Hallo Ladies! Mission accomplished in Bern! Did i have fun, or what?! No hugs, but i got a high five from Roger, got my pic taken with him (with his hand on my shoulder! gave him the red envelope, and had a long chat with Mirka one-on-one, and a couple of pics which i still have to crop, the others are done, so if somebody can explain me how to post them here, guess the only place i know would be at MTF. But later... I'm feeling a bit bubbly, had 3 glasses of champagne, i did make it to the apero, and i sat right in front of the court, about 10 feet from Roger!!!

What a lovely day in Bern! A crisp, windy day, the leaves blowing around, the sky is blue, the drive to Herrenschwanden, where Thalmatt Tennis Center is, is quite pleasant. The town's about 7 km from Bern proper, but since i live in Gümligen on the other side, i had to take the highway to get there, it's faster, anyway. I arrive there around 3 pm., after i've done my errands, bought a red envelope and some ladybug stickers, enclosed your messages, sealed it, wrote his name, and stuck the tiny ladybugs on the envelope... The Thalmatt Tennis center had some security people as i arrived there, conducting traffic and showing people where to park. There's a ground nearby next to the parking spaces, and most cars were guided there. I found a spot in the corner of the main street, but it's about 70 yards from the entrance, so i parked there. I reckon it's easier to get out, just in case. I had a small talk with the guards (like, look where i parked, it's much easier, eh?) and i was on my way. They're quite friendly, these people. Close to the entrance was a sign in German, "Guests" with an arrow pointing where, and another sign, "Visitors", with the arrow pointing to the resto. Since it was only 3 pm and i was starving, i headed to the restaurant. It's a cozy place, but there most of the tables were occupied. I rang up my husband's friend, who's been invited, and i left a message telling him that i was at the resto. This Filipino guy i know works at the kitchen, he makes wonderful Chinese dishes, so i ordered some noodles. There's another guy working there that i know through the Filipino guy and i asked him if it's possible to go inside the court, and he told me there's an entrance at the back where the visitors can pass to get to the other side of the court. There's a glass window between the resto and the courts, and at this time the other side has already a few kids sitting on the floor just next to the court where the exhibition was to take place, then i see more people coming into that side entrance. Still haven't heard from my husband's friend, so after devouring my Chinese meal i pace around and ask some people what's going on. One girl at the reception said that Roger was going to do autographs at 5 pm. At this point i see cameramen with their equipments coming in to the resto. The entrance for the guests is on the side of the parking area which leads straight to the courts, but there's another entrance by the restaurant, a small door with some dark curtains covering the way. by the courtside there's a burly guy who i think is the security. The owner of this tennis center is Romeo Oprandi, an enterpriser, and he has a 17 year old daughter who is the no. 1 player in Bern. She's ranked no. 8 or no. 12 in Switzerland. My husband knows him from the old days. So i saw his wife walking around and i went up to her, reintroduced myself, and asked if i could get into the court through the guests' entrance and told her that i was still waiting for Robert, my hubby's friend, who was officially invited. Well, she takes me along to the guests' entrance, the "guard" doesn't say anything, and she walked on towards another part of the center (where the apero was gonna take place) and i find myself a seat just on the side of the court. There's some local journalists sitting right next to me with their tiny microphones, cameras, the guy next to me has his notes, and i sit and wait. It's around 3:40. pm. There's another guy i know from my club, who's also there with his big camera, clicking away. I told him that he should give me some copies of some shots he makes of Roger. The place is getting filled up slowly. Kids are sitting on the floor in front of me, as well as on the other side. I see another photojournalist and i say hello to her, she wokrs for "Der Bund" and she goes close to the net, with 2 other guys, and they are also waiting. Then i saw Mirka come out of that other entrance with some people, then the local players, then i saw Roger... to be continued.

