All right, ILR, here is the original set of questions we conspired to get Michel to answer. If you like one, send it in, or if you can think of one, cool I think that address is floating around here somewhere; maybe RF can post it again if we can't find it . . . 1. If you weren¡¦t playing tennis professionally, what would you be doing? (Going to university, etc.) 2. What is your favorite country? Why? 3. What is your favorite event to play? Do you like the atmosphere of prestige and excitement at the Grand Slams, or do you prefer playing in front of the home crowd? Do you like playing team events, like Davis Cup? Or do you have no preference? ƒº 4. What causes do you support? (Political, charity, etc) What are your political beliefs? 5. Would you say you¡¦re happier now, when you were 7, or when you were 14? 6. Do you enjoy giving interviews, or are they a necessary evil? (Yes, I realize the irony of this question.) 7. What are your goals for the 2003 season? 8. Who/What inspires you to play tennis? 9. What do you miss most about home when you¡¦re traveling? 10. Do you have a lot of friends on the tour, or are you mainly a competitor? 11. (From a Belgian fan): Do you know Xavier Malisse? I think we can strike this one for sure 12. Do you like being recognized on the street? 13. How do you prepare for a match? Do you have difficulty sleeping? Do you eat any special sort of food? Do you get up early to practice before a big match? 14. What do you do during rain delays? 15. How do you deal with the crowd, especially if they are cheering for you? I like the sleeping Q #13b! Remember this goes in the Juniors Corner page! How about "who is your ideal gf?" sounds like it w come fr an under-18!

I guess the "real" Micha fan, right?? Too bad we missed the Rogi Qs... So no solution to the Rogi poster, eh, ILR? Too bad... I guess I'll just HAVE to make the supreme sacrifice and hand it over to you on UK soil...

O.k. here goes my lunch break but I thought you guys might like this article about Michel in yesterdays "der Bund"
Asking for patience
The Berner tennisprofessional Michel Kratochvil has to withdraw from the tournament in Munich.
Michel Kratochvil can, after his Meniskusoperation, erliest at the end of next week start with the tennis training. The 24-year old has to be patient these days, and tries to see also some positive things from his injury break.
Adrian Ruch
A bad step with consequences. On March 26 Michel Kratochvil, the best Berner and second best swiss tennis player, cracked the meniscus in his right knee. An arthroskopy surgury was the short, and a longer tournament break the longlasting concequence of the injury he got while trainin in Biel. Kratochvils wish to be able to play again in Barcelona turned out to be unrealistic. The 24 year old is missing in Catalonien and has also to withdraw from the ATP-event in Munich. "Before the first real match I have to have at least a full week of full training." he says. No thoughts of it at the moment: Kratochvil hopes, to be able by the end of the week to chase the yellow ball on the court again.
No date fixed yet
At the moment mainly patience is required. The Ostermundiger admits that the present situation is hard for him. He was sick during the tournaments in Indian Wells and Key Biscayne and therefore wasn't able to show what he wanted, says Michel Kratochvil, even harder it is for him now to have a break becouse of his knee. "In the meantime I've accepted that the recovery needs time. I'm no longer fixed on a date for my comeback." As long as he hasn't got back his full mobility it's no point to force something and to risk an other injury.
Training in the wather
The recovery from Kratochvil is rather normal and not extremely slow - on the opposite: When a "normal person" needs about 6 weeks to charge the knee again, Kratochvil already uses other training forms at the moment. Right now the tennisprofessional goes to the pysiotraining twice a day and makes under the eyes of fitnesstrainer Marek Vseticek a lot of exersices in the wather. That allwes him to minimise the muscellos without charging the operated knee too much. He also works very hard on his upperbody. "Normaly I would have no time during the season to make such a pover building training." Kratochvil named a positive sideeffect to his injury break. Meniskussurgery with 16, then long lasting backproblems, and during the last two season he's been sick several times and now again a meniskussurgery: Does Michel Kratochvil sometimes ask himself whether his body is made for professional sport? "No" says the former U14 Europeanchampion. "The backproblems I have under control, and smaller injuries can't be avoided with this extrem charges, but I haven't been seriously injured during the last years." The only sorrows he has, is that he got sick quite a lot explains the Ostermundiger.
Still a lot of Highlights ahead of him
The tennisbusiness is brutal. The one who can't play is losing points and has to watch how he's falling down in the ranking without beeing able to do something against it. Even though he's only Nr. 80 at the moment he hasn't changed his season aim - to reach the top 30 by the end of the year. He tries to get also positive things from the injurybreak. "First I'll be extremely motivated to take part in the business again, second I'll have the advantage to still be fresh during the second half of the season." The tennisyear is long. It is bitter for Kratochvil to watch from the sofa how his opponents are fighting for points and trophies, but he'll get to his costs after his comeback to the ATP-Tour - for example at the end of May at the French Open. The preperation for the clay season will be unusual short but the start in Paris isn't in danger he says. After that there are with Wimbledon and New York two other grand slams and with Gstaad and Basel the two hometournaments on the shedule. And there's still Davis Cup: Thanks to Roger Federer coup against France, Switzerland is in the semis. The trip to Australia is long and will take a lot of energy, "but to be able to take part in a Davis Cup semifinal I would also fly twice around the wourld" mentions Michel Kratochvil. Pain in the knee on oneside, beeing a spectator on the other side - the tennisheart beats unchanged strong.
That's it. Please forgive me the errors - hope you'll be able to understand it anyways.
Looking forward to see you play again Michel!! Take all the time you need for your recovery!! No point to start to soon!!
Gooo Michel gooo!!!

