Simon takes the first set.
This is the first time I've seen him play, bizarrely. I can see why people are confounded by his success! He's great, though.

Simon takes the set breaking Monfils, Monfils is playing his usual retrieving defensive crap, so, whenever he gives Simon a second serve, Simon wins the point.

Monfils still frustrates me. He plays with zero aggression, and habitually uses chips and floating slices and stuff for no reason. It's not the worst strategy because Simon is unable to hit a down the line backhand of short low balls. They play similar to some extend but Monfils is more extreme in the slowness department. I like how Simon is attacking the weak serves with his forehand.

Yes, with that username I imagined it was you. BTW, if I remember correctly, Steffi Graf used to think that Medina would be a super great player, multiple slams winner, the future of tennis. I remember reading that in an interview to Agassi, they asked him whom he thought would be the next great female player, and he said, my wife thinks it will be Medina. Was she even a top junior? Not that it would mean anything, considering how many top juniors turn out to be teh suck. We all make such errors I suppose. The first time I saw Monfils play back in late 05, hitting 2-3 aces in each service game and blasting FH winners from 3 meters behind the baseline, I remember thinking "He's going to be INVINCIBLE".

Phau IS among the fastest players on tour. So 1/2 for Mr. Graf.

So. Are the top eight seeds actually going to make the quarters on the men's side?

Also, the excessive Medina hate I do not understand. She isn't even that passive.

It's either her or Zheng taking Srebotnik's spot...unless Dokbitch really goes deep. Zheng would be more than acceptable! She would certainly be interesting in there. I guess Suarez Navarro could do it too.

Agassi said that Bjorn Phau was the fastest player ever and will be a star. Maybe they're a family of trolls. lol

I must say, I expected Simon to be less error-prone. Few things more frustrating than watching a player in the soft-hitting Simon/A-Rad/Chak mould make endless UEs and stupid decisions, as if they were some sort of ball-basher.

True, but in his defense, he's just playing bad. And, it's a typical match between friends where both play below average.

Perhaps I only caught her on good days, but I every time I saw her she was trying to be at least somewhat aggressive. I didn't think Carla Suarez Navarro was that ugly when I saw her last year, but now I can see what people are talking about.

According to our commentator on Eurosport, the first set of Monfils vs Simon was the most boring tennis of the AO so far. Was it really that bad?

CSN wins, and handily. I'm surprised.
QF at her first RG, QF at her first AO. I didn't think they'd give her Newcomer of the Year (she's ugly; I figured Cirstea) but that's going to be tough to ignore come voting time.

Reminds me of that stupid MJF/Leach match aeons agom when they were BFFs. CSN through! And now, she has more Slam QFs in her points than BAG.

Also, I'm wrong:
Dokic CANNOT be Top 20 after this event, even if she wins it all. :red:

Impressive beatdown from CSN. A quarterfinal against Cibulkova would be lovely, but it's not happening.

Well, she won a Tier IVA, and she's ranked Top 40, and there isn't any stand-out who qualifies. Kleybanova? Meh, and fat. Kvitova? Meh, and goofy-looking. Cirstea? Meh, but she looks like Ivanovic!!!

Not the same league at all. But...she won her matches. What can you do.