Mirka looks fabulous! I saw her in Gstaad last year but she was seated so i couldn't see her full figure. But today i had a good look at her. She's quite tall, around 5'8" or 5'9", and she wore a brown, knitted pullover with a white t shirt inside, with blue jeans. She wore a brown/biege cowboy style shoes with stiletto heels. She carried a small black bag. Roger was dressed up casually, and he looked so young, like any young person you'd see on the street---blue jeans, white & blue sneakers, black trainer's jacket. He looked his usual cool self...hard to believe that i saw him on tv 3 days before playing DC for his country on the other side of the world. And today he was in Bern! Surreal... I was still in my seat, next to this radio guy and i was making small talk but i was restless. The air was nippy, i wore black pants made of thin material and i could feel the cold air seeping through my lower back. So i stood up, saw my husband's friend and his business partner and went to them. From where they were standing you could see to the far corner, and there was Roger with the SCB and YB guys (ice hockey & football players from Bern) and they were chatting. I saw Mirka seated with a guy on a table but there's a cord in front of them, for privacy, and they were alone. The buzz was at Roger's corner, and closer to the court. So i boldly walked over and called Mirka's name. She saw me and smiled. I asked if i could have a picture taken, and apologized for invading her privacy, but she said it was okey. Then she said we can have our pic taken together (she suggested that!) and gave my camera to the guy, then she comes closer to me and i started babbling away. One pic of us, and i took a close up of her. Then i asked her if she was going to play again, and she explained about her foot injury, that it was still bothering her, that she was gonna have another operation, that she didn't want to risk anything by forcing herself to play again, that she could play for an hour or two and she could feel the pain again. I told her she was better off staying close to Roger and to take good care of him; by her facial expression she seemed to be delighted to hear this. She said that she's older and that she can share her experience with Roger and give him advice. I told her she looked great when Roger won Wimbledon, how she happily bounced from her seat and hugging Peter, and she said it was a very special moment, and she even told Roger that she won't cry (but look who cried). She's very very concerned about Roger's health and you can tell how she talks about him that she really loves him. I told her they make a good couple together and they look sweet together. :love1: I told her that i love tennis and that i was already playing before Roger was born and that now i play better since following his game. She said she plays better too because of him! Then i told her that i'm from the Philppines but have lived here for many years and that i'm also proud to live in the same country where Roger comes from. I told her that they should come to the Philippines for their holidays. She lightened up when i mentioned our beautiful beaches, she said one of her good friends, a Nicole from Geneva, who works for Swiss, told her about the beaches there. She said this Nicole always spends her vacation in the Philippines and that she was there travelling around for 4 months recently, and this is the person who books Roger's flights. (i'm just amazed how casually she talks about these things to me, a total stranger, but Mirka won me a million times over today with her candor, in her sweet, friendly way. I told her if they came, they could have some privacy cuz they can stay in some quiet beach resorts. Then she also mentioned their holiday in Thailand and that she was surprised that a lot of people recognized them there. I said, of course! Then she mentioned Paradorn, how great he was for Asian tennis, usw. Then i asked her about the perfume. She said they're launching it in Basel and that if i came she'll give me some samples, just to look her up at the counter. I jokingly said not to forget me, the Filipina woman from Bern, and she laughed and said no. She told me if i had some info and links about the Philppines that i could give it to her in Basel. I think i spoke to her for about 10 minutes uninterrupted, except for a quick call on her handy but she motioned me to stay, then as we talked about Roger crying in Wimby, he passed by, (already in his red and white uniform) looks at me quickly (i didn't even say hello : Then it was time for the exhibition, i bade her good wishes, and my last words were something like, "Take good care of Roger..." to be continued

oppps, i almost forgot: during my chat with Mirka i asked her if Roger reads his messages from his fans online and she says yes. I told her i had something for Roger from "you" guys, and she suggested that it's better to send it to Bottmingen (she said you only have to write Roger's name and Bottmingen and he'll get it) cuz he reads them when he gets home but he has no time when he's on tour... she also said that he's going to play in Hongkong. well, i did hand him the red envelope today, that was when he was at the apero and being interviewed, but i'll give you the nice details later...

LOVE... sigh! :love1: Hmm... maybe you can become Rogi's Philippines holiday booking agent! Cool that she'll get you samples of Rogi's perfume too! I wondered if they w launch it in Basel! Great!! Thanks for the neat report so far... She IS tall, isn't she? 5'8"! Tall and lithe and lovely... too bad she wasn't in Montreal -- I wanted to see her in person.

Mirka sounds absolutely lovely! I'm happy she was nice to you, since she didn't have to be. Sounds like Roger's found himself a real keeper in her I wish I was half as bold as you! In Cincy I was yards away from the boys I cheer on all year and I couldn't muster any words! Talking to Jarkko nearly gave me a heart attack :red: But, I'm glad you are there to be bold for us ;D Good to know about his messages, but I kinda like the giving it to him at tournaments. It's practically a tradition for you guys now Once again, tho: YOU ROCK

