well, when I say Rogi's a mess, its like one minute he's talking about wanting to win a tourney and what he has to do to win it and then the next minute he loses 1st rd. I wonder what PL is telling him for Wimby... I know what you mean, Lily... Rogi is a bit confused these days... losing his confidence at RG03, poor thing. He s tackle one goal at a time... do you think he has a plan B when matches go wrong? Henin said that strengthening her physical aspect helped w her mental... that's good! I was thinking that Juanqui ALWAYS wanted to win RG one day since he was 12... did Rogi ever have such a goal/dream?? about Wimby?

ROGI! Friday, 13 June, 2003, 12:34 GMT 13:34 UK Federer foils El Aynaoui Federer looks to have regained his form Roger Federer battled into the Halle Open semi-finals with a hard-fought 7-5 7-6 victory over Younes El Aynaoui. The top-seeded Swiss, chasing his first grasscourt title, let slip a 3-0 lead in both sets. But he recovered to claim a win which sets up a final four meeting with sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny, who defeated third seed Jiri Novak 6-4 6-4. World number five Federer, looking on top of his game, broke El Aynaoui on his way to a 3-0 lead in the opening set. But the Moroccan, who admitted he had been 'killed' by Federer in their last match, held serve and broke back for 3-2. The pair then stayed on serve until the 12th game, when the Swiss broke again to take the set. The pattern was repeated in the second as Federer broke on his way to a 3-0 lead, only to be broken back - thanks partly to a superb shot from between his legs by El Aynaoui. This time the Moroccan held serve right through to force a tiebreak, but Federer upped his game to take it 7-3. French eighth seed Arnaud Clement had to battle his way past Karol Kucera, with the Slovak winning a second-set tiebreak. But Clement eventually prevailed, taking another tiebreak in the third to triumph 7-5, 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (8/6). He will now play home favourite Nicolas Kiefer, who beat Radek Stepanek from the Czech Republic, 7-5 6-3. source news.bbc.co.ukHOPP, ROGI, all the way to the final!!

HOPP, ROGI!! Just win your first grass title!! Bitte, Rogi! Get your revenge on Kiwi!! Be the first player to win on all 4 surfaces in the same yr since Sampras did it in '98!! GERRY WEBER OPEN HALLE June 14, 2003 Federer, Kiefer To Battle For Title The top seeded Federer stopped Mikhail Youzhny in the semifinals. Two singles semifinals and over five hours of action on court as German star Nicolas Kiefer and top-seeded Roger Federer advanced to a showdown in the final at the Gerry Weber Open Saturday in Halle, Germany. Kiefer needed over two hours and 45 minutes to defeat the fleet-footed Frenchman Arnaud Clement in a match that featured many backcourt rallies and long games with several deuces. Kiefer, who had not played in an ATP semifinal since his semifinal victory here one year ago, dropped the first set to Clement and faced several break points in the second set, before pulling away in the tiebreak to knot the match at one set apiece. Kiefer then jumped on the Frenchman, who had played more than three hours in his quarterfinal victory yesterday over Karol Kucera, by breaking Clement in his opening service game of the third set. Still, Clement didn't go down without a fight and it took Kiefer three match points and a few nervous exchanges before he put Clement away. Kiefer now returns to the final for the second consecutive year at the Gerry Weber Open where he'll meet Switzerland's Roger Federer, whom he defeated in the semifinal one year ago. Federer reached his first grass court final with a three-set win over Russia's Mikhail Youzhny. Federer had countless chances to break open the match and was just three of 21 in break point opportunities, but it was still enough to put away the No. 8 seed, who had his left hip treated by the ATP trainer at the start of the third set. Federer threw in 12 aces including three aces in a critical game at 5-5 in the second set. A victory by Kiefer in Sunday's final will vault him about 10 places in the ATP Entry Rankings when the new rankings come out on Monday, while Federer's performance will vault him two places to fourth in the ATP Champions Race 2003. In the doubles semifinal, Cyril Suk and Martin Damm defeated the young tandem of Todd Perry and Brian Vahaly. Perry and Vahaly were placed in the main draw after withdrawals from two players and -- after facing match point in the first round -- earned a walkover into the semifinals when Younes El Aynaoui withdrew due to a fever. