Guga apparently had treatment for his neck yesterday, which became quite painful during the Armando match and got worse and worse, he said.

Jean-Julien Rojer explains why he didn't play DC vs Brazil:
"I had just played 5 weeks in Europe, and had one left to play in Hungary. I had to listen to my body, which needed rest. It was a shame I couldn't play for my country, especially since my teammates told me it was a fantastic atmosphere. Hopefully I can play next time."
Brinyi responds:
"Wimp! Wuss!"

The word is that Guga's retirement was related to the neck. He is next scheduled to play in New Haven.

According to UOL, Guga is back in Brazil and had his neck examined. It was determined that the pain is caused by an inflamed ligament in his vertebral column. The doctor assures us that it is not serious and has nothing to do with his hip problem. Muscular problems are apparently common when an athlete is returning to competition. He should be able to play New Haven and the USO as planned.

Thanks for the news, Brinyi! I hope he has some good hard court results in US. Yes, me too. His ranking will apparently be around 340 on Monday.

Most of my players are out of top 100 now so I don't even bother with their rankings these days.

esporte.uol.com.br/reportagens/especial_113.jhtmIt looks like Guga has put together quite a team to work with him in muscular re-education and recovering his range of movement. The article goes into quite a bit of detail of what the tam (doctor, physical trainer, Gumy and my dear Mariângela ) are doing.

The ranking is now 352. /me still cares. Obviously he didn't go to New Haven. It was the inflamed nerve, that is bothering his service motion. He will make a decision about the USO by Wednesday.

:red: I'm burying my head in the sand. I don't want to check his ranking. I try very hard not to think whether he'll play USO, etc, etc, etc.

Well, he's in the draw, and will play Goldstein in the first round. He will also be part of the Arthur Ashe Day dealie -- nice to know they didn't forget him. Apparently today he worked out with Gumy and played sets with Juan Mónaco and Snotso Tipsarevic.

Darn! Now I have to watch Arthur Ashe Day! But it will be worth the suffering if I get to see Guga.

There's a pic on USO official site of him practicing with Coria. And someone took a pair of scissors and cut off the right sleeve of his shirt, without any finesse at all.
