Just reading Rogi's comments in the Roma site. He says he admires the way the Spanish play a "smorzata" the way they play a long rally? and risk everything to play a "palla corta che ti spiazza"! He says he's afraid to do it cos he looks stupid?? and doesn't feel secure w this shot. They're asking Rogi if there's sth he can improve.
Rogi really happy he finished the match so quickly and easily esp vs. Tommy, a good clay player. Rogi also says he's surprised himself at his success in Roma -- not complaining about the wind or the new balls, more mature! He's stronger mentally too.
Articles in inglese:
Federer demolishes Robredo
Fourth seed Roger Federer produced a clinical display to dispatch claycourt specialist Tommy Robredo 6-1 6-1 and reach the Rome Masters quarter-finals on Thursday.
Federer - chasing his fourth title of the year - had beaten Spaniard Robredo in both previous meetings on the way to hardcourt titles in Sydney and Vienna, but expected a tougher match on Rome's slow clay.
Instead, he produced his best performance of the week, proving far less wasteful than he had in the second round when he squandered a series of breakpoints against Mariano Zabaleta.
The Swiss player could initially do no wrong, hitting deep groundstrokes from the baseline and crowding the net to break his opponent in the fourth and sixth games on the way to wrapping up the first set in only 14 minutes.
The pace fell in the second set, but Federer never gave Robredo a chance to find rhythm or consistency on his groundstrokes, breaking serve on three more occasions to maintain his impressive recent record.
Federer, who completed victory in 48 minutes, has now won eight successive matches on clay without dropping a set.

Federer powers through Rome Masters
Federer is one of the favourites to win in Rome Fourth seed Roger Federer stormed into the quarter-finals at the Rome Masters with a 6-1 6-1 thrashing of Tommy Robredo.
The match looked like a training session for Federer, who lost only two games to send the Spanish clay-court specialist home.
Robredo, ranked 19th in the world, was totally overpowered by the in-form Swiss star, who completed victory in 48 minutes.
Last Sunday, Federer beat Jarkko Nieminen to claim the BMW Open title in Munich.

heres the Eurosport commentary from yesterday...(backwards) 14:44 : He gets them back! Surprise surprise!! And immediately sets up game point, after a contentious call... but Zabaleta hits his way back to deuce... the game is see-sawing backwards and forwards 14:41 : TWO BREAK POINTS ZABALETA! Federer for once under pressure, but the Swiss man is the master of reeling back the points 14:38 : The temperature: 92°F 14:37 : Zabaleta is throwing the points away now. Two tame forehands smashed into the advertising hoardings and a poor dropshot aren't doing him any favours, but he holds after Federer makes even more complaceent errors. ZABALETA 1-2 14:35 : In the blink of the eye Federer extends his lead: 2-0... Zabaleta looks exhausted 14:33 : FEDERER claims his FIFTH BREAK POINT, and as usual, the energy of the first set has been ripped out of Zabaleta. The Swiss fourth seed now a set and 1-0 up 14:31 : Back to deuce... wasted chances by FEDERER! Two framed forehand on approach to the net and Zabaleta is back in his service game 14:29 : THREE BREAK POINTS for FEDERER! 14:28 : Trouble brewing. Mariano loses the first two points on his serve: 0-30 14:25 : FEDERER takes the set with another good serve and deserves the FIRST SET tie-break 7-4 14:25 : FEDERER loses his first SET POINT, but Zabaleta snaps his racket. He doesn't go to change it immediately, because he knows he will be fined by the ATP 14:23 : The Argentine makes it 3-4 with a sublime drop shot; but Federer is in no mood to lose his mini-break as he forces Zabaleta to hit a tame groundstroke: FEDERER 5-3; another good serve and FEDERER has THREE SET POINTS 14:21 : Zabaleta hits a good serve for 2-4 and the pair change ends. The crowd slow clap 14:20 : A bellow of rage as Federer nets a routine groundstroke: 2-1; Mariano hits a short groundie as Roger powers the ball away 3-1; Federer ruthless again 4-1 14:19 : Federer pounds down a serve for 1-0; Zabaleta forces a groundstroke long, on his approach to the net: FEDERER 2-0 14:17 : Federer has won 6 tie-breaks and lost 5 this year; Zabaleta has won 4 and lost 5 14:16 : Zabaleta forces the set to a tie-break: 6-6 14:14 : There's a slight wind on the centre court, but it hasn't affected the two players. Federer holds for 6-5 and his game has improved over the past two games. Zabaleta has the pressure on his shoulders now, as the set nears the tie-break 14:12 : The match time creeps over the hour mark, ten games have been played. All bar one going to deuce 14:10 : Very risky business! Mariano forces Federer to attempt to pass, the Swiss player comes close, but the Argentine clay court specialist volleys away for the point and 30-30. Two points later and it's 5-5. Federer attempted a lob, but in the end it became a drop shot. He falls to his knees in disgust 14:06 : Zabaleta starts well, at 39 in the world rankings he has only one singles title in Bogota five years ago. He has reached four other finals. He starts his service game well 14:04 : Hit and hope. Zabaleta appears devoid of inspiration as Federer uses his experience to reel in the points. Two crunching first serves has Mariano struggling and the Swiss man wraps up the game with a winning volley: 5-4 14:02 : BREAK POINTS for FEDERER! So far he has lost all his of his game chances... a double-fault from the Argentine! GAME Federer levelling for 4-4 14:00 : Federer hits two rather fortunate returns and Zabaleta is under pressure at 0-30! 13:55 : Federer holds for 3-4, with a better demonstration of his ability as he slides into the net for more chances to putaway the ball. The spectators are enjoying the pair's fight... 13:52 : Mariano holds after another struggle, but he mixed up his serve and kept Federer guessing. The Swiss star has it all to do and must improve the consistency on his forehand in particular. ZABALETA 4-2 13:50 : Each game is being eagerly contested. Each game is going the full distance with a series of opportunities for both players. Federer has had three chances again to break Zabaleta, but the Argentine star resists with his wide range of shots, making his opponent stretch 13:44 : Sensational!!!! Zabaleta plays the shot of the year. A brief drop shot exchange and subsequent lob from Federer has Mariano scrambling... he chased back and with an extreme western grip hits a backhand, requiring a lot of strength in the wrist and forearms to pass Roger at the net... so far a great match 13:40 : ZABALETA BREAKS for 3-2! Federer will have to raise his game after three unforced errors that has the small corwd groaning 13:38 : Another poor shot highlights Federer's mental weakness, as he hurls his racket onto the clay. Zabaleta is fighting hard as the game goes to deuce... again! 13:34 : Cutting off the angles of the court, Zabaleta comes to the net to finish off a confident service game for 2-2 13:30 : Now Zabaleta will be hoping to seal his service game a lot quicker. The former junior number one will hope for greater consistency 13:29 : Federer sweeps through his serve and at the changeover, Zabaleta has a lot to think about. They will be taking on a lot of fluid at this break, the heat is stifling. FEDERER 2-1 13:26 : The sparce crowd are being treated to an entertaining game. Both are playing yards behind the baseline and at last... ZABALETA wins the game to hold serve... it's 1-1 13:20 : A tremendous struggle for Mariano. Federer is making him fight for every point and a series of close calls brings the umpire down from his chair. The Swiss star given the opportunity of three break points, but Zabaleta hold firm for now. Still now sign of anybody winning the game 13:12 : Zabaleta looks over anxious as he fires a couple of unforced errors after a two point lead. Federer rallies back for 1-0 with a first serve ace 13:09 : Federer to serve... play 13:03 : Federer and Zabaleta have entered the court and they are warming up. maybe not as dramatic as the Juanqui/Gaudio match, but still good

