IS there any particular reason that figure skating insists on making the men wear ridiculously flamboyant outfits? Imean, Evan probably had the manliness outfit on the podium, and he appears to be wearing a stretchy crushed velvet suit.

According to at least one photo on Getty, Brian is now of Canada. I approve.

Patrick Canada and Joubert have been sniping at one another in the press. It's bitchy and pretty lame. It more or less goes like this:
Joubert: I wish that more guys would try quads. You know, like me. I try quads. Have you noticed my rear end? Patrick Canada: I watched Joubert's program from the sidelines with my coach and I was like, seriously, that's his program? I mean, really? WHAT? Joubert: Quads! Patrick Canada: He received higher marks than me for presentation? That's pretty dissapointing. I mean, seriously guy, did you see that so-called program? REALLY? Joubert: Quads!
Somehow, this went on for a week.

Did Coria explode after Queen Amidala won?

Thankfully not. I'd make a joke about how they're too busy waiting for North Korea to shoot down a spy plane, but the truth is nobody here seems to care enough about North Korea to listen to them anymore. It's like NK is their annoying younger sibling that they feed on occassion but stopped listening to ages ago. Of course, this always ends with the younger sibling setting the house on fire, or something equally retarded, so that part ought to be fun.
A couple of my students did mention Yu Na winning, and one of them listed her as the one person in the world he'd want to have dinner with. I told him this was totally gross, since she's 12 or something. He looked repulsed and explained that she was like the country's younger sister and that he merely wanted to congratulate and tell her how proud they all are of her. This was sort of cute, if not totally boring.

It's funny reading American and Canadian articles, which discuss American vs "Asian" skaters. Nobody in their right mind over there thinks to throw Yu Na into the same category as the 17 Japanese girls.

Wow, Coria is boring! I thought "dinner" was a euphemism until I realized it...was not.

I didn't really want to say anything before, but Sasha Cohen is back and just skated at Nationals (her first competition in 2343 years). She's in the race for an Olympic position because US women's figure skating is women's tennis.

Also, after Cohen retires again and Joubert finally retires, I am burrying this thread and forever denying it's existence.

I DVRd it but not sure I'll watch after reading about it. I hate when everyone falls down.

Wow, I decided to watch my recording. During the last group's warm-up skate, the camera showed ONLY Cohen -- I mean, not one glimpse of the actual leaders -- and the commentators discussed ONLY Cohen and her chances.

No. But I just watched Flatt, who won, and ewww. Good jumps, not graceful, no magic. I guess we're back to the Tara Lipinski nightmare. The new scoring system loves a skater like Flatt.

Wow! So Nagasu was GOOD! True, she's no "Carmen" -- only Witt could pull that off. But she was great and should've come in first, and the commentators assumed she would. Her spins made Flatt look like a beginner. Stupid scoring system.

I think that's how it is everywhere, no? Eight jillion Asian Lipinskis. At least this increases the chances for FALLS and DEDUCTIONS, which are the only reasons I've ever watched figure skating.

Yet for whatever reason, the men no longer need to be jumping machines to be successful. At least, that's clearly what they keep telling the Canadian men. Not that it matters. Pluschenko merely needs to show up and fart at the judges a few times and he'll win in Vancouver.

For me, at least I have someone to root for. I'm not familiar with any current non-US skaters so I might end up liking some of them -- maybe not, though, if they're really just eight jillion Asian Lipinskis. But at least I can root for Nagasu from the start. Too bad Surya Bonaly isn't still around for some laughs. I can't picture any of this generation standing on the podium and tearing off their silver medal because they thought they deserved gold. Surya was hilarious and would probably have won multiple golds in the current scoring system, which wouldn't mind her jerky turns, etc.

I was so caught up in the new tennis season that I didn't even realize figure skating had started when they showed the guys. I miss Brian Boitano!

I don't care for any of the current women. Just MEH. Admittedly, I haven't watched a lot of them either, so perhaps I'm missing somebody awesome.
Janie, you should pay attention to the men. Lycsacek is actually good.

Boitano was gay, too -- maybe not openly, but come on -- but he didn't do feathers. But then, I liked Rudy Galindo a lot, at least as he got older, and he always favored the frou-frou look. But this guy on the left, yikes:
