No, they'll just drink more beer and that'll be enough for them. I saw Nadya and Amelie play such a spectacular match one time, indoors. Both were rushing the net constantly. If that Nadya would show up here, she could get some fans.

Nadia is a good player. She has a really strong all-court game, much like Safina's. And a match like this? Right up her alley. I predict she'll dismantle the kid.
But she'll never have fans, because she's butt. Kuznetsova has won two Slams, and nobody likes her, everybody hates her, she's going to go eat worms. Women's sports is sold to whites via hotties, and to other minorities via their peers. This is why the WNBA was a giant mistake.

People will be stuck with Petrova, but who cares. The WTA, the ITF, the USTA, and especially ESPN. We are lucky with tennis on TV now. It won't last forever. People cheer against Maria, but Maria is the bait right now. They push Oudin through, but if she loses next match, we have Petrova vs. Sweater or someone else no one knows, and that match plays to four people on the Grandstand and no one cares to even show a point. And then when it's time to re-up the TV contract...dun dun dun. I'm glad Oudin won, don't get me wrong. But this crowd was so quick to hustle Maria out, when they're probably going to wish they had her on Thursday, Friday, maybe even Saturday...

Yeah but, come on. We don't care about hot women and we STILL hate Fatrova. I mean, you gotta have some appeal whatever it is, but she's just ... ugh. No matter what happens, they will always have US. We are irrelevant. It's the very casual fans who will stop on a Sharapova match that I'm worried about. Oudin can be sold to America too, but I really don't think she'll beat Petrova, whereas we all know had Maria won today, she wins on Monday too. So they get two more matches from her, at least.

Post by Calico on Sept 5, 2009 16:32:51 GMT -5
Boy, is this crowd going to be pissed they cheered Maria out once they're stuck with fucking Petrova in the quarters. True. They were rooting against Maria Sharapova very hard. Or maybe they were rooting very hard for Melanie Oudin. Oudin won't likley have much left got the round of 16 and Petrova should servie much better than Dementieva and Sharapova did. It was a stunningly poor serving performance by Sharapova. This new serve of hers is a disaster. She wil not win another major as long as she uses this unbalanced service motion. The rest of her game is at grand slam championship level though. Two year ago Sharapova was embarrassed by Aga Radwanska in the third round of the U.S. Open. Masha was having right shoulder problems and was using a new service motion. That didn't work just like her new serve. Masha went back to her old service motion and won the 2008 Australian Open. She needs to do the same this time because I guarantee this new service motion of hers will never work on the grand slam championship evel. Melanie Oudin is like a bright ray of sunshine in a cloudy women's tennis world. She is a nice boost for tennis as a different kind of female teenage tennis player. I hope she goes far in her career. I really had mixed emtoions in this match because I am a huge longtime fan of Maria's but I like Melanie too and Maria isn't winning anything of significance with that serve. Thus I found myself happy for Oudin even though I wanted Maria to win. How about Oudin the Russian slayer?

I don't know why you suddently talk as if 2 or 3 matches are crucial for women's tennis future. There's going to be a Williamz in the semi-final. Friday is saved. Final will have a Williamz, final is saved. 2 shitty quarter-finals, NOBODY CARES. They even put a junior match on Ashe 8 years ago during the second week.

Post by DBBN on Sept 5, 2009 16:42:17 GMT -5
I'm very slowly, incrementally, and against my better judgment finding myself rooting for the Williams sisters more. First of all, at least they are not raging morons when the going gets tough, SAFINA.
But...right now they are basically all the distaff side of the sport has. I shudder to think who is going to win at least half the majors once they go away. The WTA has tried to push Ivanovic, Jankovic, Wozniacki, Azarenka as the "new stars," and, frankly, I think that's only making things worse: they feel the pressure of "saving the WTA" when they get in tight situations, and that makes them play worse.
Do you know what makes people famous? Anyone want to take a guess how Billie Jean King, Navratilova, Evert, Graf, Seles, Hingis, Henin, Davenport actually became stars?
THEY FUCKING WON.
Let these girls develop. Let the cream rise. When Azarenka wins a couple of majors, you know what will happen? People will want to see her. Not because she's hot, not because she grunts, not because of drama and commercials and charity events, but because she will have earned the top spot in a competitive sport and the concomitant fame.
At the very least, people know of Kuznetsova, even though they don't want to look at her. But people will come to she her matches because they recognize her name and they want to tell their friends they saw her and because kids want her to sign their giant balls (dirty). This even applies to Safina.
Success is the greatest aphrodisiac. That does not just apply to boning.

Yeah but, come on. We don't care about hot women and we STILL hate Fatrova. I mean, you gotta have some appeal whatever it is, but she's just ... ugh. Everyone cares about hot people, whether they're gay or straight. It's just human nature. And what Petrova also has going against her is that she can't possibly win a big match anytime, anywhere. She'll hardly get people to drool over her, but the least she can do is to get them to respect her and since most people rarely get to see her win, it's impossible. It's similar with Kuznetsova. She may win a couple of big titles, but half the time people can watch her play she's stinking up the place. I still say there's no top player who plays as horrible as often as she does.