from atptennis.com Fourth seed Roger Federer improved to 8-0 on the clay court season with a ruthless 6-1, 6-1 demolition of Spaniard Tommy Robredo. Federer is on a 10-match winning streak and is an ATP-best 34-6 on the season. The Swiss is within reach of a second Tennis Masters Series clay court title, having won in Hamburg last year. Federer next meets Italian wild card Filippo Volandri, who defeated Czech Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-4. Federer: "Who expected this, to beat Tommy Robredo 1 and 1 on clay? Yeah, I'm very, very pleased. The match went well from the start. I felt good on the returns, tried to keep the rallies short on my own service games. It worked perfectly so I didn't have to change anything. I had the perfect game plan and I'm very happy. Since Miami, I haven't lost a set in Davis Cup, Munich and here now. I'm surprising myself every time I win so easy. It's really strange to me." You're surprising us too Rogi! Keep doing it!

from atptennis.com (yesterday) Federer: "I'm not thinking about winning the tournament yet. It's too far away and the opponents are too tough, you know. So I really have to stay focused and go match for match, you know. Tomorrow is another tough round against Robredo. I've never played him on clay, but, I mean, it seems like he's playing really well. He beat good players on the way. "[Today] was a very good test. I had to work very hard in the first set. I was happy to have won in two sets again because a third set would have taken a lot of energy. "I'm definitely more mature. I explained this to a few people already that I feel much better out on the court now. I feel like I found myself, my inner self, really. Even though I had a dip in the summer, in the two Grand Slams and a couple of Masters Series, but things had happened in my private life which didn't help. But I feel like really since the beginning of last year, I really started to play well and I'm really happy about it. I'm playing consistent. It's true, everybody said I could play well but I'm inconsistent. Now I've proven I can play consistently. It's a big step for me." Its so interesting to hear from Rogi why he thinks he's playing better now. And here he sounds very spiritual...my inner self...so beautiful. (we need the angel here...how do we get that?)

No time for losing focus or getting frustrated or throwing racquets, ok? Now just go out there and play YOUR game! We want you in the SF! AVANTI, ROGI BELLO! [buona notte e basta!]
