So, basically, nobody I like is playing this thing. Join the club.

Back to RG, I bet Sharapova will play. Gimelstob said she's practicing. Her agent was making inquiries at Strasbourg-- but the tournament director said it's unlikely she'll play there, because the agent "wanted too much money". Oops, I think he was supposed to keep his gob shut about that. Maybe Maria and her agent Max Eisenbud should think about playing tennis and not about the money. It would be quite right if Strasbourg told her you're asking for too much money. We can't pay it go somewhere else. Sharapova makes around 30 million dollars a year and she and her agent are concerned about her appearance fee and decide where she will play coming off an injury layoff depends on who pays the largest appearance fee. If that's the case it's absurd. Maria being a mess in 2007 is part of the reason why women's tennis is a mess in 2007. This French Open has disaster written all over it. And Hingis being injured ruins it for me right off the bat. Maybe this really will be Mauresmo's eyar in Paris.

This French Open has disaster written all over it. Is it any better on the men's side, where we already know the winner?

221 Ana "you can't pronounce it" VRLJIC I can. ;D I asked a Croatian American (dual nationality) who attended the Estoril Open last year how to pronounce it, but can't remember how it was. Fuhr-litch?

I asked a Croatian American (dual nationality) who attended the Estoril Open last year how to pronounce it, but can't remember how it was. Fuhr-litch? I suppose the consonant cluster makes it difficult - you have to say "vrlj" together, there's no vowel or schwa in between. "Lj" sounds like Portuguese "lh".

I would assume it's ver-lic. The j is silent like in Ljubicic. And kinda said quickly like Edna says.
There's many worse names than that...

I don't think I've ever had a reason to say Vrljic out loud. I can spell it which is all that matters.
I didn't think the j in Ljubicic was silent though? I thought it was like a soft y. L-yoo-bichich. I guess for Vrljic I'd pretend I was a car revving up, then just stick "yich" on the end.

I didn't think the j in Ljubicic was silent though? It's not actually. Lj stands for one sound, which is something like a softened l, I don't think there's an English equivalent. Maybe when you say "lli" in "million" really quickly.

So, Jankovic has a top 4 seed now. Interesting.
Mauresmo drops to 5.
Silliams moves up to 8.

Jank at 4, Am at 5, and Serena at 8 all sound good to me.
Q-field now extends to Chia-jung Chuang, #226. Maes should get in, I hope; she deserves it after winning that 100K in Rome.
I wonder if Samantha Stevenson and Alex are in Paris lobbying for a wc, or are they already torturing the Wimbledon folks instead?

You can see the updated lists at Kaia's site, no need to guess. www.kaiakanepi.com/pdfs/rg07.pdfI guess there is a slightly more recent one than the one they currently have up, but they'll put it up soon.

I do look at Kaia's, but her list hasn't been updated since 18 May. The nerve!
So I'm getting my info from the thread on wtaworld, as Eggy stays more up-to-date.

Also intriguing are: Timea Bacsinszky (SUI)[8] contre Marta Domachowska (POL) Has beens Virginia Ruano Pascual (ESP)[1] contre Alina Jidkova (RUS) Maria Jose Argeri (ARG) contre Akgul Amanmuradova (UZB) Selima Sfar (TUN) contre Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (ESP) Sarah Borwell (GBR) contre Stephanie Dubois (CAN) (it occurs me she hasn't been the same since becoming the Pothead's girlfriend, unsurprisingly)

Ruano Pascual vs Jidkova?! This coulda been a low tier final 3 years ago. I expect Vivi to comfortably beat Alina though.
Peschke would have destroyed her draw in 2005, but I don't think she'll get past Kerber... Same for Suarez. Kudraysteva is a brainless basher with no serve, but Paola hardly plays now.
Arn has a very nice draw to see if she keep her Estoril form up.

What a draw of new breed vs. aged no-hopers. Beth Mattek may actually qualify. Errani-Olaru is a sexy 1r encounter. I think MEP should retire ... but only after beating The Fallen Emma Laine. I would like to see Iroda qualify, but ... I don't think she will. What's been going on with her? Lots of young former SSR girls I don't know well.

Iroda came back, did well enough to return to the top 150, then hurt her back in a match and stopped playing again, until now. Akgul the Giant and Delaware's Pride Madison Brengle already won today! Little Ayumi lost to the evil AK.

Delaware's Pride Madison Brengle already won today! I suppose she got the only opponent who was even more hopeless on clay than her (j/k - I just checked and Delaware has played a few junior clay events). But I decided to support her because she has red hair. Now that Matevzic has retired, the Tour could use some more red haired players.

Other noteworthy stuff so far:
Kerber moved into MD and replaced by an ALT due to Peng's WD according to the folks at WTAW (so Golovin, Vaidisova, Zheng, Myskina are all still in). ALT Pastikova then wins her match.
R2 will pit The Other Vika against Tio Slam and Voskoboeva vs Droolicious Ani.
Szavay struggled, but is through. So are Cibulkova and Perebiynis.
Arn wins in a blowout.
