GERRY WEBER OPEN HALLE June 10, 2003 Federer Advances but Kafelnikov Falls Top seed saves a set point in the first set. Top seed Roger Federer overcame an early challenge from Armenian Sargis Sargsian to advance to the second round of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle Tuesday. Sargsian led 5-3 in the first set and also had one set point, but Federer steadied to win 7-5, 6-1. The Swiss reached the semifinals here last year. Defending champion and fourth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov was ousted by former Top 10 player Karol Kucera in a match that lasted 3 hours and 3 minutes and had several shifts in momentum. It was an incredible display of backcourt tennis on grass in front of a boisterous crowd as organizers closed the centre court roof when a slight drizzle set in late in the afternoon. After dropping a quick first set, Kafelnikov battled back and was up a break in the second. But Kucera forced a tie-break and fought off several set points before succumbing 10-8. The players exchanged service breaks late in the match, including when Kucera served for the match at 5-4. Things looked better for the defending champion when he went up 4-1 in the tie-break, but Kucera never backed down and won six of the next seven points, closing out the win 7-5 on the first match point of the contest. Kucera snapped his six-match losing streak, claiming his first match win at ATP level since winning the Copenhagen final in March. Three matches on the outside courts were suspended in the late afternoon, with two doubles matches postponed until Wednesday and the singles contest between American Brian Vahaly and Frenchman Fabrice Santoro suspended in the third set with Vahaly serving at 1-2. Doubles Notes: Perry/Vahaly replace Escude/Clement (Escude left groin) Koubek/Sargsian replace Lopez/Mathieu (Mathieu illness) WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Bjorkman: "I hit the ball well. You always make some errors to start when you haven't played on grass in a while, but I felt like I was playing well. It was a good start." about preparing for grass "I just tried to hit as many balls as I could the past few days. You still have the clay court shots in your game, but it gets better the more you keep playing on the grass." about Abel playing in front of home crowd "He seemed pretty relaxed out there, he's a relaxed guy. He hasn't played that much on grass, so maybe he was a little uncomfortable on it." Federer: "It's difficult to switch from clay to grass. I've been here a while since Wednesday, but the Stadium Court is different from the other courts. The traction on the court is different. But Sargsian let me back into that match, I think. He should have won the first set, but he didn't. "My clay court season wasn't that long, but it's always great to come back on grass. It feels natural for me. I'm really happy to have reached the second round, because it's sometimes tricky to get used to it. But I felt good on the court. "There's a lot of work to be done [before Wimbledon]. I have to improve my serve and volley game, have to feel more comfortable on grass, concentrate more on the service, hit more aces and consistent returns. That means I need more practice on grass to prepare for Wimbledon." Kiefer: "It's not so easy to play against a baseliner like him. But I dominated the whole match. Before the match, I expected a harder fight. "There weren't many long rallies in the match. Of course confidence grows with every match you win, but I have to improve some shots in my game. Especially my baseline game must be better, although there were many bad bounces, too. But I served pretty well today, especially in the second." Prinosil: "I had a number of good chances to win the match. There were some close calls in the tie-break of the first set. And in the second nothing really worked for me. I couldn't get back into the match. All in all, I deserved to lose." about thinking of retirement in the past year "Yes, I did. When you are not really successful it is normal to think about it. But at the moment there is no need for these thoughts. I will play the grass court tournaments and take my time. Wait and see. My aim is to get back into the Top 100 and I'm really going for it." WEDNESDAY MATCHES Looking to jumpstart his disappointing season, 1999 Halle champion Nicolas Kiefer attempts to win through to his first quarterfinal of the year Wednesday when he meets emerging Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Kiefer won his third match of the season Tuesday with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win over Belgian Olivier Rochus. But the German, who also reached the final here last year, is a modest 3-6 on the season. Kiefer went 7-3 on the grass season last year, beating Pete Sampras and Roger Federer during his run to the Halle final. Lopez (11-16 on the year) is on track to top his best season (18-16 in 2002). German second seed Rainer Schuettler (31-15 on the season), who is at career-high No. 8 in the ATP Entry Rankings, plays Czech Radek Stepanek (19-16), who is at a career-high No. 40 in the ATP Entry Rankings. Third seed Jiri Novak (19-14), who plays Stefan Koubek (13-13), is attempting to win his first grass court tournament and his first singles title since Gstaad in 2001. Sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny (14-12) meets Jonas Bjorkman (11-10). Youzhny, who is yet to add to the ATP title he won in Stuttgart last year, went 6-3 on grass last year, and has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in both career appearances at the All England Club. source www.atptennis.com/en/newsandscores/news/news/halle2.asp

Maybe he has and we just dont know it yet. So lets hope! Theres always hope. Pls let there be hope... It's nice to see him go to the next rd. Anyway, w all this Slam talk, I was thinking a little about it. How Juanqui just won his first at 23 and AA didnt win his first til 22 and Rogi's only 21 so there is time! lol It w be wonderful if he c hurry up and win a Slam, but obviously theres still some things that have to happen before he does. What those things are, I think only he knows.