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Kiefer: "I was trying everything but it is not easy to play him. I was serving well and he came back with good returns. In the end I played with a little more risk." "This was my toughest win for sure. I had to run a lot and I feel it in my legs. Yesterday's match was good, but this was even better. I was supported by a super crowd that helped me win that match. Tomorrow I have to do even better to win - what I wasn't able to do last year." "The tiebreak was a question of nerves. The first seven points were all breaks of serve and then I broke hiim in the first game of the third set which was really key." "Wins like this give you confidence. Then you risk more, which is necessary to win these kind of matches." about expectations for Wimbledon "I'm not thinking at all about Wimbledon, I'm only concentrating on the final tomorrow. It's my first final this year and that's is all I am focusing on." Clement: "This was a very tough match. I had two chances to break him, but then Nicolas played very well. In the first set I played really well, in the third I got a little bit tired. Yesterday my match against Kucera lasted 3:20, today, lasted 2:40, these were two long matches." "I feel very good after this week on the grass in Halle. Maybe today was my best match, but Kiefer played well also -- it's tough to beat him because he has a big first service, plays good volleys and very good returns." expectations for Wimbledon "You never know, I'm feeling good but it depends on alot of things, on the draw, the conditions. Last two years I've made it to the second week and the fourth round so maybe I can go one further to the quarters. But the most important thing is that I feel very good with my game and I have to improve a few shots." Federer: "I missed so many opportunities today, this is not acceptable for me. I'm happy that I won, but in regards to tomorrow's match I need to forget about it right away. It's the first time I reached a final on grass and that is something special for me." on playing Kiefer last year "That was a huge disappointment last year. I missed so many chances. In the third set I was up a break and lost in the end. Of course that motivates me." "I have a lot of confidence and though my head-to-head record is not that good against him it doesn't matter in the final. I am well prepared for everything." on what it will take to be No. 1 "Perform better in the Grand Slams, that's really the biggest thing it will take. Reaching No. 1, that's a huge goal of mine and it's something I'm shooting for. The people that are at No. 1 have earned it and it's something that motivates me." Suk: "We've had a couple of tough matches since our title in Doha so it's nice to pull this ont out. It's going to be tough tomorrow in the final, but we're in the final and that's all we can ask for." Kiefer Fast Facts: Tournament Highlights: The 25-year-old German is playing in Halle for the eighth consecutive year and has an impressive 18-6 record at the event including his run to the final here this year. In 1996, Kiefer won his debut match here with a first round win over Sebastien Leblanc. Three years later, he won the 1999 Gerry Weber Open without dropping a set. Last year, Kiefer notched wins over Sampras and Federer en route to a loss in the final to Yevgeny Kafelnikov. 2003 In Review: Kiefer started the season late as a result of a heel injury that had bothered him late in the 2002 season. He opened his 2003 campaign on hard courts in Delray Beach in March and then won his opening round match at the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells, before struggling in the clay court season. With his four consecutive wins here, Kiefer has evened his record on the year at 6-6. Miscellaneous: Lives in Sievershausen, a town just 80 km from Halle, site of the Gerry Weber Open. Has always been a good grass court player having reached the quarterfinal at Wimbledon in 1997 and the fourth round in 2001. Was a finalist at Wimbledon juniors in 1995. Federer Fast Facts: Tournament Highlights: Reached quarterfinalsin his Halle debut back in 2000, losing to Michael Chang. Reached the quarterfinal again in 2001, losing to Pat Rafter in three close sets after knocking out defending champion David Prinosil. Last year, reached semifinal with wins over Dreekman, Prinosil and Youzhny before losing to Kiefer in three sets. Is now 11-3 at Gerry Weber Open after his four wins here this week. 2003 In Review: Leads the ATP with 42 match wins on the year. Opened the season with a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open losing in five sets to David Nalbandian. Had impressive indoor campaign in February with tournament title in Marseille and semifinal appearance in Rotterdam. Followed that with another