He's the poster you know most here. Most of us here seldom post in Gaudio thread other than Rogifan and she use the same screen name. That's a very good analysis, and it's highly amusing that how GWH's avatar of myself and zet is causing a few questions to be asked. Gaston won the car and now doesn't have to 'steal" the Mercedes in Stuttgart.

That's just the way they are. It helps them feel busy... Gaston won the car and now doesn't have to 'steal" the Mercedes in Stuttgart. I'm sure I have already read that somewhere...but where can it be? ;)and who can have said such a thing?

Good news! After his saying many times he'd like to go back into the Argentine DC team, Gaston will finally see his wish granted. That's the translation made by Jazz Girl from the Clarin article.
The country house in Nordelta, a little city inside Tigre in constant development, was the scenary. A quiet zone, an ideal night: almost 20°C, not too cold, not too hot. The clasic asado couldn't be missing. Taking advantage of the preseason and in strict secret, yesterday was made, the much needed gathering between the players and the captain, Alberto Mancini, to check the schedules, unify thoughts and discuss things related to the Davis Cup, so it will be a priority in 2005. The gathering was full: except the national N°1, Guillermo Coria, absent (he gathered with Luli during his staying in Argentina, almost a month ago, and promised that "you can count on me even if I'm not among the chosen players), there were the top 100 and even more, from David Nalbandian and Gastón Gaudio till Mariano Puerta. Among the doubles players, there weren't missing Gastón Etlis, Lucas Arnold and Mariano Hood. Mancini had told Olé in October, knowing that Czech Republic would be the first round rival, that he thought to get together the kids. "My dream is that Argentina will be like France or Spain", he wished. This gathering didn't have any past reference in the brief history of our national tennis and it was an example, to put together positions, given the characteristic individualism of this sport, to avoid confusions and misunderstandings. The good relationship between Mancini and the players was the key: they chose him, with Martín Jaite, as a captain, because of the unhappiness of some with Gustavo Luza. "If we put him, we should accept any decision", had said Juan Ignacio Chela in a recent interview. In the possibles determinations from Mancini that won't leave everybody happy, is the idea of rotating the team, taking notice of the different surfaces and the offer of players. For example, if he prefers Gaudio over Nalbandian in the singles against the Czechs (this newspaper already said that Luli's inicial idea is to build the first team with Coria, Nalbandian, Gaudio and Cañas), and then go to the Australian grass without calling Gaudio and calls Cañas for the singles. The teams will be confirming in 2005. Last night, the important thing was that a much bigger team got together.

Well the team is more important than any individual. They have a very hard draw this time around and they need the best team to suit the particular situation.
It will be funny seeing Coria cheering on Gaudio, that is if they will do that, but that is a good team, then again they can bring in others if there is an injury.

Well I'm surprised about the presence of Coria in the team. For all I knew, he had always said that the DC wasn't sthg which he was interested in. Plus if he has to cheer for Gaston, OMG, that would be some cult moment to tape... ;D

Gaston hasn't committed to the tournament in Buenos Aires at the moment. This is something I hope will change and he will get a Wildcard to the event.

Gaston hasn't committed to the tournament in Buenos Aires at the moment. This is something I hope will change and he will get a Wildcard to the event. Well I think he won't take part to the BA tournament. Coz he will be on his preparation for hard courts. And the BA tournament would oblige him to go back on clay between 2 hard courts tournaments. That wouldn't be a good idea I think. He has said he wanted to focus on his game on hard and try to improve so that wouldn't surprise me at all that it was the reason of his decision.

That wouldn't be a good idea I think. He has said he wanted to focus on his game on hard and try to improve so that wouldn't surprise me at all that it was the reason of his decision. I mean the BA tournament does need support and if the French Open champion comes back and plays there it will give it more impetus and the DC is at home afterwards so that wouldn't be a problem. If he doesn't want to play there afterwards then that wouldn't be so bad. Well I don't think he should play in Rotterdam. What would he gain from that? I mean if he is going to play a hardcourt even he should play in Dubai and not in Rotterdam.

Or he has another possibility. He makes BA and then after he makes Acapulco, that would be better for the DC coming right afterwards. He would be more confident. I had started dreaming about him taking part to Marseilles... ::)but it will remain a dream! Well as you'll see him at the AO, you'll have to ask him. We, poor fans, can't but speculate...

I would rather him play in BA, then train in Dubai and get prepared for that event. That is a very good hardcourt event and with a classy field and many of the top claycourt players have played there and had success that would be better.
Then again it depends how early he finishes at the AO, as to what will happen. I don't see him playing in Vina in 2005, so he should play at home and then in Dubai, the way he could play in Rotterdam is if he lost early in BA and that would be the only way.

Yes you're defo right. All will depend on how far he will go at the AO. I hope that his good experience at the Copa will help him believing in him. That's always what he is lacking. Self-confidence. I'm sure that some of his fans do believe in him sometimes stronger than he does...

