It's supposed to be another soaker today...
So, some of the top ranked players will be through to the quarters. And possibly some of the lowers will be stuck in the 3rd round...

And Harkleroad takes the first set from Hantorexia.
Will Amelie find her 2006 comeback power, or did she use it all up? Not everyone has an infinite supply of that stuff. Of course, Lucie is probably doomed to choke, as well.

Wow, Lucie's rushing the net as much as Amelie. I had no idea she had that in her game. And Amelie is UE Queen for the Day.

at 4-1, Lucie is broken. Is it the beginning of her "women's tennis" slide, or can she hold on? She's got to break now.

2nd set AM- LS went from 0-2 to 1-4 ... then crept back to 3-4 --- but Lucie did not choke! she held for 5-3 ... I'm liking this kid ... smart Leena to choose her! IF she can hold on here ...

I really thought she'd choke. She totally wasted two MPs with awful returns and then didn't challenge an almost certainly wrong call to go GP down. But, she managed to close it out without having to serve for it.
I'm glad Mauresmo's boring passive play wasn't rewarded this time.

On the other hand, though, Jelena really needs to win tonight.

I read the scoreboard wrong while following Ame's match. I thought she had won the first set and Lucie was about to win the second. I was kinda surprised to come here and see you guys celebrating.

But, she managed to close it out without having to serve for it. I'm glad Mauresmo's boring passive play wasn't rewarded this time. I'm glad I wasn't watching that final game! It was exasperating enough just watching the MPs go by on the scoreboard. It always amazes me when a lower-ranked player does gut out a big upset in a Slam. I am now a Lucie fan strictly because she didn't choke this away in time-honored women's tennis fashion. But I'm sorry to hear about Amelie's passive play. I love Amelie, but when she plays like that I can't help rooting against her, unless she's playing someone I really can't stand.

Mauresmo ousted from Australian Open The Associated Press Published: January 20, 2007 MELBOURNE, Australia: Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo tumbled out of the Australian Open on Sunday, falling 6-4, 6-3 to unseeded Lucie Safarova. Safarova faced only two break points in the match and continually forced Mauresmo into problems on her own serve under mostly sunny skies and with the roof open at Rod Laver Arena. Before coming to Melbourne, Safarova had only ever won one match in six Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the second round of the U.S. Open last year. Now she's in the quarterfinals. "It's amazing, I still can't believe it," said the 19-year-old Czech player. "I'm so happy. It's incredible." It was her first time on center court at a major and her first match against Mauresmo. "I came out this morning and said, 'Wow this is a big court.' But I felt really comfortable here." She thanked her coach and physio and later, her boyfriend — No. 13-seed Tomas Berdych, who also made the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 over Dmitry Tursunov. Mauresmo had her Grand Slam breakthrough here last year, winning her first major title seven years after reaching her first final, also at the Australian Open. The 27-year-old Frenchwoman added the Wimbledon title and spent most of 2006 ranked No. 1. After a strong start, she started to struggle with her serve. At 4-4, Mauresmo double-faulted to set up break point and Safarova took a 5-4 lead after a lengthy rally. Safarova yelled "Yeah" and pumped her first as she walked back to her changeover chair. Serving for the first set, Safarova went up 15-0 with a hard forehand to the back corner that Mauresmo barely got her racket on, then 30-0 with an ace. At 30-15 she blasted a forehand crosscourt on the line that Mauresmo didn't even attempt to reach. She took the first set with another blistering forehand. Safarova, whose right thigh was heavily taped for the match, broke Mauresmo to open the second set, setting up break point with a cross-court return of serve at Mauresmo's feet. She got the break with another forehand to the corner that Mauresmo could again only watch. Mauresmo tried a few forays to the net in the second game, but each time Safarova passed her. Safarova went up 2-0 with an ace on game point. Safarova broke again to go up 4-1 but Mauresmo broke back in sixth game when Safarova could only get part of her racket on a strong Mauresmo backhand. Serving to stay in the match at 5-3, Mauresmo saved two match points. But she netted a backhand at the next match point. Mauresmo quickly piled her gear into her bag, threw a towel over her shoulder and walked off, waving to the crowd. She was unavailable for comment until after her doubles match.

In the tournament so far, Hewitt is 2ND in Aces. Of course, he played about 30 sets in his 3 matches, but still!

In this match, Harkleroad is the one rushing the net now and then, according to stats. Dani is the one with the huge reach; she should be getting her skinny butt up there.
I want Ash to win this; she's a toughie. The faux-glamour-teen days and the hype days are way, way behind her now.

Daniela is inching ahead of Ashley, in painfully slow fashion. Ah! Finally she reaches 5-3. It'll be tough for Ash to fight back from this brink.
