Maria winning with little more than her supreme confidence is why I'm sure De Screamo will be #1 for 5+ years. And De Screamo might be #1 for 5+ years but women's tennis will lose its last remaining fans and she'll be playing to empty stadiums. Except in Portugal, of course! Even if this is just pointless dramatic talk, De Screamo will NEVER be #1, never win slams or be in the top 10. I also don't get her rabit hate either. You swear she was the first ever player to adamantly cheer her opponents UEs or scream like a banshee in heat. Apart from the histrionics, De Screamo actually has one of the more likeable games of all of the young generation; her groundies are smooth and clean, she's not a pusher etc.

Nadia is a good player. She has a really strong all-court game, much like Safina's. And a match like this? Right up her alley. I predict she'll dismantle the kid. But she'll never have fans, because she's butt. Kuznetsova has won two Slams, and nobody likes her, everybody hates her, she's going to go eat worms. Women's sports is sold to whites via hotties, and to other minorities via their peers. This is why the WNBA was a giant mistake. I'm not 100% sure but didn't the USTA put an Ashley Harkleroad junior match on Arthur Ashe stadium court in 2001? That's going way overboard. I was there that day. It preceded the Guga-Kafel QF.

And I don't think Sharapova was ever a big crowd favourite really, as weird as it sounds. I mean, for as much as she's sold as the face of women's tennis and blah, you rarely see the crowds go crazeee over her, while it happened more than once that they openly cheered against her.

I mean, for as much as she's sold as the face of women's tennis and blah, you rarely see the crowds go crazeee over her, while it happened more than once that they openly cheered against her. Maybe you're right, but, as I said, I am more concerned with the casual fans, especially as they affect TV rights. Gross generalization forthcoming: the Sharapova fanbase typically does not attend tournaments. They watch her on TV and jack it to pictures. But that makes money, and it gets us hundreds of hours of coverage. It's kind of why I always root for the US in Davis Cup: the further they go, the more I get to see. Maria in person is almost impossible to root for. I don't blame this crowd or any other crowd who turns on her. But that's not really what gets that particular machine running.

I mean, in 95 they put Seles vs Novotna at 11 am, and then Schultz vs Martinez. Stadium was half-empty during Seles' match, despite the fact that it was her comeback year. The middle of the second week does not matter. What matters is having at least one name in the semi-finals and final, and some good matches during the 3 day week-end. I agree. Thank God for Venus and Serena, seriously. I did not, however, realize they were immortal. They plan to play 2012 Olympics I believe. A lot of things can happen in 3 or 4 years. Maybe the flu will kill us all anyway.

I'm not denying that physical appearance always matters and that attractive people are more popular. But for "us" it doesn't have to be T&A. What we need is either beauty, or charisma, or something special that others don't have. Fatrova has none of these. Sveta is a bit special but plays bad way too often.

Except that I think she might reach the top 10 at some point. It all depends on how much competitiveness at the top of the game deteriorates over the next few years. I still think that her ground game will always be too low % for her to have consistently good results over a 12 month period, considering that her serve will likely never be any sort of weapon to get her consistent cheap points. I feel the best she could hope for is a Zheng-esque career. Maybe in a couple of years though that kind of career will be a top-10 career.

We survived a decade of the Williams sisters and are still here -- if that didn't turn us to handball, what could?

At this point though, the WTA is desperate for young players with good games. They can worry about the rest later. I'm sure the WTA can't believe how unlucky they were with Borzniacki.

Though I might if she were to play Kim Nicesters.

Meanwhile, the time of the day I've been waiting for is upon us: the three women's matches no one cares about except us teeing off nearly simultaneously, while TV supplies me with two men's matches featuring three of my favorites and four inarguable hotties. Life is good.

Meh. My interest in women's tennis has gone down considerably in recent times. There might be various reasons for that. But right now the men are so far ahead for me that I don't really care who wins on the women's side. It seems so ... unimportant, even for most of the players.

Hey what happened to the Roddick/Isner match on CBS television? I was wondering if the news at 6pm EST would take over from tennis and it did thanks to the lengthy 2:58 minute match between Oudin/Sharapova. I just turned on ESPN2 and they are showing football. Where is the tennis on ESPN News? LOL! ;D

Meh. My interest in women's tennis has gone down considerably in recent times. I don't believe you. Obviously I can't sit in front of the TV drooling every day (those were good times), but I still follow the sport fairly religiously. I think you do too...but maybe not. See, if this is the case, the WTA is in VERY big trouble.

I don't believe GoDom either. Anyway, what WTA needs is players who play consistently well. If they're hot, great, but as long as they're not vomit-inducingly ugly and can play, it's OK. Women's tennis is never going to be a huge deal and its leaders were never sex bombs (except for Evert in her day, maybe) and it did fine.

God, Clijsters is hideous and completely anonymous outside of tennis circles and was never very good to begin with, and she's allegedly the big savior. If she's going to draw crowds, anyone halfway decent on a regular basis will do. We just don't have anyone like that at the moment.