It's just not a lack of self-belief from him. In some ways I wish he fought like Cañas, but that isn't his way, then again they play tennis in different ways as well.
There are some other issues when he is playing on hardcourts. In a way I hope he plays Roddick at Kooyong as I have the perfect tactical plan that could work for him against him.
He can't be too passive and if he's negative then the feet don't move well and he needs his movement and length to be on the money for him to do well.

Latest news, Gaston has won the Silver Olympia De Plata yesterday, which is an award attributed by Argentine sport journalists to the players of the year, according to them. He has been ahead of Coria ;D and of Paola Suarez. If you wanna read the whole article with the list of all the awarded happy sports men...check this out: www.clarin.com/diario/2004/12/23/deportes/d-08805.htmSorry but my notions of Spanish being what they are...you'll have to wait for sbdy else to translate!

How would you have him play to beat Roddick? Sounds interesting. I'm reading "Winning Ugly" and enjoying Brad's strategies. Reading how he beat Becker in 16's at USO, 1987, to get to the quarters...

None of his strategies worked against Lendl. It's quite obvious actually how to trouble Roddick, but the thing is they have to be good enough to do it.

Here's the translation of an article from Clarin about Gaston about to ask for a WC for the BA tournament. The translation has been made by Rosie. After six weeks of anticipation, the entry list for the ATP Buenos Aires tournament closed yesterday. The tournament starts on 7th February at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. With both of the higher ranked Argentines (David Nalbandian and Guillermo Coria) playing in the same week on the hard courts of Marseilles (Jean- Francois Caujolle, who was a player in Vilas' time and is now director of the French tournament, said that "it is an honour to have Coria and Nalbandian in our tournament"), the Argentine ATP list is headed by the Spaniard Carlos Moyá, a key player in this year's Davis Cup winning team and already a favourite here. Second seed will be Guillermo Canas, who has already told Olé that will not go to Vina del Mar the previous week to concentrate on his home tournament. So what has happened to Gastón Gaudio? The Roland Garros champion did not register yesterday, although his coach Franco Davin spoke to this newspaper last night and said, "Gastón is talking over details with Miguel Nest (President of the organising company Altenis) and I believe that everything is going to be OK". The organisation will today give an official conference with the official list. It is possible of course to remember that, although he has not entered on time, Gaudio can participate with a wild card invitation. In the list that closed yesterday, all the rest of the Argentines in the Top 100 were present - namely Chela, Zabaleta, Calleri, Monaco and Acasuso. Also present were the Olympic champions Nicolas Massú, and Fernando González, the Peruvian Luis Horna and many Spanish players among the most notable being Albert Costa (the 2002 Roland Garros champion), Felix Mantilla and David Ferrer.

This comes from jazz_girl.
"Siempre me hace una ilusión especial jugar en Buenos Aires y ante mi público y mis amigos, especialmente este año que tras ganar Roland Garros sé que la gente tendrá más ilusión por verme"
"Una vez más contamos con una lista impresionante de tenistas nacionales e internacionales. Contar con Gastón, nuestro campeón de Roland Garros, es para mí un orgullo, y además Carlos Moyá nos vuelve a visitar por tercer año consecutivo..."
Gastón: "I always have a special reason to play in Buenos Aires and in front of my public and friends, especially this year after winning Roland Garros I know the people will have more reason to see me"
Jaite: "Once more we count with an amazing list of national and international tennis players. To count with Gastón, our Roland Garros champion, it's pride to me, and besides Carlos Moyá is visiting us again for the third year in a row..."

This came from the great Melu who runs the yahoo group.
Thanks Melu for the translation.
About Gaston playing in Buenos Aires
"I had a few things to take care of, well not me, sometimes the presure of being a GS winner is too heavy and things have to be discussed. The problem is that that week, some events are meant to catch top ten players but I want to make it clear that I always wanted to play Buenos Aires or nothing at all. Last year, nobody invited me anywhere and now they expect me to go everywhere." Q: Would you have missed the event by any chance? G "I love to play at home where my friends, my new fans and my former fans will be (he laughed here -don't know why-). I can stay at home and be with my family and then go to the club and play my matches. They are the best conditions to play and that's priceless, even if you lose in first round. Now even in a grand slam this doesn't happens to me. Martin Jaite knows he can count on me always. He's working all year long for this and everything should go as he expects."

So now, everything's perfectly clear... and I hope that his Argentine fans will be pleased to see him play at home.

Still from the Yahoo group, Gaston has already announced he'll play in Estoril, Barcelona and Tokyo. Good news though I'd really would like to know if he's gonna play Stuttgart...I must admit this is kind of selfish from me...I'd love to know coz I'm simply planning to attend the tournament so... ;)knowing he would be there could but encourage me in my plans...

You are one lucky girl! No coverage of Doha here. I am on the fence with getting Voom so I can get the tennis channel. I don't know why my cable people won't get it! I'm not sure if Doha is covered anyway..... And you are going to be busy with these tournaments!