tournament title in Dubai, going a total of 15-1 in the month of February including two Davis Cup victories. Reached quarterfinals at 2003 NASDAQ-100 Open and then single-handedly defeated France in Davis Cup second round match with straight set wins over Nicolas Escude and Fabrice Santoro in Toulouse. Didn't play for three weeks until winning title in Munich at BMW Open. Reached final at Telecom Italia Masters in Rome, where he was surprised by a hot Felix Mantilla in three straight sets (best of five set match). Arrived as defending champion at Tennis Masters Hamburg but went out in the third round to hard-serving Mark Philippoussis. Seeded-fifth was upset in the first round in straight sets by Luis Horna at Roland Garros. Miscellaneous: Has never reached an ATP final on grass before and says that a grass court title is one of the few things he is missing among his ATP successes. Reached quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2001, defeating Pete Sampras in their epic fourth round match. Won Wimbledon junior title in 1998. At the end of 2002, Federer finished among the top 10 for the first time in his career, coming in at No. 6. Federer has one Tennis Masters Series title: 2001 Tennis Masters Hamburg. DOUBLES FINAL PREVIEW BJORKMAN/WOODBRIDGE BACK IN ATP FINAL ONCE AGAIN It's been nearly a full year since the dynamic doubles duo of Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge have played in an ATP final - an unlikely drought dating back to their tournament title in Bastad, Sweden last July. But the veteran team that has captured Grand Slam titles at the 2001 Australian Open and 2002 Wimbledon are back in strong form having moved through the draw here in Halle without dropping a set. Most impressive was a 6-1 second-set pasting of Czech doubles standouts Tomas Cibulec and Pavel Vizner in the semifinals on Friday. Bjorkman is seeking his 30th career doubles title, while Todd Woodbridge is going for an amazing 75th career doubles title on Sunday at the Gerry Weber Open. The 32-year-old Australian is looking to make tennis history as he closes in on John McEnroe's 77 career doubles titles. Bjorkman/Woodbridge play an all-Czech team for the second consecutive match. Cyril Suk and Martin Damm are looking for their second ATP crown on the year after winning the season-opening doubles title in Doha together. They also reached the semifinals indoors in Rotterdam and on clay at the Telecom Italia Masters in Rome this year. Suk has 26 career ATP doubles titles, Damm has 24 career titles. The two won the title on grass last year in s'-Hertogenbosch. source www.atptennis.com/

Kiefer to face Federer in Halle Open final Posted: Saturday June 14, 2003 10:32 AM Updated: Saturday June 14, 2003 5:00 PM HALLE, Germany (Reuters) -- World No. 5 Roger Federer came back from the brink of defeat to claw his way past Russian Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 and reach the final of the Halle Open. The top-seeded Federer had to dig deep to edge Youzhny and move into his first ATP grass-court final, where he will face German Nicolas Kiefer. But the Swiss was unhappy with his performance after he allowed Youzhny to get within three points of victory in the second set. "It's just unacceptable to miss so many opportunities," said Federer, who capitalized on only three of 21 break point chances. "That's why I am not too happy with the match." Youzhny, beaten by Federer in the quarterfinals here last year, began ominously by passing the Swiss at will, and an early break gave him the first set. Federer came out firing in the second set and charged to a 5-2 lead by finding acute angles. But he played his worst game of the match when serving for the set at 5-3 and was duly broken. Games stayed on serve to force a tiebreak, which Federer led 3-0. Youzhny hit back for 4-4 only to miss an opportunity to pass for a winner. Sensing his chance, Federer won the next two points to level the match before running away with the third set to claim victory. "The only motivation that kept me going was that I had to win this match," Federer said. "Every time on his serve I had chances, or was at deuce, and I just was thinking it was impossible not to win it." In Sunday's final, Federer will be looking to avenge last year's semifinal defeat to Kiefer. "I was a break up in the third and I remember how disappointed I was to lose," he said. "But I am really happy to be in my first grass-court final, and I believe if you can win on all four surfaces it is something very special." World No. 73 Kiefer showed encouraging signs of a return to his best as he battled to a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over eighth-seeded Frenchman Arnaud