*sorry, i got interrupted, one of my friends rang up and said her son was also there today, but i didn't see him at all, he should have come to me, cuz he wanted a pic with Roger, too, and he had no camera. Poor kid. ---------
Anyway, the exhibition was loads of fun. I don't know the names of the other guys there from the footie & ice hockey teams except for Stephane Chapuisat (hopefully Doris can come up with the names after she reads the local papers). First there was a 12 year old boy who's like no. 4 junior in Bern, and he played one game with Roger. He was really good, returning Roger's shots (Roger didn't hit that hard) but the kid was nervous. But Roger made jokes and people laughed, the emcee was saying that Roger had to say if the ball was in or out. After that game, there was a 16 year old who was also hitting very well, but Roger still won the game. Then followed the doubles games, Roger was paired off with one of the players. Obviously the others couldn't really play but he Roger took everything in good stride, joking, smiling a lot. The players were also clowning around, one of the guys opposite him took out one of those big tennis balls which the kids use for signing autographs, then they used that and they were like playing football, Roger hit a few with his head. he really has a good feeling with the ball! The daughter of Oprandi was also in this doubles group, but Roger was like rubber, everything came back. She played with Chapuisat, and she kept hitting a crosscourt just over the net, real easy, Roger did the same, then out of the blue, he puts it to Chapusiat's side, the angle was amazing. Seeing Roger play like this, without any pressure, but just having fun, you really see the magic of his game. Sometimes he'd just walk casually on court, then hit a ball to the other side. The 500 people who were there were really entertained. btw. he also played a singles game with Romina. After the games, which lasted an hour, the sponsors gave the two young players a Wilson racket each, the other participants, some big balls with Roger's autograph, then Roger got some tickets for an SCB match as a present. They paused for some pictures, and they announced that Roger was gonna do autographs.
Close to the entrance, Wilson was displaying some rackets, shoes, and there were loads of posters of Roger (& Serena) winning Wimbledon. I snatched 2 of those, and joined my husband's friend Robert, at the entrance to the apero. But i looked back to where the posters were and some people were taking a new batch of posters. This was a different one, it's all in red, with his name in white, and there's a white cross above his name, and a black & white pic of him with a backhand shot. Cool. I rolled that together with the other 2 and we went inside. Robert introduced me to the woman from ATAG who was checking the names of the guests. She asked for my name and she wrote it down next to R's name. Robert told me that Roger came in a sporty Maserati...

so we walked this narrow passage to where the apero was (this is another hall with 2 courts, i played here before) and on the right is a badminton court with people playing.
the presentation is excellent, and so is the array of food on the table. cheese galore, black & green olives, crostinis with crushed olives, tomato and some al pesto paste, bread sticks with bacon wrapped around, skewers, spring rolls, fruits, tiny sandwiches, etc. they offered white wine, champagne and red wine.
i see some familiar faces, including the president of our tennis club who kept nibbling away, Robert's colleagues in the ice hockey circle, and some players who just showered came and ate as well. i kept glancing at the entrance, but no sign of Roger. they announced that he was gonna come as soon as he was finished with the autographs.
i went out and told Robert that i'd take the posters back to my car, the "guard" gives me a ticket to come back, and where Mirka sat before, was Roger still signing autographs. He's so professional about the whole thing, the guy that was with Mirka was handing out cards of Roger with his pic and autographed, to the people who had their posters signed. There were still about 50 people/kids on queue...
i took the posters to my car and i was on the lookout for a Maserati outside but didn't see one. I don't see Mirka around, not even at the restaurant. Maybe she took the car and went for a drive. Herrenschwanden is a nice area. It's rustical and it's very green.
I saw Chapuisat leaving and i said, Bonjour and he said Bonjour, then i said, bien jouie! and he said, merci. ;D
to be continued.

