I never understood why it isn't a country competition like Fed Cup was during the 90'. (Ie, 2 single matches following by a double match. Like Hopman cup basically). A normal draw is stupid (imagine Craybas playing the match of her life against Serena in the first round, for example), and boring.

I agree, I have no idea why they do it this way, where one individual can face off against another one from the same country. Where is the "team" thing in that?

We need ranking points to get players to care! There's only 14 other tournaments with more points, so this is some life and death career shit here.

Tennis isn't a team sport. Except in doubles. Even in country competitions, the points are ultimately determined one on one. We already have competitions to determine which countries are strongest - I think it's fair that if they're playing for Olympic medals, the top players shouldn't be hampered by the weaknesses of their compatriots.

I've really no idea who wins, anyway. Probably it'll be Sfar d. Safina 0-4, ret. Bronze goes to Batty.

Every individual sport has the chance of competitors from their own country facing each other.
I'd prefer a team format, though. If for nothing else than giving any uniqueness to this event.

Every individual sport has the chance of competitors from their own country facing each other. Good point. That was a really poor argument I made. I'd prefer a team format, though. If for nothing else than giving any uniqueness to this event. That's a lot better. I agree with the point that tennis has a team competition already, in Davis Cup, but the women don't have a good one since only Spain, France, and Russia give a shit about Fed Cup. Oh, and now Italy might care a little, but I doubt they go wild over it.

I think I read once the guy from the ITF said tennis has to be in the Olympics because some countries governments only fund Olympic sports. Thats the main reason.

Tennis should be in the Olympics. For amateurs.

Ivanovic also withdraws.
At this rate, the top seed at the USO will be, like, Pennetta.

Baby Anci Gurl was just on TV and she's on the verge of tears. Maybe I'm gullible, but I do believe her injury is legit. Shame.

And BAG goes all the way from being national sweetheart to public enemy #1 overnight. Not unexpected.

I tend to think BAG's injury is totally legit - she is the sort of foolish girl, like Dementieva, who really would care more about the Olympics than the USO - but that doesn't go any way to solving the WTA's ridiculous problems. It beggars belief that female tennis players are still seemingly incapable of any form of effective injury prevention. They have plenty of excuses for their ailments but the fact is that for five years the top WTA players have spent more time on their sick beds than on court; cf Federer and Nadal playing a much heavier schedule in the same time and suffering no major injuries.

It's legit. It appears the Serbian girls are just as brainwashed by patriotism as the Russian girls are.
It does seem like female players cannot withstand the punishment of the increased power in the game, along with over half the season being played on hardcourts.
It might be too late, though. You know the powers that be in the WTA are praying that Maria's shoulder isn't that bad.

It does seem like female players cannot withstand the punishment of the increased power in the game, along with over half the season being played on hardcourts. I don't understand why this should be the case, though. I'd love to hear from someone who knows about physiology here, because I can't see any reason why a female athlete's body, which has been worked on properly, should be this much more injury-prone than its male counterpart. Although, I agree with what you said elsewhere - there seems to be a lot of paranoia amongst the WTA 'elite' over minor aches and pains, in case they turn into major injuries. "Playing through the pain" doesn't really seem to be an option any more. Bob Larson in with the burn: Ivanovic reportedly called her decision to withdraw "the worst moment of my career." (Though she will surely have at least one and probably two more Olympic chances. Maybe, by the next one, she'll have had enough time to grow up and gain some perspective.)

I thought Li had come back too early just for the Olympics, but she beat Sweta in straight sets Nice win for Kaia over Pennetta. Poor Miracles had to retire while leading A-Bond 6-3, 1-0

Silliams v Ice Cream sounded like a great match. Patriotism-fuelled Dementieva surely has a chance.
For her first tournament in however many months, Li's winning some quality matches. I suspect she's been healed for a while, but stayed in China to train for this. It'd be awesome if she medals...depends whether Venus reverts to pre-Wimbledon form or not.

Silliams v Ice Cream sounded like a great match. I found a livestream for it, but then opted for handball instead. A bit surprising it was so close. Jankovic actually looked alive today... Not too much whining, head-shaking and looking at the sky in exasperation. She also made some ridiculous challenges, which is obviously a sign she's coming back to herself. Mayyyybe she has a chance against Safina but that's about as far as she can go now.

It'd be nice if the Williams were taken out before the medal rounds. Or at least that Na Li wins the gold. Yes, I'm a prick.