Clement. "This win is great for my confidence," he said. "Of course, I was a little bit nervous at the end because I haven't played many matches, but I played the important points really well. "In my first [few] matches I was a little bit defensive, but today I was much more aggressive and I'm very happy to win." The two-hour, 48-minute contest ended on a dubious call as Clement's forehand was called wide, but Kiefer had no doubts. "It was out, only two centimeters out, but out," said the German. Despite being engaged in a three-hour, 22-minute marathon against Karol Kucera in the previous round, Clement showed no signs of fatigue in the early stages. After saving five break points at 2-2, the Frenchman broke Kiefer in the ninth game and served out for the opening set. With neither player giving an inch, the second set headed for a tiebreak. Twice Clement led by a mini-break, but Kiefer hit back to snatch it 7-4 and level the match. That knocked the strength out of Clement's legs, and a break in the opening game of the decider was enough for Kiefer to grab the advantage. The German double-faulted on his first match point and mishit the ball long on his second before clinching victory when Clement's forehand went wide. "I am a little disappointed today but I think this was my best match of the tournament," Clement said. "I was a little tired today, but I am really, really happy with my game this week. The last two years, I got to the fourth round at Wimbledon and this year I hope to win at least one more match." source sportsillustrated.cnn.com/Saturday, June 14 Federer rallies to reach final Associated Press HALLE, Germany -- Top-seeded Roger Federer rallied from a set down to reach his first grass-court final, beating Russian Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the Gerry Weber Open on Saturday. Federer won his tour-leading 42nd match of the year and next faces German Nicolas Kiefer, who needed 2 hours, 48 minutes to defeat France's Arnaud Clement 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. "I believe if you can win on all four surfaces, that's something special. Especially if you're as young as I am,'' said the 21-year-old Federer. Kiefer had won just two matches this year before entering this Wimbledon warmup. Clement narrowly missed with a forehand on the third match point and Kiefer ran across the court shaking his fist as 10,000 fans cheered the local player, who was born 50 miles away from here. "A stone fell from my heart,'' Kiefer said. "It was an unbelievable atmosphere. The crowd definitely helped me win.'' Federer let a 4-1 lead slip away in the second set tiebreaker and was on the verge of blowing the match. But he hit winners on the next three points, the last a leaping backhand volley. "I'm very angry with all the chances I left out,'' Federer said. "This is one to forget. This was a battle with myself.'' Kiefer was the world's fourth-ranked player three years ago, but has slid to 73rd. He also won this tournament in 1999. This seems to be a place where Kiefer raises his play, no matter how badly he's struggling. "It beats me, I don't have any idea why it happens,'' he said. source espn.go.com/tennis

;D Yay, Rogi won Halle by beating Kiwi! Congratulations, Rogi, on your first grass title! I knew he could win one!! Just a matter of time. Altho he didn't play brilliantly this week, the fact that he won the tournament is a testament to his strengthening mental and tactical skills!! Now, just do it in the slams, ok, Rog? Forgot to mention that he is the first player since Sampras in 98 to win on all 4 surfaces in the SAME YEAR!! GERRY WEBER OPEN HALLE June 15, 2003 Federer Wins Fourth Title of 2003 Swiss wins his first grass court title with easy win over Kiefer. Roger Federer won his fourth ATP title of the season - all on different surfaces - with a 6-1, 6-3 win over German Nicolas Kiefer in the Gerry Weber Open final Sunday. Kiefer, who won the title in 1999, must settle for the runners-up trophy for the second consecutive year. Federer's eighth career title followed victories this year in Marseille (indoors), Dubai (hard) and Munich (clay). He is the first person to win such a diversity of tournaments since Pete Sampras in 1994. Only 11 other active players have won titles on hard court, clay court, grass and indoors in their career. Federer needed just 68 minutes to defeat the home favorite in the shortest final in terms of games in the 11-year history of the tournament. The 21-year-old Swiss dominated the unseeded Kiefer, keeping the German pinned to the baseline while coming to net to put points away. Top-seeded Federer defeated Sargis Sargsian, Fernando Vicente, Younes El Aynaoui and Mikhail Youzhny en