And it's never! 1-6 3-6. Sad roar. Well, I hope she doesn't let this take the wind out of her comeback, but that's quite a thumping. That match wasn't much more than an hour, and I don't think Lindsay ever broke her? No break points.

That match wasn't much more than an hour, and I don't think Lindsay ever broke her? Lindsay never had a break point (!). That was pretty bad. Maria played quite well, but Lindsay was terrible in the first set. Middle of the court, middle of the court. Error. I'm not moving for that. Second set was better in patches, but not nearly good enough.

That was very reminiscent of her loss to Venus Williams, 2-6, 1-6, 2002 San Diego after her last really big layoff. She improved in the 2nd set on her serve and off the ground, but too much young gun power. Lindsay not quite ready for the elite. And unfortunately for her, I think the only way to get there soon is to step up her schedule and play more events. Which she's not going to do, and she really should. Her ranking come Wimbledon isn't going to get her a favorable draw. The serve isn't there like it used to be. The strokes are still there... but this up the middle of the court shit has to stop. She could do that against players she can straight up overpower and get away with it, but not here.

LOL. Shriek had a tougher time against Kostanic Tosic.

Just a few points from that one:
Maria played very well. Everything was working great, serve and footwork especially.
Lindsay's groundies need to be much sharper. Did she hit any backhand winners?
Her serve must improve, too. How many did she miss out wide on the deuce side? Geez.
Some high quality games in the second set from both.
Lindsay needs to stop playing these mickey mouse tournaments and mix it up with the big girls on a regular basis.

Oh and she's probably slower now than Seles was in, like, 02.

Lindsay needs to stop playing these mickey mouse tournaments and mix it up with the big girls on a regular basis. This is why she doesn't. She's going back to the Mickey Mouse tournaments next month in Memphis. She can beat everyone there... except probably Pee. She's not going to beat any big hitting top players with that game. I'm guessing she was playing better last fall than now?

Yeah, Leach was really, really slow. Actually, that's probably the slowest she's been since the 90s.

I'm guessing she was playing better last fall than now? This was the first match of her comeback I've seen. I expected much more off the serve and groundies. Meh, whatever. She knows what she's got to do, whether she'll put in the effort to do it or not is another thing. I can't think of many players who'd have done that much better against Maria tonight. It's not that bad.

Yes, Lindsay needs to do what she did in 2004. Lots of quick footwork drills to get her moving on the court again. So slow and flat-footed. I miss Robert Van't Hof. My feeling is that he could whip her back into shape. Still, I'm optimistic about what I saw in that second set. I feel like she could have been in it with a couple more points going her way. Pam said it will - this loss will help her realize what she has to do now for the rest of the year.

She did? Was that a ret. match at Stanford? Refresh my memory. In Miami, I think. Score was 6-0 ret. (bruised pride and knowledge that she did not belong on the same court as CAKE) I SAW IT LIVE! OH YEAH WOOT I think later that day on the same court was the awesome Marrero d. Haynes 7-6 7-6 where I heckled the entire crowd.

Well done to Maria. She has such a tough draw at the Australian Open it's hard to see her winning the title. But I hope this grand slam signifies Maria Sharapova is back to being the player she used to be. Dosvidanya.

It was Isner's fault.

It's not just the USians. Aussie announcers, Brits and Asians all talk about Kolya like this loser, who's been ranked at least 7th since RG 2005, is a fluke.

Just a few points from that one: Maria played very well. Everything was working great, serve and footwork especially. Footwork, yes. Throughout the match, Maria kept her knees well bent so that she could deal with the low bounce of Davenport's shots. She played very intelligently - was very patient, and relied more on keeping herself on the rallies longer than Davenport rather than going for too much too early. Her camp certainly did its homework.
