in Australia last November after a quarterfinal loss at the Wismilak International in Bali, a tournament she won in 2001. The former Wimbledon and French Open junior champion, who has not trained since January, tried out various shots on Tuesday, watched intently by team captain Suzanna Anggarkusuma and manager Virginia Rusli. Appearing cautious about putting too much weight on her suspect knee, the 20 year old practiced her serve seated in a chair. "It is only 30 percent of her power. We don't want to push her to the limit because we fear that would damage the knee instead," Deddy said. "She is still hurting during movement. She struggles to reach a far ball. We are simply looking for Angie to regain her reflexes. Tennis is a game of reflex shots and we are trying to speed up that area." Deddy said that Angie's progress would be evaluated over the weekend but he refused to confirm if it would decide whether she could go to Germany. "We leave it to Angie to decide. If she feels OK she goes, otherwise she should by no means force herself to play." Angie, whose ranking has slumped to a low of 170, was circumspect about her chances of playing. "It's still hurting me at times. I can't say as yet whether I'm ready for Germany. Let's see how my progress in two weeks." Indonesia earned a berth against Germany by defeating Slovenia 4-1 in a playoff in Jakarta last July. Although the Indonesian team's lineup has yet to be confirmed, Wynne Prakusya is likely to retain her position at second singles, with veteran Romana Tedjasukmana being called up for the first time since 2001. "We have included Romana as a reserve player," Suzanna said. "We are very hopeful that Angie can go along with us." Suzanna will accompany Wynne and 29-year-old Romana, who won two golds at the 2001 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in her last outing for Indonesia, to Croatia on Thursday to take part in a satellite tournament, before heading to Germany.

"Imran Mirza tells me that Sania Mirza withdrew from the Dinan challenger next week only as a precautionary thing, as she felt she could use a bit more rest to make sure that she won't be playing too much as the ankle slowly heals. It is good to be careful in these things .. That would give her a good break of at least 3-4 weeks, which is sorely needed before the Fed Cup and all that .. Hopefully she will be physically 100% by then, but one week at a time right now! .. Also, she needs to get the ankle taken care of, before she can do serious training - it has been a while since she has been able to do serious lower body training either because of that .. Good plan, I say!"

Sania unlikely for Fed Cup
PTI | April 11, 2005 | 14:20 IST
Teen star Sania Mirza is unlikely to play in the Fed Cup women's tennis tournament beginning in New Delhi next week as the World No. 75 is still recuperating from an ankle injury.
The Hyderabad star, who last played in a WTA tournament in Florida in March, will definitely travel to Delhi where she will consult doctors and get their advice before taking a final decision.
Sania, who has not taken the racquet for the last three weeks since her first round defeat in Florida, has been advised rest by doctors till she gets fully fit.
Doctors have now detected some fluid accumulation in her left ankle. It was first found in USA by the tournament doctor in Miami and was later confirmed by experts in Hyderabad.
"I have my doubts but she is definitely coming to Delhi and if fit she will play. It all depends on the doctors' advice," her father Imran Mirza told over phone from Hyderabad.
Sania might have a check up in the capital on April 17 to assess her fitness before the start of the tournament.
India is in Group 1 of the Asia Oceania Fed Cup along with seven other nations. The top two teams from the group will advance to the play-off round to fight for a place in the World Group. Group I matches are scheduled to begin on April 20.
What seemed like a minor injury which Sania first suffered during practice in Australia two weeks before the start of the year's first Grand Slam in January continued to trouble her all through as he repeatedly hurt the ankle while playing in the circuit.
Sania, who got a wild card to play in the Australian Open, carried on with her injury to win two rounds before losing to eventual winner Serena Williams. Next was the Hyderabad Open which saw Sania winning her first WTA Tour title.
The unbelievable string of victories continued at the Dubai Open where she ousted US Open Champion Svetlena Kuznetsova before bowing out in the next round.

Sania is now saying that she is hoping to be ready for Fed Cup. The latest from the ankle watch, acc. to the Hindustan Times: Dad Imran Mirza was quick to add that Sania has not touched a tennis racquet now in almost four weeks. “She still has oedema (swelling) in the left ankle and was put on a cast. It is off now, but Dr Reddy has to see it again. If she continues playing without it (ankle) being fully treated, it can become worse is the advice the doctor gave us,” said Imran.

Sania Mirza ruled out of Fed Cup
Wednesday, 20 April , 2005, 01:06 New Delhi: India’s Fed Cup hopes on Tuesday suffered a huge blow when their number one player Sania Mirza failed to recover from an ankle injury that has kept her off the tennis courts for the past four weeks. Sania, world no. 75, would not return to action for at least another two weeks after her doctor in Hyderabad advised further rest.
"The doctor has said that the left ankle has shown progress, but he would need another 10-12 days to decide whether she can play," Sania’s father Imran Mirza said.
Sania, who underwent detailed investigations, was detected with a tissue injury.

Wynne got blown out in both singles, but she did win the doubles dead rubber. The important thing is that she still looks pretty, isn't it? Because she does. This seems to be a kind of, er, QUIET thread ... But! When Sania returns to continue her Inexorable March to the Top 30, I know this place will be hoppin'!

Yes, she is pretty. Her Dad has a problem with tennis' short skirt thing. I think this issue keeps a lot of potential Asian and Middle Eastern players, I guess especially Muslims, out of the game; at least I read an Indian article to that effect. But I don't see why players who have issues with the bare-leg thing can't come up with some reasonable alternative to play in? There is no short-skirt rule that I know of. With these modern fabrics, why not try out different modest options, to see what works without hampering movement or killing from trapped heat? Maybe then we could even get the odd Amish girl out there!