route to the final With his victory and 45 ATP Champions Race points, Federer is expected to move from sixth to fourth in the ATP Champions Race 2003, ahead of Rainer Schuettler and Carlos Moya. He is now 8-7 in ATP finals and is 4-1 on the year in finals with his only loss in a final coming at the Telecom Italia Masters in Rome last month. Federer moves to 43-9 on the year and is the match-win leader on the ATP circuit. He is 12-3 overall in Halle. Kiefer was playing in his first ATP final since losing to Yevgeny Kafelnikov in last year's final here at the Gerry Weber Open. The unseeded German is now 18-7 in Halle and 8-2 the past two years at this event. He is now 6-7 lifetime in ATP finals Kiefer had defeated Federer at this event one year ago in the semifinals, but did not have his game going today to unseat the World No. 5 from Switzerland. To get to the final, Kiefer defeated Olivier Rochus, Feliciano Lopez, Radek Stepanek and Arnaud Clement Federer took home €113,000 for the win while Kiefer grabbed the runner-up prize of €66,400 WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Federer: "This was my best match here in Halle, probably one of my best matches on grass ever -- as the result shows. I played on a high and consistent level the whole time. 'Kiwi' didn't have one of his best days, but I put him under pressure the whole match." about winning titles on all four surfaces "I've long been waiting for a grass title. All four titles [on different surfaces] in one year is very special for me. I'm surprising myself with how all-around my game is." "For good or bad, I lost early in the French which gave me extra time to prepare here and that really helped. My preparation was perfect. This is not a small tournament at all; it's a big one. I played great in the final and hopefully I'll continue to perform this way at Wimbledon after I take off next week to train and get ready." about Wimbledon "I feel much more comfortable on the grass than the clay, that's for sure. I know that my chances on grass are better than in Paris and I'm going into Wimbledon really confident." Kiefer: "I'm really disappointed. I was expecting a lot more but Roger found an answer to every shot. He played unbelievable tennis. When I was a break down, I could only chase him. "I didn't return well; he served perfect. Nevertheless it was a good week for me. If anybody would have told me before that I would reach the final I would have said 'you're crazy'. That's the positive side, but in the moment the negative weighs more." "I picked up a lot of confidence, but I was upset that I couldn't give the crowd a little more to cheer about because they were really supportive all week." about Wimbledon "I played on a high level here; my game got more powerful and aggressive. I am feeling confident, but at Wimbledon you need a good draw and a lot of luck. But I know at the moment, that I can beat strong opponents." WOODBRIDGE CLOSING IN ON DOUBLES RECORD Todd Woodbridge moved to third place in the list of all-time doubles titles won when he and Jonas Bjorkman defeated Martin Damm and Cyril Suk 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles final. Woodbridge now has 75 career titles and trails only Tom Okker (78) and John McEnroe. It was Bjorkman and Woodbridge's first ATP title together since Bastad last July - a drought of nearly 12 months. McEnroe has joked with Woodbridge that if the 32-year-old Australian equals the American's total of 77, McEnroe will play the next doubles tournament with him, as they both shoot for Okker's total of 78 titles. Woodbridge: "Our clay court season was not good at all, so I'm really glad we can go out there and play like we did. To win before Wimbledon like that is great." about the record "It's something I've known about for a while. When we won Wimbledon last year, I really started thinking it was something I could achieve. But we've had a little drought since then, so I was trying not to think about it. Now we are playing well enough again that I can do it." about Okker and McEnroe "Those guys are all-time greats; to be in the same company as them is fantastic, McEnroe has joked with me that if I tie him in the record books he'll play the next doubles tournament with me." about his career "I've certainly thought about playing until I get the record, but I also want to continue until the Olympics next year [Athens 2004]. To be a four-time Olympian is something I'd like to accomplish." source www.atptennis.com

Congrats on Rogi's first grass court title! Emma wants to congratulate you all and she's really happy about the win, but can't get on the board today. She didn't forget you though . Hope he keeps this form up in Wimbly too!