Thanks for the article, Doris You are completely right, and Michel's completely right. I'm glad he's looking for the positives and taking his time. I especially liked this sentence: "Pain in the knee on oneside, beeing a spectator on the other side - the tennisheart beats unchanged strong." Keep up the good work, Michel!! Can't wait to see your name on the draw for RG!!

Yes, he will come back stronger.
Let me tell you about my #2 fav. hockey player. He was almost 30 years old and he had the same surgery on BOTH knees. During the offseason after his surgery, he worked really hard, pulling tires in the summer (he was playing in Dallas) to exercise his knees. The following season, his hard work paid off, his team won the Stanley Cup and he's voted the MVP (most valuable player) that year.

It is rumored that Micha will play the Zagreb challenger next week! Could he already be back? Though I'm not sure if he'd play a challenger or try to qualify for TMS Hamburg (he could certainly get into the quallie draw there). I guess we'll see . . .

Looks like Michel is having a rather difficult comeback.
He not only lost pretty bad to Elsner in first round in Zagreb but also first round in St. Pölten zu Lisznard.
Well he managed at least to win a few more games. So he can only improve till RG!!
Good luck to all the swiss playing in RG Roger, Michel, Marc and who knows .....

   Well Michels draw couldn't be any worse as he has to face JCF in first round!! (But hey I'm a optimist and believe anything is possible as long it's not over.....) Marc faces Guga in first round not an easy start either but he might win this battle!! Yes I know I'm a bit crazy for saying this but sometimes Marc is good for surprises Ivo hasn't played his last qualy match yet so we have to wait if he can make it.....

Michel hasn't got a chance against Ferrero, not after coming off an injury and losing to Jean-Rene Lisnard Poor Micha ... Kratochvil too Swiss star Michel Kratochvil who practiced with Roger Federer is another happy warrior returning from injury after suffering a knee operation during the recent Key Biscayne tournament. "I eased back into things last week at Sankt Pölten in Austria where I lost in the first round. It isn't hurting anymore but obviously I haven't had the ideal build up for Roland-Garros" said the Bern native impressing the local reporters with his command of the French language even though he hails from the German side of the Alps.

As promissed here is the translation of the questions beeing asked to Micha Michas world In the april issue we asked you to ask a question to Michel Kratochvil. Next you'll find the answers from the 24 year old Berner. How do you feel health wise at the moment? (Sabine Feuz, Glattbrugg I'm still on rehabilitation, but am already able to play tournaments without pain. Still miles away from my normal form, but I'm hopping that I'll reach it comes the French Open. What are your aims for the remaining season of 2003 (Yvonne Beck, Sursee) I want to reach the top 30. That's going to be very hard after my knee injury, as I have to defend a lot of points in the upcoming weeks. But I still believe that I can reach this aim by the end of the year. When did you realise for the first time that you have a chance in professional tennis? (Michael Dafflon, Matran) After I won the U14 European championship. Do you have a player whom you desperately want to beat once? (Letitia Allemand, Biel) I always wanted to beat Andre Agassi once. This wish became true last year in Indian wells. A win against Sampras is also on my wishing list. (Bet he can cancel this one as I don't think Sampras will come back just my two cents.) Do you have a lot of friends on the tour (Debbie Lowman, England) Yes, amongh the younger players there are a lot of friendships. My best friends are Federer, Corretja, Novak and Stepanek. Which is your prefered country? (Emma McDermott, England) Switzerland my home country. Abroad I like to be in Miami best. Do you have a girlfriend? (Gabriela Dorfmeister, Bayern) I'm single at the moment. But I can imagine to have an other relationship again. As I'm on tour a lot my partner must have a lot of patience and understanding for my job. Do you follow before, while, or after a match certain rituals? (Yannick Lüber, Goldau) Only at the warm up. I'm not at all superstitious (sp??) I only try to get the same hotelroom at places where I've played well before. Do you already know what you are going to do after your tennis carreer? (Martina Langenegger, Gais) I have no clue. I'm still young and at the start of my tennis carreer. About my future after the professional tennis I haven't made any thoughts yet. Maybe I'll work once at the family own tenniscenter. Could you imagine to move once from Ostermundigen out of the Kanton Bern? (Jeanine Augstburger, Uetendorf) In the meanwhile I live in Gümligen but still in the Kanton Bern. In the comming years I for sure will stay in my home Kanton. That's where I have my roots. sourse: www.smash.chNext up is Emmanuelle Gagliardi.