Thursday, 12 June, 2003, 13:33 GMT 14:33 UK Federer makes progress Federer is looking for confidence after a disastrous French Open Roger Federer continued his comeback after the disappointment of Paris with a 4-6 6-2 6-1 victory over Fernando Vicente at the Gerry Weber Open. The Swiss top seed had been in fine form this year, winning three titles, before heading to the French Open, where he lost in the first round. But with Wimbledon around the corner he is keen to get back on track, and has made the final of the grasscourt event in Halle for the third successive year. "I thought from the start I could win this tournament," said Federer. "With my ranking, my game, I can win a lot of events. Lately, I've been better at winning finals too. "I've come here several years and always wanted to win this tournament, because I've never won a title on grass - that's missing." Federer suffered another first-round defeat at last year's Wimbledon and plans to play from the net more this year. "What I want to do, to get ready for Wimbledon, is play more aggressively," he said. "You'll see me rushing the net more in the next few days." Elsewhere, Slovakia's Karol Kucera swept past France's Fabrice Santoro 6-3 6-3. source news.bbc.co.uk/OK, Rogi, we're counting on you to win this!!

Well he sounds confident which is good! And more aggressive stuff too and more net play! could be in for a treat at Wimbly! I caught a quick interview with him on Eurosport news yesterday saying that he wanted to win a grass tourney because he hadnt before and that he wanted to get well prepared for Wimbly because its his fave! ;D

Mmmm or maybe he himself feels that its about time he made a real splash in the GS's. Well I wonder what we will be talking about in a few weeks. How well or badly he has done. One thing is for sure, I'll be so nervous watching his first round match!

Just for the books
Allegro/Federer lost their doubles 4:6 6:7(7)
Mainly becouse Roger was strugeling with his serve when I counted right he got broken 5 time (also when serving for the second set. And even in TB he wasn't able to bring a 5:2 lead home...)
Oh well just hope he'll serve better tomorrow!!
Allleeezzz Roger!!!

Have to make sure I send him the right message -- maybe I can tell him that if he thinks he has pressure at Wimby, nobody has pressure like Henman has had every yr! And he made it to the SFs about 4 times! Rogi just has to mature I think... it may take some time... I gather he's the spoiled little younger brother... well, Juanqui's the baby boy of the family "el nino" as his sisters Ana and Laura called him!! but HE's not so spoiled. And it's Juanqui's mentalidad that gets him the wins!

After having difficulties starting up Roger Federer played promising and confident No. 1 seed Roger Federer the quarter final at the 11th GERRY WEBER OPEN in three sets. The surprisingly good playing Fernando Vicente (Spain) was beaten with 4:6, 6:2, 6:1. As in his first match against Sargis Sargsian the Swiss couldn't find his rythm at the beginning. His returns were floppy, his forehand inaccurate and simple volleys were out of bounds. Vicente, on the other hand, had a very good start and could repeat his fantastic performance of the first round. As soon as in the first game he could reach a break against the Swiss and increased the pressure on Federer with fast and short returns. Federer couldn't get used to this unorthodox technique and wasn't able to use his first break point in the eighth game. Vicente finished the first set quickly, by winning the tenth game with 40:0. the second set started as the first: Federer played an easy smash far out of bounds - the dilemma seemed to have a sequel, but finally the Swiss woke up. In the fourth game he played as we are used to and gained the leadwith a break. Although Vicente kept on confusing Ferderer, the number six in the Champion Race showed how well trained he is! The spectators were fascinated by lots of spectacular points 57 minutes Federer served to win the second set. In the third round the the spectators saw what they came for: Federer dominated the match and Vicente had not a whiff of a chance. Another 26 minutes and the favourite finished the match. " I had a very bad start and I couldn't cope with Vicentes technique at first. He plays totally different as other grass-players. Somehow it reminded me Santoro - the ball always returned once more as you expected..." explaind Federer who said ttha he was quite angry about his performance. Nevertheless, the 21-year-old is still confident tha he is still able to win this tournament. "After all I still need a title on grass." source www.gerryweber-open.de/469_713.php

"With my ranking, my game, I can win a lot of events. Lately, I've been better at winning finals too." Sounds just like my fake interview! ok Rogi, if you really want to win your first grass title then just do it! Younes is gonna be tough and he wants revenge! Kiefer will prob get to the final Is this the only tourney where he does well? Rogi! Yes it is, in fact Kiwi said he wishes it was Halle 365 days of the yr! I was mad that Kiwi d Rogi last yr only to lose to Yevy in the Final! Rogi, be agressive and keep that mentalidad strong, like Juanqui! Hopp ROGI! You can't cheer enough for ROGI!!

Tell him there c be Rogmania! well there is already. So Rogi's spoiled and Juanqui's not (so much). That makes sense. Juanqui seems so much more mature and disciplined and focused. And Rogi's just a mess. But a beautiful mess!

Lily, I w not go quite that far and say that Rogi is a mess altho I do wonder what goes on in that pretty little head of his [what a sexist thing to say -- and to a man!!]. I wonder if he can actually focus on one thing at a time? I know I can't, esp when there is too much going on around me... like now! I think Juanqui can focus on the task at hand and now that he has his prize, RG03, he can continue to his next goal... he and Martinez worked out a strategy for his final. Does Rogi do that w PL?? Hope so. Rogi is a bit scatterbrained in a minor way... you want him to be more agressive but still remain the sweet Rogi he is... not good to change your personality... just refine it a bit! Little by little... listen to what he says on BBC... he sounds so ... I don't know, timid?? Not too confident... Funny I just rewrote my message again!! Maybe I'll send more than one... or get my sis to write one too! Add your location to the message
