Huh. (Britney Spears.) Thanks for the clarification. Ivanovic is right there with Sharapova and has a good chance to win the match and title. I think the fact that Ivanovic has had tougher matches than Sharapova will help her tonight.

I can't believe that dropshot. And the horrendous wild miss in the next point. She better not be broken now.

6-3 3-0. That's more like it.
Now finish this quickly before the less important match finishes 5-7 0-6.

Maria made it look interesting for a couple of games.

Only reason it went to 5-all is Sharapova sucking badly for a while for no reason.

Just when I thought Ana may not blow anymore, she hits a lame dropshot up 5-4 30-0 on Maria's serve, and totally falls apart.
Oh well.

Only reason it went to 5-all is Sharapova sucking badly for a while for no reason. There were actually several reasons. One being she got shit scared of Ana's second serve returns, causing three doubles in that game.

When Ana screams and squeaks, it's cute. Everyone loves it.
When Maria screams and squeals after every winning point, and Yuri pops up on the big screen, everyone cringes. It's also disgustingly annoying and non-cute.

It's amazing how Ana can't do anything with her serve. She hits a big first serve, Sharapova manages to return it reasonably deep and Ana hits it half a meter out.

Esther broken. Homan on 'roids. She oiled her chair with an illegal substance. Ban!

I want to know how those wheelchair players hit those inverted backhand forehand things.
Sorry everyone. That match will be over soon. Then you can bitch about Ana losing in peace.

Sharapova won the first set 7-5 and it's 1-1 in the second set. Ivanovic is playing Maria very tough.

Sharapova is serving at 7-5 2-3. Ivanovic is in the match and might be able to grind Maria down in a long match. Ana is still in the match and could go on a hot streak at any time.

7-5 4-3. But, OMG, Maria might lose. Infact, she will. I think 5-7 6-4 6-3 because Ana is a fighter and really mean.

Oh well. Except for those couple of games in the first set it was a great performance by Sharapova. Her groundstrokes have got extremely good, it's a combination of power, depth and precision that's really hard to match. She came to Melbourne to win, plain and simple, and she's been the best player by far in this tournament. I have no problem with her winning.
I don't really blame Ana for anything in this match, except for a few lousy points when she was close to winning the first set. She just can't beat Maria when she's playing this well.

It wasn't terrible, except Ana won like two points against serve outside the game she broke.

Congratulations to Maria Sharapova on winning her third career grand slam singles title. Masha played solid tennis to defeat a determined Ana Ivanovic 7-5 6-3. Sharapova is now 3/4 of the way to the very rare career grand slam. I'm surprised that Masha has shown such fine form to start 2008 after having serious right shoulder problems in 2007. If Maria stays healthy this year she could have a great year. And well done to Ana on making the finals and improving so much in the last year.

That was actually sort of a good match. Sharapova played spectacular tennis all fortnight. Good for her. Well said. Maria had a great tournament winning all her matches in straight sets. And Ivanovic has improved so much in the last year and is developing into a top player and one of the most likable players in women's tennis.

Bummer for Ana. Not much for me to say tonight. Congrats Maria, she was the better and much more consistent player.

Also, who is this Esther character? A junior gal or a wheelchair star? She's the world champion in wheelchair tennis. Just pick up any GS tournament film and in the roll of champions, she's always collecting the trophy. She OWNS wheelchair tennis.

I fell asleep after the first set and when I woke up they were posing with their trophies. Also, I did manage to catch Pat Rafter's induction into the Aussie Tennis HoF. What a cool guy. Or as Geoff Pollard said "nice bloke".
