It bothers me less when the men grunt because they don't hit the same, obnoxious pitch that some of the women do. It's the shrieking quality that I can't stand.

Connors and McEnroe did get loud sometimes, but the females are worse because of the high pitch. Seles wasn't consistent with her grunting, especially early in her career. I've watched some of her matches in US scrub events on YouTube and she wasn't bad. Then slams, UGGGHHHAAAAA. Maybe it's because of the echo in large stadiums, but whatever. If it affects other players in any way, then I feel they have a right to complain. I don't know if there's rules about it, but if I was facing De Screamo, I'd randomly scream when she's about to hit the ball if there isn't any. Screaming during tennis matches should not be forced to be a personal preference. If it's affecting the popularity of tennis, then force these girls to shut up. I've told the story before where my mother would force me to change the channel during Seles matches. People that don't know tennis probably look at these screaming wenches like they're insane. I understand why players grunt, but there's absolutely no need for them to do it so loud. There is a rule about it - a player can cite the hindrance rule against an opponent who's grunting. Then the umpire can make the grunter go through a three-step program of warning-point penalty-default. Tauziat, Navratilova and Capriati have used this against Seles. I'm surprised more players haven't done it against Sharapova - MLDB will surely get it the more she moves up in the rankings. Seles used to moonball and not grunt so loud back in the day, yes. Another thing to notice is that she grunted only during matches. I watched her practice in Dubai and not a sound in the half an hour hitting session.

MLDB apparently also does not grunt in practice. So...then it is just totally a dick move, both on her part as well as Seles's.