I went back inside again and joined Robert and his colleagues. the 20 yr. old daughter of one of them joins us. On another table sits the wife of one of my trainers, (he's a former Bernese champion) with her 2 kids, who also play tennis. I go out with the 20 year-old to the restaurant and we smoke a cigarette together, and there was Romina who had a shoulder injury two years ago from playing football! I asked her which sport she preferred and cheekily she says that now it's tennis. I hope this girl does well, cuz she's only 17 and she told me that now she plays for Italy as they treat her better than the Swiss Federation. But she is playing in smaller tournaments in Europe (having parents who are well off helps a lot, eh?) Eric von Harpen used to coach her, and once Kournikova came here as well and they trained together. Anyway, the 'Autogrammstunde' is over, and Roger goes to the apero hall, and we scurry back. He stood there with the sponsor who says many nice things about him. asked him some questions and he answers politely. i was standing by the entrance, but he was not too far. he's wearing black trainers and the sleeves have the rasta colors. the logo looked like Ferrari but i'm not too sure. The guy on the microphone said that Roger was going to take a shower and will be back. On his way out, an elderly man calls Roger and he politely walks over to him and they chat for a little while. i'm taking pictures from behind. some people are clicking away and Robert tells me i should go to him, but i didn't have the guts, and this was after two glasses of champagne, mind you! but then he stood beside some kids and had his picture taken with and when they were finished i called his name and he looks at me so i asked him if i could have a pic with him and he said yes, (smiling) and Robert took our pic and then i asked him if he knew his fans online and he said yes, so i took out the red envelope from my handbag and he said: "ah, another red envelope!" (smiling) and i said "ae liebe Gruss" (loving Greetings) from all of you and he said thanks. Then i raised my hand and said, give me five, and he gave me a high five, the palm of his hand had some ink from signing. But he was smiling and looked amused. Then he turned and walked through the narrow passage to the men's shower room. I think i must have been in a daze after that. Not to mention the champagne buzz... ;D I talked to my trainer's wife for a while, then i went to the toilet. A funny thing happened, for some reason i couldn't open the zip of pants, it was on the side, and it got stuck. I asked a woman who came in to help me and she obliged. Coming out i meet another woman i know, her husband was waiting for her, and we said we should play mixed doubles together sometime. At the court i see Mirka again, she's talking to a couple, then i told her i gave the red envelope to Roger, and she said she knew it. Roger comes out from the shower (he's dressed in his jeans, white shirt, black cotton pully, sneakers, and his hair was wet) and she told him to put his bag in the car. He steps outside. Had i not been able to give out that envelope inside, that moment would have been the perfect one, as he was alone by the parking space, from the passage back to the apero room i saw him (there was a curtain so he could not see me observing him) and he opened the trunk, placed the bag inside, and he combed his hair! But he was there all alone, nobody approached him save for a young man who shook his hand then left him. (that's what i dig about the Swiss, they're cool, and they don't make a big fuss with their celebrities.) Anyway, Roger and Mirka came back to the apero hall, they were standing there with some people, and Roger sat in front with the emcee guy. He asked him about his Davis Cup experience, if he was tired, etc. and Roger said he wasn't but it was difficult with the Aussie fans. He talks about his upcoming tournaments, then about taking a vacation on a beach somewhere! I notice Mirka standing there all alone, (she has taken off her brown pully by this time and wraps it around her shoulders) no one was talking to her, so i go to her again and told her to tell Roger to drive carefully back to Basel. She said, no prob, he's a very careful driver. Then i said something about knowing the perfect place for her and Roger on the beach. she reminds me again to bring the infos to Basel. I said i'll let my husband try the new perfume and she smiled. Then i repeated the 'have a safe journey home' in Swiss German and said Ciao, and she smiled and said Ciao. She is really so pretty and so sweet. I certainly hope she didn't think i was being too pushy. eh voila, after 3 glasses of champagne, i'm all lightheaded and i couldn't find Robert around, there were still speeches and questions, i had more than my fill, i left through the entrance of the caterers, i thanked Mrs. Oprandi, then i walked out into the fresh, autumn air. The Maserati was there, parked just in front of the guests' entrance, so i went for a closer look, took a pic. His plate numbers? Guess... ---- pics to follow...

hmm... a sporty Maserati? Rogi!! Sounds like Rogi's really good w kids! That's so great for them to play w Rogi!! Posters sound lovely too! I like the sound of the poster in red. Very nice, Mrs. B.!! The poster's really cool, but i don't like Roger's pic. Since it's black & white, his eyes look too dark and angry, like a racoon's.

Wow, Mrs. B! What an experience!! It sounds just fabulous, FABULOUS!! That's so cool that he acknowledges and enjoys the red envelopes. Whoever started that tradition -- thumbs up! Glad I was able to write a few lines myself this time. Thanks for sharing your experience with us! Like I said before, it's great to have someone "on the inside" ;D I'll prolly never have a chance like that again, as a Fed fan, and in those circumstances, it was really great. If this happened in the States or somewhere else, i wouldn't have a chance. I thank my lucky stars. Even when he was playing, he changed side after the second game, and since it was just for fun, he stayed on my side of the court, so i was really up close! Sometimes I laughed too loud at his jokes, and twice we had eye contact... But as you would say, i was there as a rep of this group...

RF1? FEDEX? ROGI? SWISSCHOC? WIMBY03? ILUVILR? Is the Maserati RED?? I didn't think Rogi was a fast-car guy, like Juanqui... they s race each other in the Alps or the mountains of Valencia!! Juanqui in his electric blue Ferrari .
The Maserati is black/brown and the plate numbers are BL 81088 . Cool, huh?
