No! Yes if the product is tennis. No if it's WTA tennis. I still don't believe you The next van Roost will come along and you'll wave her flag alone! I still have my weird faves but since they always suck in the end, I have given up on investing much in them. The van Roost times were different because I did not only care about van Roost. I watched every single WTA match that was on TV, I printed out draws etc. This ended many years ago already with the Williams era. Actually the past 5 years my interest has been low but now it's even worse. I don't need "good" tennis to get interested. I also watch matches in my club. But the people playing need to care. Not the case on the WTA tour.

It's not it at all. They could all be fat and ugly and terrible. YOU and ME and HIM? We'll still watch! We are 100% irrelevant because we are sold on the product no matter what. Even die-hards eventually draw the line somewhere. This from someone still holding out hope for Nicole Vaidisova.

It was a stunningly poor serving performance by Sharapova. This new serve of hers is a disaster. She wil not win another major as long as she uses this unbalanced service motion. The rest of her game is at grand slam championship level though. How can you say that when she was consistently outplayed by Oudin in the baseline rallies? And she had 63 UEs? And for those commentators (you know who you are, JOHN) who claim that Maria's game is no longer one-dimensional -- yeah, she did hit that ONE drop shot. And went to the net a whole 14 times in a 3-hour match. Yep, she's certainly a Variety Queen!

Printing out draws...those were the days. I blew so much money on ink.
Anyway, I do think the players care...they are just chokers. And, again, I do think a lot of it has to do with the WTA's new "SAVE US" pimptastic mentality. They just have to wait and let someone consistently win. It could have been Safina had they not made her feel so self-conscious about "winning to validate the ranking."
Anyway. Well, Roddick and Verdasco sucking. Lame.

A ticker on TTC is saying Oudin today produced the "upset of the tournament" with the "match of her life," and, I'm sorry, I thought she beat the World #4 in the previous round, who had just pwned Sharapova in the previous tournament? And I also thought she beat a Top Ten player at Wimbledon, and Sharapova is not even Top 25?
Too much thinking. I should know better.

I not only printed out every Slam draws, I FILLED OUT THE LINES by hand with the winners' names, probably right up through the quarters. Bizarrely, no matter what our ages at the time, we were all tennis super-nerds at the same time, and all slowly became less passionate at the same time, too. So it's not about age. It's Zeitgeist!

The reason for me is the lack of ELITE players. The Williamses are responsible for this as they never pushed the field consistently. Instead of forcing them the catch up in 2003/04, they just went away and let bad players win Slams. And of course, Leach. Who was an elite player and yet didn't win Slams.
Too many random winners. We've had so few on the men's side. Johansson is the only one I can think of, and it was awful.
Now, after the Williamses conditioned the field to play bad and still win a lot, Serena wins all the Slams without being close to her 03/04 level. It's just pathetic.

Interesting discussion.
I'm with the "uber tennis nerd back in the day but is far more interested in men's tennis right now" crowd. Hotness doesn't matter, as far as fans like us are concerned. But, it helps the game when there's no champions around besides the Sistahz who won't be around much longer. When champions were around, you didn't need remotely attractive women at the top of the game as history has taught us (see: Graf-Seles-ASV period).

I'm not 100% sure but didn't the USTA put an Ashley Harkleroad junior match on Arthur Ashe stadium court in 2001? That's going way overboard. I was there that day. It preceded the Guga-Kafel QF. That was 8 years ago! My how time flies. Anyone else see tennis similarities between Melanie Oudin and Ashley Harkleroad? They are about the same size but Melanie seems to have more speed, power and game. Harkleroad never really panned out but I think Oudin has a chance to. Credit to Maria for being so sporting and nice to Oudin at the net after the match. She even said something to her. Maria did this amidst arguably the most devastating loss of her career with the noisey and rude New York crowd rooting so hard against her. She had to be very hurt by the loss and the crowd but she didn't show it. Masha has come along way.

K-Bond came back! Excellent! So who does the winner of this one play, Wickmayer? No, Dulko. Wickmayer plays Safina or Kvitova. Yanina is doing well for herself lately; she must have calmed down a bit after she was defaulted earlier in the year. She has a big, solid game.

I would move Safina out and just give night session Blake. Lengthy delay between sets of K-Bond/A-Rod. Kuznetsova wins a tough tough first set over Peer.
