Here's our favorite Gangly Sjeng moving in for the kill ;D Tennis player Sjeng Schalken of The Netherlands, returns with a backhand to Tommy Robredo of Spain, during the quarter-final of the Ordina Open tennis tournament in Rosmalen, The Netherlands, Friday June 20, 2003. Unless I'm mistaken, we now have the first repeat final since Henman and Hewitt at Queens last year - tellingly, both of them are grass-court tournaments, where the number of genuine contenders is far smaller than other surfaces.
Schalken is through to the final, beating Sluiter 3 and 4, and Clement won over Vacek by the same score. I don't want to alarm any Clement fans out there, but Schalken does have a substantial 6-2 head-to-head record against him and won three of their four matches last year, including the final at Rosmalen, but the last two were both tough three-setters.

I have a feeling that Clement will take an early lead and come agonizingly close to the title, but Schalken will eventually pull through with his mental toughness. Or who knows, i could be full of shit. ;D

Looks like I was full of shit, after all. Schalken won comfortably: 6-3, 6-4. A win for one of our star nobodies! ;D

At least 1 fourt round match at Wimbly will be the match of nobodies -- Sjeng Schalken vs Rainer Schuettler Congrats to both for winning through to meet. I'd love to see that match but no chance of that with the Andy Roddick Scouting Train

Schalken suffers injury scare Schalken fears his foot could be broken Sjeng Schalken is doubtful for his Wimbledon quarter-final clash with Roger Federer after suffering a recurrence of a long-standing foot injury. Schalken was hampered by the problem during his straight-sets win over Rainer Schuettler on Monday. And the injury flared up overnight to jeopardise the Dutchman's hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the first time in his career. He will have an MRI scan on Tuesday evening to determine whether he has a broken bone in his foot. "I only slept for five or six hours last night because of the pain," said Schalken. "But I am determined to show up and I only won't play if I am in plaster." Federer also has injury concerns after pulling a back muscle during the warm-up before his straight-sets win over Feliciano Lopez. The Swiss fourth seed admitted that he played through the pain and is expected to have intensive physiotherapy on Tuesday. **** Poor Sjeng, I am rooting for Roger in this one but I hope his foot is not broken, would be such a shame.

If Sjeng Schalken isn't the ultimate, best-looking ATP nobody, I don't know who is. Plus I met him in Montreal this year twice and he was sooo nice. Then I met his fiancee who (much to my disappointment) was supernice as well. I'd say Sjeng is a better player than lots of casual fans give him credit for. I would also give my nobodies votes to Verkerk and Mirnyi.

If Sjeng Schalken isn't the ultimate, best-looking ATP nobody, I don't know who is. Oh, I don't know.... I think that a certain Radek Stepanek could give him a run for his money in the "total sex" department

Woohoo, Feli beat Mark 6-3 in the 3rd (sorry Mark's fans). I think Feli now has a great chance of getting into the DC team, he might even get a chance to play the single rubber.

Thank goodness I have stumbled onto this thread for nobodies, this is right up my alley.
Yes, unfortunately Mantilla is a nobody, this is not the man who gets mobbed by fans or even spoken about by anyone, he is almost the forgotten Spaniard.
My list of nobodies include some previously mentioned and more:
Mantilla Koubek Vinciguerra Di Pasquale Calleri Vicente Rosset Andreev Gaudio and the great Yves Allegro

Here is some information about Igor Andreev if people don't know that much about him.
He is from Moscow, he went to Spain as a youngster just like Safin. I am not sure if he trained with Mensua as well. I think he did I am not sure.
He speaks Russian, Spanish and English fluently and had an excellent record in the challengers and beat Davydenko and Schalken last year on the main tour. Plus he had a quarter final finish in Chennai recently.

Feli maybe the most good looking guy in the tour. But he definitely has one of the least flattering facial expression when he hit the ball.

Feli maybe the most good looking guy in the tour. But he definitely has one of the least flattering facial expression when he hit the ball. Maybe we have to move some of these "nobodies" out of here and into their own thread... Feli is a guy who still has to win a title... actually, even make a final first... ...and Tommy R has to win another title... he must be getting really frustrated w his draws... always Rogi or Pandy in his way, poor guy...

...and Tommy R has to win another title... he must be getting really frustrated w his draws... always Rogi or Pandy in his way, poor guy... He should be frustrated with his game, not the draw. Only if he can put it together just once to beat his foes.

You're right, Vera, it's not the draw, it's the player... Does this look like Feli? Well, he's meeting Rogi in the Dubai final tomorrow... they will look alike!! elmundodeporte.elmundo.es/

Feli's playing well this week! He beat Youzhny in 3 to meet Rogi in the final!! Lopez: "It was a really close match. I played really well at the beginning, then in the second set he was serving so well I couldn't find a way to break him and then he broke me at 4-5. In the third set, it was 50/50 of who would win until 4-4, I broke and then held my serve." (First ATP final) "I'm so happy. This is my first ATP final and it's at a very big tournament here in Dubai. It's not a small tournament so when you win matches you get so many points and you go up in the rankings and that's the most important thing." (Bad start to the year) "I played the Davis Cup final in December and then went back home to Spain. However, I did not have time to really prepare for January. In February I played Davis Cup and then took three weeks off with no tournaments, just practicing and training hard, that's why I play good now." (Playing Federer in the final) "I played Roger twice last year. When we played in Wimbledon, I played really good, but he was playing unbelievable at the time. Then we played in Madrid (indoors), I was really close to winning. I had 64 44 and 0-40 on his serve and then got out of it and I lost my opportunity. It's not easy to play against Roger, he's the best player in the world. I told everybody two years ago that he would become number one. I just have to go on court and do the best I can and to put him in trouble. If he plays good everybody knows he will be difficult. Federer: (Against Lopez) "It's going to be a different match because he (Lopez) plays with a one-handed backhand so he's going to slice his backhand more and this will change the whole tactic of the game. I've never lost to him on the Tour but I'm looking forward to a difficult one, because he must be very confident." Should be good...

Geez Kiwi, why can't you just win one . Oh well, did well enough to get into the final 2 weeks in a roll. Keep it up, get back to your old form. And Feli, good try. I wasn't betting my farm that he would win a title in his first try in a final, facing world #1 no less. I'm glad that he at least get a set out of Rogi, so it's not a total bust. Well done, Feli. Get the next one. Of course, should also congratulate the Mr Nobody of them all, Spadea. Way to go, Vince, make sure you play at the same level in the 2 TMS.

Feli got a set off Rogi in Madrid... he is one tough customer for Rogi, being a left. I guess Rogi was not awake or just feeling out Feli in the first... good thing I wasn't around for the first set... As for Vince, good for him winning his first title... never too late! He deserves it cos he upset Pandy! Kiwi, he's lost a few finals lately... incl Halle last yr vs. Rogi and Halle in 2002 vs. Kafel... he's like Juanqui... it's tough out there! Feli can win his first title next time, when he doesn't have Rogi in his draw! Verdasco also doing well... so 3 young Spaniards in finals this year but losing... that's a start anyway!
