I know, I know. She's no "Indian Mo Connolly", as I used to love to trumpet.

I know, I know. She's no "Indian Mo Connolly", as I used to love to trumpet. No, but what she's been able to do given her background in a country where the summum of women's tennis was Nirupama Vaidyanathan is exemplary.

Probably no one would care about that if she wasn't so danged gorgeous.
I like her, though. Not her game, but her. She's willing to say and do trailblazing things for an Indian woman, in the face of heavy opprobrium. She may never reach the top 10, but she's already like Indian women's own Muhammad “I ain't got nothin' against them Viet Cong" Ali.

With the Prakusya era sadly ending, it's time to get to know Indonesia's other players. Here's their #2 player, Sandy Gumulya:

Okay, sorry, the pic is 2 years old, and Sandy seems to have been feeling a little nauseous that day! Anyway, she's 20 years old now, and has reached her highest-ever ranking, #293. The WTA site lists these 2006 highlights: MARCH - Won singles title at $10K ITF/New Delhi 2-IND. SEPTEMBER - Reached 2r at Bali (l. to No.8 seed Bremond 63 76(6)). OCTOBER - Won second ITF Circuit singles title of year (fifth of career) at $10K ITF/Jakarta 3-INA.

This was surely a thrill. It's not like hitting with Pratt or Craybas --Yayuk was biiiiiiiiiig in Indonesia and I am sure is still fondly remembered.

A kid named Grace Sari Ysidora won both the U14s and the U16s in Indonesia's National Championships a couple weeks ago. One of the players she beat in the 16s was Beatrice the Lesser Gumulya.
So is Grace the next big hope for Indonesian tennis? Here's what Shine on Silver Moon said at wtaworld on March 12th:
"Grace used to be coached by Meiske Wiguna (former coach of Angie since 4 yo) and in the last 10 months, Grace is trained with Alfred Raturandang on week-end basis. Grace is still a raw material...many things to be improved. After 2 weeks in National Selection, her physical fitness was bad...she lost to Jogasuria. Do not expect too much on her in KL this week of March 12. If she can reach QF, fine with me."
So now I have to figure out what this KL is ...

Ah! I see Sandy's been doing okay recently. She's at her career-high ranking: 262. So there are 3 Indonesians ranked between 200 and 300 now. But none higher than that -- Angie, make your move!

"Do not expect too much on her"
Ha, even as an Indon fan newbie, I recognize that's the standard Indon attitude. I think they all study that classic motivational book, The Power of Negative Thinking".

english.vietnamnet.vn/interna...007/03/676398/Indonesia faces expulsion from Tennis Federation 19:32' 22/03/2007 (GMT+7) Indonesia's refusal to play Israel in the Fed Cup tie last year could risk expulsion by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) if it fails to pay the fine, local press said Thursday. Indonesia faces 29,100 U.S. dollars ITF fine for the refusal and is given deadline until April 5, reported the English daily The Jakarta Post. Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) chairwoman Martina Widjaja has warned that the amount is "simply beyond the association's capability."
"If we fail to pay the fine, we could be expelled from the ITF and no longer be able to play in the Fed Cup, Davis Cup or other international and multi-sports events sanctioned by the ITF," she was quoted as saying. Indonesia pulled out from the competition in Israel last year under instruction from the Foreign Affairs Ministry in protest over Israel's heightened military actions in the Gaza Strip, the newspaper said. Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, has no diplomatic ties with Israel.
