“The French Open is memorable for dusty, absorbing, exhaustive rallies, as players battle the slippery footing and employ chess-like strategies to win a point. It is, in the words of tennis chronicler Rex Bellamy, 'the great but cruel championship,' an unforgiving test of physical and mental stamina.”

Q. Your breakthrough at Wimbledon last year was extraordinary. You're coming back again. Do you have a freshness? Do you feel a freshness and eagerness right now? Do you feel some kind of fatigue in a way?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I shouldn't be fatigued. I should be pretty fresh compared to some other players.
It's like my fifth week in Europe. Definitely making sure I'm doing the right thing to stay fresh mentally, for sure, coming into the French Open. This is definitely a tournament where you have to be fighting and grinding every point.
But I feel pretty fresh, yeah.

"My back feels really tight and tired," Murray said afterwards. "There was no strength there. When I was moving wide I just couldn't do it. I felt as though my back was going to collapse all the time." - the little bugger talks as if he is a geezer already!

If Gasquet wasn't fatigued in that sorry 0-6 4th set yesterday, I hope he has some better explanation! Oh, that's right; it WAS humid out there ...

It's fascinating the way Mopey rose from his near-deathbed of fatigue and horrendous back injury to win in doubles today. And there I was, feeling sorry for him for a moment. Never again, Scotsmope!

here's Andy's overly wordy explanation:
MURRAY NOT WORRIED BY DOUBLES
Andy Murray is confident playing doubles will not aggravate his back problems after progressing to the French Open's second round along with team-mate James Auckland today.
The 19-year-old rising British talent bowed out from the singles draw on Monday after his a five-set battle against French youngster Gael Monfils and complained about lower back problems after the match.
He surprisingly decided to play the doubles with Auckland after all, and both men today beat Australian pair Ashley Fischer and Jordan Kerr 6-2 6-4.
"I have always wanted to play doubles especially in a big tournament," said Murray after the win.
"It allows me to work on my volley and on my movement.
"It's good to play with James because I don't feel too much pressure playing with him."
Murray admitted his decision to play despite his back was hard to take but he is confident about his choice.
Both men's clash was due to take place yesterday before being postponed a day because of the bad weather conditions.
"It was a tough decision whether or not to play," Murray added.
"I had to think about it but it would not have been fair for James if I didn't play.
"It's good that we did not have to play yesterday, we did some practice.
"I still have to be careful obviously. It's not going to go away after two days. I will need two to three weeks to recover.
"And if I had to play a singles match tomorrow I would not do it."
The British pair will take on USA's twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan on Friday.
Murray added: "My serve is the only shot I can control but on the smash and stuff I have to be really careful.
"I know that by playing the doubles my back is not going to get much worse than that by playing on half a court."

Q. Over eight hours in the last two matches, yet you still looked very fresh in the final set today. But if you have to go another long match on Wednesday, could your legs become an issue?
RAFAEL NADAL: Maybe I going to be better on Wednesday than today, no? Yeah, I think. Because today was tired, especially in some moments. I lost my concentration. I lost my concentration maybe because I am a little bit more tired than usually, no?
Q. Here (in the head)?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, because all these all go together. If you are tired legs, your mentally is difficult, too. All comes together. Maybe I feel a little bit tired. Sure, I lost my concentration for that in some moments, no?
...
Q. Hewitt had five double‑faults in the last set. Did you think he was getting tired?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know, no? Not for the tired (indiscernible) five double‑faults in the last set, no? But he had good chance in the third, and in the fourth he coming down a little bit. I don't know is for because he is tired. Because he won last match against Hrbaty easy. And today we play four sets, but not the toughest match in the history, no?
