The Williams have recently stated that they shall be in London, in 2012. I expect one or both of them to quit the tour for a while before that, then return horribly fat and lose 18 matches in a row before dominating Wimbledon. Probably Venus, except for the fat part. I don't see her as fat. Ever.

Congratulations to Elena Dementieva on winning the 2008 Summer Olympic gold medal. Elena deserves it and it was a great comeback win for her. And I hope this gives Elena the confidence that she needs to win a grand slam singles title in her career. And congrats to Dinara Safina and Vera Zvonareva on wining the sivler and bronze medals respectively. It seems that Safina is now where Dementieva used to be and that in getting to huge finals and losing them. I hope Dinara has it within her to come up big in big finals in the future.

Fabulous Elena! She's probably the one player who would rather win Olympic gold than a Slam. I'm so darned happy for her I could spit! Congrats to Bepa, too. Now, build on this!! Do not be a Sveta.

When Elena won she shrieked several times and then started bawling. It was happy, I suppose.

Fabulous Elena! She's probably the one player who would rather win Olympic gold than a Slam. Yup. That was my thought when she won. I thought back to that abysmal French Open final between her and Myskina and was grateful to not see that happen again

I got to see it! Yay for DVR!
I'm kind of thinking I don't want to go back to school. I have DVR and I would have much less debt.

When Elena won she shrieked several times and then started bawling. It was happy, I suppose. I was happy seeing Demented shrieking on her knees. We both shed some fluid. Oh, the match sucked. I can't get over that most of Safina's success is due to her mostly playing as a pusher.

‘From the beginning I’ve been thinking about the Olympic Games,’ she said.‘I decided to play singles only, no doubles. I was trying to save all my energy, all my time for getting ready to play my best in Beijing. And in the Olympic season, I couldn’t think about anything else except the Olympic Games. So I did all the preparation, I didn’t play any tournaments in the States that I like to play, because I was working hard in Florida just to get used to the humidity and just to be able to play in these extremely hot conditions. Today all the hard work has paid off and I just feel happy.’
‘I cannot even compare Grand Slam and Olympic Games because it [the Olympics] is just so much bigger. It’s a dream for every athlete just to be here, but to be an Olympic champion, this is the top of the career. This is, for sure, the biggest moment in my life.’
Now I'm even MORE glad she won. And beat Floridian Serena in the process.

Fabulous Elena! She's probably the one player who would rather win Olympic gold than a Slam. Which shows how stupid she is. Yup. Dementieva played like crap for the most and still won. Happy for Lena though. Losing yet another big final would be devastating for her.

And Dinara hit like 20 double faults, and went all Marat from the 2nd on.
This entire Olympics was another case of how women's tennis has fallen, but nobody bothered to see it, so YAY RUSSKI.

I wanted Safina to win but oh well. Demented thinks it's better than a Slam which shows that she will never ever win one, because she doesn't really care. She's a silly girl.
Safina is a bit too mediocre overall IMO. Yes, she's often a pusher, and then she's not really fast. She has great will and fighting spirit which is nice but she shouldn't be in a position to become no.1.

Neither should Jankovic or Ivanovic. But this is the world in which we live.

Demented does care. All Russians are freakishly patriotic, and they're winning many slams (ignoring faux-Russina Mariabot). For her level of play, she's had an outstanding record in slams.
Safina's main style is as of a pusher now. I disagree that she's not fast. She's like Ivanovic in not appearing fast, but she's able to get to many balls with her length.
I also disagree here.
If Dinara had any focus, she wins the gold medal. She had the perfect matchup with Demented, and flaked it away.
Safina's defensive style is going to spread out soon. It's similar to the Justine vs. Williams strategy of 02-03. Semi-hard shots but constantly down the middle. With the knowledge that the attack can still come at any time.
It's the perfect antidote to the current brainless bashers. Demented is an extreme as she only knows hitting hard and flat. Odds are if you keep making her hit, you'll draw an error. But, she was still terrified of coming to net to finish points. And Demented is a good volleyer. Racket technology has given someone like Safina the ability to consistently hit dipping passes from 10 feet behind the baseline.
If only Cibulkova would copy this.

It's still freakish watching Safina and Ivanovic win so many matches with their defense. They can't hit winners from impossible positions, à la Williamses, but they float the ball back so deep and so consistently. And they're confident in their ability to sit way behind the baseline and do that all day. And players like Li refuse to come to net to put away the floaters.
I think Dinara's fatigue was more of a factor in her failure to win gold.

I think that Ivanovic's intimidating FH return of serve wins her more matches than her defence. It was her ROS that won her the RG final. Plus not even the greatest defender in the world can chase her FH if she is given the time to set it up properly. Yes, she scrambles a lot nowadays, but look closely at how many of those points in which she does all that scrambling she actually ends up winning.
